I'm getting a Lenovo this summer, but I don't think they sell that in Canada Lenovo is the biggest computer-producing company in the world, and they bought IBM Thinkpad, so I think their quality is pretty good

Online Shopping > http://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/Right now, it's 25% off until April 7. You can also use a student (10% off) or visa discount ($100 off I think). You can also get EPP (which is up to 40% off) if you know someone who works for IBM and is willing to give you a code to get a discount. There's also SPP (mostly available to US). I must warn you, the customer service for Canada is horrible. It's best to have one of your American relatives to purchase the laptop and have the person ship it to you because Americans receive it within a week and Canadians receive it within months (even though it says 2 to 3 weeks). Sometimes, you don't get parts (ex. missing adapter, memory, etc.) or get defected items. When you call the customer service, they make you wait for more than an hour and hang up on you. Worst customer service ever. McMaster '12

ive never had a problem with a Toshiba... but whatever brand u buy the most important thing is that you take care of it, thats what it will make it last.

i would definetly go with a mac simply because it does not have windows vista. toshiba, acer, sony and HP are decent brand but vista equalizes all of them to a very low level as their are SOOOO many bugs. My friends got a fully loaded computer 4gb RAM and 250 gb memory and it couldn't handle vista. Leopard OS X for mac computers has had a pretty clean track record and it comes with so many cool programs like bootcamp (allows you to boot up in windows or mac OS) Basically I would say that a Mac is a much better way to go, although they are much more expensive because: a) they don't have Vista b) they last a long time c) mac's are overall better computers

vista really is not as bad as everyone says it is, as long as you buy a laptop good enough to support it, it works fine.

don't buy dell! if you do then the only way to have it repaired is through dell ( that is if you want to keep the warnity). I would suggest a macbook if you have the money, but deffinately shop around and find something that has everything you want.

You can also buy refurbished Macbooks off the Apple site. They are only $899, so you're saving a few hundred bucks, which is good.

i'm thinking about getting an HP pavillion. It is now on sale at bestbuy
I have an HP laser printer and scanner.
I've had the scanner since 2001 and it still works like new!!
I got my HP laser printer about a year ago and NO PROBLEMS while my epson printers are constantly getting jammed and running out of ink.

Personally I don't like Macs cause you need to learn how to use it and for some people it takes a while. I think it would be a good idea to look for one that is relatively light. It's a hassle carrying it around. Dell laptops are not bad.. you can get one for a decent price that will be durable and i would suggest you get the warranty because if anything happens you can get a new one or get it fixed. I use to have a Toshiba and it's not bad if you like a smaller screen 12-13 inches.

I just bought a Thinkpad (T61p) for an amazing price with the 25% off sale and EPP. Total with tax came to around 1300 and it took less than two weeks to arrive. IMO, thinkpads are by far the best built laptops that you can get.

Thanks for your help!! While I do not know what brand is best, the one thing I'd recommend is that it should have 2 GB RAM memory (not 1 GB!). Secondly, if you want to carry it around, look at weight and battery life. good point, about battery life.. never woulda thought of that anything else i should look into ? my buddy has a cool one, hers has like a built in camera and suchh,.. lol.

Also, Macs are for women. Everyone I know with a Mac is a guy. Most of them are in Computer Science ;P Anyways - do pay attention to weight and battery life when buying a laptop. I'm not saying pay a huge premium to go to something ultralight (e.g. I don't recommend going for something like the Macbook Air), but you will notice a difference between 5.5lbs and 6.5lbs on something you are carrying around on a regular basis; 6.5lbs or so is pretty typical for a 15.4" laptop. The Macbooks are fairly thin and light for their respective screen sizes. Oh - one other thing to point out - I remember when helping my mom pick out a laptop I was picking them up (they were tethered down but could be lifted up a bit) to test out the weight. The floor models in Best Buy didn't have the batteries in them, which does represent a significant portion of the weight. So be aware of that, if you feel a big empty space in the bottom, it doesn't have the battery in.

There is something seriously wrong with them seeing as the compability of most IDE's is WINDOWS-based. Let alone the wide array of games that are unavailable in Mac and how the user-customization is kept at a bare minimum. If anything, COMP SCI STUDENTS should be running LINUX on a nice AMD machine.
