WOW! I am retarded. Thank you for that!

NOW I'm even more confused with the # of choices bom

Hahaa. Don't worry about it. It's pretty overwhelming, taking in all this info. Did you visit any of the residences before? I guess it depends what you want your rez experience to be like. I mean, you obviously can't predict where you'll have the best time, but considering money, party life, location, you can probably cross off a couple of your choices.

In terms of location, I know this has been discussed in this thread before, but think what'll happen in wintertime. Going up a hill several times a day is probably going to be a pain, not to mention embarrassing since you'll probably fall. Greenbriar and Solin are totally off-campus. Do you want to be near McGill at all times, or do you want a break when you go home? (So if you're planning on joining/running clubs, it's probably easier to stay on campus).

OK, so obviously McGill is a party school (I mean, it's a university, legal drinking age is 18, you can do the math) so it's not like you'll find any residence that resembles a nunnery when it comes to throwing parties. But Molson Hall has a pretty solid rep as a party rez. If you're in a fairly demanding program (although I guess that's all the programs) or if you just want an occassional break from drunken screaming or if you know you won't do so well if you have the option of either studying (yawn) or getting drunk every night, you might want to consider passing it over.

In terms of money, RVC (although from your name I'm guessing you wouldn't live there anyway) and New Rez are the biggest wallet deflators. Then you have to think about whether you would have to cook yourself or have a mealplan, which also narrows it down somewhat.

ALSO, while on the topic - I actually had no idea that McGill was a party school. I found out that at the Open House, embarassingly enough. I sort of assumed that top students in Canada + demanding programs = no fun ever. How little did I know. That's awesome, though, you get a real uni experience and a degree you won't be embrassed to admit to. WHOA, that was long. Hope that helps.

Greenbriar is actually super close to campus. In the McGill ghetto, around MORE houses and stuff.

http://www.mcgill.ca/files/residences/residencemap.pdf "H" on this map.

I reallllly regret not looking at more residences during Open House... frown

And I think McGill if more of a party city (Montreal) than a party school though. Like it's a little different from Western and Queen's in a sense that the cause of the partying isn't the school, it's MONTREAL. wooo.

I hope school spirit isn't nonexistant though

Ohhh. I must have been thinking of Solin Hall.

I guess you're right about the party thing. I definitely think there's some school spirit, although mostly it's stemmed from making fun of the other universities (Concordia and Queen's the most, though), I think anyway. see: http://www.overheardatmcgill.com/archives/2007/01/15/military-industrial-complex-aint-got-nothing-on-mcgills-superiority-complex/

Hahaha razz

Wow I think we are really set for this school.
My best friend is going to Queens so we will have some rivalry.
I was telling her I'd go to Queen's as a McGill reject.. bwaha. But wow, I'm getting so excited.

I'm reading the McGill Tribune already.. obsessing much?

Since there's so many students coming from out of town.. province, country, continent, etc. + 18 drinking age.. Yeah. There better be fricking school spirit somewhere. =]

Do you guys speak french?

I'm wondering if part-time job is possible off campus..

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I'm so excited. I still stop sometimes and go like "WHAT?? I GOT IN??? YAY!!!!!!"

Yeah, I'm basically planning to write for one of the McGill papers, hopefully.

I think it's just that you got into a competive school, and it's internationally known, and it's not some backwards little 100,000 town but MONTREAL, and it's a totally new experience. I'm so excited, I'm pretty much ready to sit down with an encyclopedia-sized book about McGill and read it cover to cover just to be closer to actually going there (ok, not really but you get what I mean).

I don't speak French, but I'm hoping to learn some over the summer. OK, I'll admit to downloading a French lessons audio book and listening to it (actually on my way to the Open House). (How's that for nerding it up?)

I heard that it's possible to find a job that doesn't require you to speak French because there are some strictly English parts.

Perfecttt. Yeah I hear the west end of montreal is totally anglophone. But my friend at Concordia applied to work at Starbucks and she had to take this french comprehension test..

I'm going to be at this French boot camp thing from Explore this summer big grin So hopefully my french will improve somewhat and get me around the city.

When I was at the Open House and using the metro, the ticketer people all refused to speak English. Lmao.

Whaat? I'm doing the Explore program too! In Montreal actually!

oh, yeah, when I went to Montreal for the first time, my mom and I had the hardest time navigating the subway. We kept going in their random directions. Finally we asked a guy, but he only spoke French so I had to use what limited nonsense I learned in grade 9 to understand him.

LOL. I am still taking french in gr 12 and i swear i have not improved since gr 9 razz Good job with the communication. (I went with my friends and this french girl started asking us for directions in french. Hahaha.)
Explore! Awesome!
I'm going to be in U Vic in BC. You?
my 2nd choice was Universite de Montreal and I realized only just afterwards that I ordered them wrong =_=.. and got in to U Vic. But no complaints!
I was actually waitlisted and only got in like last week. Sooo excited!

yeah, my first choice was Universite de Montreal, and I got in. my friend did the Explore program last summer, but she was in some remote Quebec town, and she said it was really good.

