hahaha thanks guys.

frodolf where are you from? I'm doing gr 4 history, harmony and counterpoint right now and it's being a pain in the bum o_o. Ontario needs gr 2 theory with gr 8 practical and we have those one at a time.

Do you get more freedom taking science or arts&science? I need to keep my options open as much as I can

Arts&Science I'd be doing Biomedical Science & Int'l Development Studies (after first year)
Science.. I dunno, something like biochemistry.

And I'm reallly tempted to go into Environmental Sciences for some reason right now. Ahhh.

I'm fine with taking all those prereqs, because I wan to know how they are like at the university level. But I don't want to take any humanities frown

Linguistics.. I'd take an asian language like mandarin or japanese Lol; or take world religions again?

My signature changes with my mood. It's just that engineering is so different from anything that I have learned so far, so I really don't know whether I will like engineering or not. All I know is that it's easier to switch out of engineering than in to it. This picking my life path is actually driving me mad. I am afraid that if I go into a pure research field, I wont be smart enough and then I'll be screwed if I want a job. Man, this is such a case of go with your head or go with your heart.

My chem teacher took the explore program way way back in Sudbury, and said she became totally fluent afterwards. smile You will pick up basic french for sure, and have an amazing time in Montreal razz.

Tmhlee, I though that you said you wanted to take Microeconomic Applications and Analysis, isn't that a humanities, along with PoliSci and Law and stuff like that?

Also, as for your question, I am not actually with the RCM (should have mentioned that). I am doing my piano with Conservatory Canada, which is based out of London, I believe, as opposed to RCM which is based out of Toronto. That's why my Theory requirements are different.

Are you nervous about making friends? my friend who did explore last year said people tend to go with at least one friend, so I hope they're not all exclusive.

frodolf - which option is the "heart" one and which is the "head" one?

Hmm, I haven't really thought about it. I'm pretty social but who knows. I may be the loner in the corner during all the meals... unable to speak a word of french.

Shoot. I don't know anyone going .. and it's all the way in BC.. I guess I should be a little more nervous and worried?

I do have a friend out there though who is in gr 11 and he's involved in this cancer research program at the hospital right beside UVic this summer - so worst comes to worst I will have one person to hang out with =D

and frodolf: that's cool. I'm not familiar with all the other conservatories. Hopefully there is one in Montreal similar to RCM..

So I'm wrong about the social science thing. That sucks, but don't you only have to take 2 categories? You might be better off with Science, because you can still do an arts major, I believe, as long as you do a science major.

Heart = Math/CS/Economics (I am a nerd, I suppose) Mind = Engineering

I hope I have a good time. Since the U of M is 18+, a lot of the people going will be university students. I've gotten along with university students in the past, so hopefully that'll happen again. i really hope I become fluent. I mean, they say it's easier to pick up a language if you already know more than one, right? I want to be fluent in at least 5 languages.

My friend also wants to go into hard maths, but she's going into science at this point to see if she can make it to med school.

What are your plans after graduation, guys? I know frodolt you're planning on going to MIT from another thread?

I'm thinking of taking 2 years off, one to work full time, and another to travel, and then going to law school (my dream is Columbia).

Frodolf: Lol I read your answer a tad bit late and editted my last post.

I'd really prefer to take social sciences for all my arts courses so I can get as much depth I can get with such a broad range of courses. Do you think it'd be easier to switch into the Arts faculty from Arts&Science or Science?

And doesn't Math/CS/Economics have a huge amount of potential esp for a female in the field? Carnegie Mellon and Randy Pausch comes to mind.

For me it's like

Heart: fine arts like illustration; Mind: arts&science

The former isn't financially feasible at all.

heythereb, you're going to have an amazzzing time. UVic is 18+ too but the drinking age will still be 19. Blegh.

I'm trying to keep my options open and take MCATs and LSATs. Lol. See how my GPA does. Hopefully I can make it to grad school .. a Masters in Public Health?

I can't believe how lost I am in terms of future planning.

This is what I want for my future:

1. To be Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting
2. To be John Nash (The guy from A Beautiful Mind)
3. To be Jeffery Sachs (Director of the Earth Institute at the University of Chicago)
4. To work at Google
5. To be Sectretary General of the UN
6. To be Prime Minister of Canada

Naturally, I am going to have my work cut out for me. None of these is really feasable. Really, I just want to get a PhD in mathematics from a decent school and hopefully get tenured as a professor or work at a high tech company, maybe over-seas. I would also like to get into some philantropy.

Basically, MIT is my dream school, but I know that it will never happen, so I just wont think about it.

