ckwan wrote:when buying a laptop, what's better AMD or intel?? and why?? Unless you're going for absolute best performance, right now it doesn't matter much (if you are then go with Intel as AMD's having a hard time catching up). AMD cpu's tend to be a bit cheaper but generally have the same performance. In the end it doesn't matter much

Be nice to AMD lol, give them time and they'll catch up. At the mean time buy their processor to show your support!

The best scenario is to check out Consumer's Report - Electronics and you'll find reviews that will greatly help weight hte pro's and con's of each particular model out on the market right now (make sure to grab the Canadian edition)
you can easily find it at your local chapters

Don't even worry about it. haha why do you think people drive expensive cars? Wear expensive suits? People like the way it makes other people view them. If you think i'm a tool because I'm not stingy with money than so be it.

Better graphics, smoother OS, fast powerful processor, and lots of disk space, plus the iLife programs are so much fun. I'd definitely get a Mac if I could afford it.

I spend a lot of money on ridiculous things too but the way I see is that (if you're referring to expensive cars) is that it's like paying $100,000 for a Toyota Camry when you could be getting an Audi for half the price

Clearly not.. that's even stated by Apple as one of their own weaknesses Smoother OS? Sure I'll give you that one, OS X has a lot of nice eye candy Fast powerful processor? It's the same as in any other computer and most others have better processors Lots of disk space? That's really irrelevant to the laptop, you can upgrade that to however much you want whenever with any computer

Toyota Camry is a main stream full-size sedan that MSRP at 20-30 thousand (NOT 100,000). It's Audi that's the expensive one, and their Camry-equivlent full-size sedan, which is the A8, MSRP cheapest starting 10 K and could go as high 17 K if you get all the goodies. To be honest, both Camry and A8 are big heavy family cars, and why would you want that unless you have a family?

I think the point was that in buying a Mac, you are paying more (money) for less (or equivalent PC laptops) as opposed to buying a PC laptop and getting more (laptopwise, features etc) for less (money). The Camry being the overpriced, and the Audi being the steal of a deal.

It would be awesome if you can run Os X natively (no virtual emulators blah blah) on a PC. When that happens, Apple will no longer be a hardware company but a software company like Microsoft lol.

You can! lol it's just not many people do it because you really have to customize the drivers for your computers and some things simply won't work. I have it running natively (triple booting on my laptop) on mine but it was a pain.

I worked with a computer company and from it the evaluations of the laptops were pretty helpful. Macbooks are very good - unfortunately incompatible with older computers but these days alot of businesses are using Mac- however it's a little on the pricy side. The Dell Inspiron was evaluated as being very compatible, easy to use - you don't really need to learn how it works like the Macbooks. The HP Pavillion was known to be brought in the most for repairs. And the Toshiba is decent but also came in alot for repairs.

For a general University student, don't get caught up on too much about specs/spending on something high-end. Most of us will probably only need to run Office/Firefox or IE/MSN. Pretty much anything will handle that fine.
For me, I'm looking at something between 13.3-14.1 inches, above average battery life and with a solid build. Looking to spend around $800 max. (Looking at the Dell Vostro 1400/Dell Inspiron 1420).