When was your application due? Mine was on April21st and I've been trying to call them today to find out if they got it because honestly, I am just expecting something to go wrong. Like I got the Explore acceptance on Thursday April 13th, along with bursary approval. Then on Friday April 14th, I got into McGill. Which, obviously is too good of a thing so now I'm waiting for McGill to either reject me or the Explore program to fall through, or a plane to fall on my head

Nice! Go to montreal a few days early so you can enjoy Int'l Jazz fest! Darn. I really should've put Montreal first.

I did my online app like back in December and didn't hand in my supplementary documents til the last day it was due.. and they had extended the deadline a lot too o_o...

I was waitlisted back in the beginning of April. I just got in to U Vic last friday, so my forms are due in like a week and a bit. Lol, Monday I heard from Millenium Excellence Awards and Tuesday I heard from McGill. This week has been like too good to be true.

Do you get a credit at U de M?

I don't know if I will be able to go early, because I'll be in Cuba between prom and the Explore thing.

Ahh, you should have put Montreal first! I wasn't really expecting much because my friend told me Montreal is really popular, so when I got I was like cheers batman exclamation . Plus, the program requires everyone to be over 18, ie I actually physically cannot wait. Although now my mom is freaking out with everything that I have to bring, and how I'll have to find ways to prepare my meals since they are very few kitchen appliances where I'm staying.

yeah, at this point I've got

1. MORE house - double
2. MORE house - single
3. New Rez

Unless something drastic changes, it'll probably keep these. I have so much to stress about, I am tired of giving this more of my time than it needs. I am sure that if you're friendly and willing to make friends, you'll have a great time anywhere.

Cuba =o nice!

I'm not sure about rez choices.. I've yet to really put thought into the specific orders but something like:

1) MORE single
2) Douglas single
3) Dio & Prez Rez single
4) MORE double
5) Upper Rez single (Gardner, Molson, McConnell)
6) New Rez double

I don't think I'd be happy with RVC or Solin. How many choices do we have to make on the form? I haven't accepted yet so I don't know how it's filled out.
I guess the list above and then their respective double rooms..

Have you guys accepted yet?
I'm deciding between Queen's and McGill and I'm stuck..
I've always wanted to go to McGill but it seems to make more logical sense to go to Queen's. ahhh

It's basically a list of all the residences, and you list your choices from 1 to like 15. I've accepted and paid the rez deposit. McGill was basically my one and only choice. The other unis I applied to are pretty subpar, in my opinion.

Is Queen's and McGill really that different? I know some of their Arts/Sci programs/courses are very similar. What are the factors you're basing your decision on?

Dude, that's nuts! Cause I am also debating between Queens and McGill and like you, I'm stuck.
McGill was always tops for me, but Queens is also a great school.

So no, I have not accepted McGill yet, maybe I'll just flip a coin colors

Wow, am I the only one who accepted?

I don't know how you guys make your decisions, but I could just see myself at McGill next year, walking up the hill to the Arts building. And I can totally see myself living in a MORE house. This is my dream school. love naughty

heythereb: Thanks for the info. atleast I know I'll be in one of my top 15 big grin

Is Queen's and McGill really similar?
I guess the key differences for me are: amount of school spirit, location, cost..

and martin, what are you leaning towards?

For me:

Queen's:
- lots more school spirit, I really want to enjoy undergrad experience.
- small university town (will probably get tired of kingston really easily.. I was in Kingston for about a week one summer and ran out of things to do downtown... one street.. but then again I wasn't old enough to enjoy some things. I dunno)
- closer to home (3 hrs vs. 6 / or 2.5hrs vs 5.. depending)
- I know more people there/going there.. not really a factor but meh.
- cheaper ... not by a whole lot but helps if I plan to do grad/prof school

McGill:
- Montreal. XD
- 0 financial aid
- Lots of commuters apparently, hence lower school spirit
- 'brand name'... but Queen's is recognized as well in academia =\
- A lot of people have been calling McGill a 'dimming star'.. relying a lot on the past and currently really overrated.
- Are they messed up financially? ie. TA strike?
- Montreal...!

So I guess it's just a matter of, do I want the stereotypical university experience in a smaller community in a university town of like less than 100 000 people? Or do I want to be more independent and live in the most amazing city but with less school spirit and for a higher price tag?

Wow, I just did like a list...
I think I am leaning more towards McGill. It's been my dream school as well before I started thinking about universities, I don't know why I'm hesitating.

How do you know that you're getting 0 Financial Aid?

This is the corniest thing ever, but just go with your heart. I'm getting no scholarship at McGill, and I am with every other university. So that's kind of a downer, but I am kind of having epiphanies all over the place, and just came to the realization that I am really set on having fun in university, and just learning because I want to learn and not care about marks so much, and that I wouldn't want something like money to discourage me from going somewhere I want.

I think the university experience is what you make of it. I mean, if you hang around mostly live in the library, 4.0 GPA people then you'll probably experience little school spirit, whereas if you attend regular hockey/basketball/football (do we even have a football team??) then you'll meet similar minded people.
