Actually, macbooks cost less than a dell xps of the same specs.
For example: you can get a macbook core 2 duo 2.16 ghz, 2 gb ram, 120 gb HD, Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 video card for 1250.
The XPS with almost equivalent specs (2.0 ghz) costs 1400 bux.
Also, if you max out an XPS and compare it to a macbook pro with equivalent specs, it costs roughly the same.
XPS does look nice, no doubt but so does the macbook (opinion).
OS X might be a plague to you, but there are many who think otherwise. The Apple market share isn't increasing for no reason.

You are wrong. If you finish customizing the same stuff (don't forget warranty etc.) you'll see. Even without that. The macbook you're looking at has a "graphics media accellerator". That's one example of the difference. You quoted a $150 diff. in price, and that can be accounted for the graphics card alone. Also other specs will work this way too. Apple's market share is increasing because they're different, and they advertise more.

No, Apple's market share is skyrocketing because more and more people are realizing that using a computer doesnt have to be a chore.

What you dont realize is that 90% of people are not computer nerds like yourself. They just want a nice user experience without the hassle of spyware cleaners, antivirus scans, registry cleaners, defragging etc etc.

I used to get so frustrated when my friends would come to me with their computer problems. I convinced most of them to get Macs, now they're happy, I'm happy, everyones happy.

@ poppy, don't forget, Microsoft isn't the one who has to engage in bashing the competitor to increase sales.

Also, an IBM one would be a good idea. They are really rugged and built to last. as long as you find a good deal (see if anyone you know works for them and can get u a discount.)

p.s. the reason windows needs antivirus and spyware scans is because it owns such a large market share. leopard os x and vista are equally secure (and i would argue vista is more so just from the things i have done on a mac and a pc running vista) (and dont give me that 'cancel' or 'allow' stuff from that commercial for a vista inconvenience, any person (including the home user) who runs vista knows it is nothing like what the vista haters say it is.)

Its called differentiation. Its a marketing tactic. One that seems to be working amazingly well. What Apple's done is highlight people's frustrations with Windows.

If people didnt have so many problems with windows, this wouldnt be boosting Mac sales, now would it?

Does it really matter why?

Im not sure anyone that is annoyed with antivirus/spyware really cares why its gone....just that its gone, period.

I want to buy a laptop, too.
Will probably get a HP, since they are good quality.
Mac Books are pretty, but I don't think I can handle one,
cause no right click, lack of familiarity, a whole bunch of different names,
too different stuff... will make me want to throw it against a wall. Several times.

My question is, is it advisable that I get a French laptop?
It'd really help when writing French essays and such (minoring in French, probably)
cause I hate clicking on the "Symbols" constantly so that I can get l'accent gauche
or whatever else. I've used French keyboards before, so it wouldn't be a problem
at all. I love French keyboards, actually.
I'd probably get the operating system in English again, and just use the keyboard
as the French feature.
Advices?

vista has a keyboard icon on the bottem right of the status bar where u can change the keyboard language to french. also learn the alt shortcuts for word, its much faster. alt 130 is>>é alt 131 is>>â ..etc...

there is no need to buy a french computer or keyboard (if you are familiar with its layout u can use the english one with the french setting)

also wat does every1 think about wat tier laptops are the best. im assuming that most people are going to keep it for 3-4 years then get a new 1. if i get a mid range laptop it will be just becoming obsolete in 3 years. or is it better to go with a fancier one that will last longer???

You can already do ' + e = é and such. My keyboard allows me to type ç é á ó ñ õ ã as foreign characters. See if yours does.

1. And if Macs were so good, they would be the ones with the 90% market share, right?

2. Er ... you really didn't get that. Macs are less prone to virus-attacks since there are fewer viruses out there designed for it. Virus authors go for maximum impact, and there aren't enough Macs to be worth the trouble.

1. Since when did market share become indicative of product quality?

I guess iPods are by far the greatest MP3 players available....considering they have dominant market share....right?

2. Why would you say I dont get it? I know why people dont program viruses for OS X.

My original point still stands. Nobody cares why. The only thing anyone cares about, is that they dont need to run a virus scan, spyware scan, registry cleaner or defragger everyday.

A $1000 laptop is not going to be much more obsolete in 4 years than a $2000 laptop; a $1000 laptop now and a $1000 laptop in 2-3 years is going to be better than a $2000 laptop now. The physical durability of laptops is more of an issue than technical obsolescence. The batteries decay over time - after a year and a half or two years or so you may need to replace it (at around $100). Cases can start to crack (this depends a lot on the case, I've had a bad experience with one particular model of Dell but others seem to be better) I would plan on getting 2 cheaper laptops for the course of your degree over 1 more expensive laptop.