The really cool thing about McGill is if you look through the McGill 2012 Facebook group, there are alist of famous McGill grads, and there are a number of prime ministers and presidents (of other countries). How cool is that? Plus a McGill grads co-wrote The UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Anyway, on topic - I think the biggest thing that kind of makes people feel like they won't have enough time to do everything they want is this notion that you have to kind of settle down by the time you're 30. I know I feel that way sometimes. I really want to have an international lifestyle, though. Maybe become a diplomat? I don't know. Right now I'm really focusing on just getting my undergrad finished. But law school is kind of at the back of my mind, and that's going to cost a lot. Plus I really want to take a year off and just travel all the continents, and just expand my horizons a little. My parents are really pushing me to make a lot of money. And in law, that's corporate law, but I really don't know how I feel about that since they really aren't the nicest guys in terms of contributing to the betterment of the world. The other option is public service, but in a lot of cases (although it's not written in stone) that pays little money. And a part of me wants to have money, so that when I have kids, waaay down the road, I can get them the best education I can and take them everywhere and make them global citizens of sorts. Whoaaa, I just went on and on there.

Have you guys talked to your friends about making a decision? What do they say?

I know what you mean about feeling pressure from my parents. They aren't pushing me into anything, but I feel a little bit pressure because everyone in my family is a doctor/ has a doctorate degree, so I feel like if I can't get into grad school or med school I wont live up to my parents expectations, as they always talk about how much smarter I am than them. And the money thing, part of me wants to just go and get the degree that will lead me to the most money and roll around in the dough after I'm done, but the other part doesn't want me to sell my soul to the devil. One of the things that interests me about engineering is the fact that I would have the oppurtunity to work with Engineers without Borders, and do a lot of charity work that way. I am very interested in world issues and want to "save the world," no matter how cliche that is. I think that public law would be so interesting, but it would be hard to defend cases that you don't actually agree with. Diplomat is definitely something that I would love to do. I am completely torn between the arts and science parts of me.

My friends say, "U of T, Oh.." and "WHY ARE YOU EVEN CONSIDERING NOT GOING TO MCGILL?"

But I guess nowhere does it say that you can't make money doing something you like. Yeah, I really want do something that helps people, but there are so many problems and many of them are so complex that it's hard to know where to start. I think I really to focus my time at McGill on economics, political science and history, and then maybe International Development. There was that one internship for ID students in Ghana somewhere helping with a women's right organization.

What about summers? Are you guys thinking of what you'll do? I think summers are going to be crucial in developing "relevant" skills and experience in your field. I'm still trying to compile a list of all possible things to do so i at least have some idea of where I'm going. I know there's some kind of "summit" type thing for History majors in New York Cite that seems pretty cool.

Okay so I've missed alot!
I let out some of that Pre-Mid-Term stress this weekend going out Fri, Sat & Sun!

I'm fortunate that I do know quite a few people going to McGill. But I kinda what to make *New friends, oh well they'll be plenty of opportunities. McGill attracts many international students, which is awesome I think, great to have contacts when you travel the World. I for one will be joining the Spanish and Latin American Students' Association (SALSA)

You guys are WAYY ahead of me. Where are you finding Course Requirements and available Selections? Sorry I'm slowww! LOL

I can't wait. I'll be sure to post pictures up after my tour. And, I'm also in the same boat as you all. My 94.2% average has declined to 91.8% !!! Arghh...I really hope they don't care too much.

Yeah I know a few people going to Concordia, but I really want to focus on making new friends. I just wouldn't want to go to a new place, and latch on to whoever I know because I'm out of my comfort zone and end up not socializing much.

I want to join the Outdoors Club, because I've never actually gone hiking or skiing, and want to try it out. I think I'll probably do Model UN too.

Woah, you guys know what clubs to join already? Lol. I'm going to be overwhelmed by the number of clubs available and want to join them all.
Outdoors Club seems awesome. I wanted to hike up Mt. Royal after their Open House.. my friends were like "...no."

I only know 2 people who attend McGill. There might be a few from my graduating class that will go though.
martin, you'll make plenty of new friends. Take lots of pictures! Maybe of dio & prez and douglas as well? ;)

I would love to be a diplomat. Haha it's what I put down as my top career for a lot of random applications. I feel the same way about wanting to be financially stable, having all these comforts, but trying to benefit others as much as I possibly can. And it seems like sometimes it's an impossible combination. I would love to somehow end up working with Doctors without Borders or the World Health Organization. I don't know if that's just some of my naivety talking, but yeah. My mindset is like, "we're all part of this world. we're all in it. there's fixable problems with it. do something about it." Since I'm not smart enough to figure out how to optimize this problem solving thing.. and I have no idea if med or law school can be an option for me; I hope I'll learn something that will give me some eureka! moment and see how I fit in with resolving the lot of issues out there. IDS seems fitting enough at the moment.. as well as Int'l Relations and Peace & Conflict Resolution Studies. Watch at the end of all this I just say screw it and paint on the streets and become a starving artist and cut off my ear..

I have a friend who has the exact same combo of acceptances as me and she's totally undecided; or waiting for Mac Healthsci.. I have a friend in CS/computer engineering who's ditching McGill and Queen's for U f T... a lot going to Queen's, UBC, Mac, Waterloo, Guelph. Bah, the deadline to accept offers is going to come just around the corner.

Edit: I like what the residence thread has turned into.
