My friends and I were planning one but our principal said it promoted unhealthy body image so we can't do it. we had a lot of interest too.

So for those 30 hours you only eat rice and water?
... How is that then a famine and not just eating less?

It was at my school once and i really liked it! most of my friends cheated but like its a good cause and it was an interesting experience! although i do agree, they could spruce it up a bit and make it a lil more interesting so it will draw more people into participating!!!

In my school, I've organized the 30-Hour Famine for two years now and we allow people to drink as much fruit juice and water. They can get 1/2 bowl of rice if they really have to. Waiting on the world to change. ♥

Yeahh, the 30 Hour Famine is GREAT. Really good for raising awareness about the issue. I'm doing it this year... 5 minutes left till I get to eat lol.
We were shown this YouTube video yesterday... 29,000 kids die from hunger each day. That's insane.
Narrator: Tobias went to a try-out for the Blue Man Group hoping to be seen. *Tobias is hit by a car* Narrator: Unfortunately, it was dusk, and he couldn't be seen.

You can pretty much drink whatever you want at my school. I stick to water or green tea. But some kids (this is really stupid IMO) drink Red Bull. Chocolate Milk, juice, whatever. We can also have freezies if we want, but I never have. desiderantes meliorem patriam

The 30 hour famine is awesome!! I'm hypoglycymic (can't spell) so i can't go very long without sugars but when my church did it the last few years we got to drink juice. For anyone who is planning one, if you have a smaller group (20 people or so) do a picture/video scavenger hunt. When we did it it took four hours and i didn't think about eating once. It was incredibly fun. I'm also one of those people who have to eat every two hours but it wasn't nearly as bad as i thought. As long as you do something to keep you occupied its fine. Also, chewing gum only causes you to be more hungry.

Congratulations mdoucet!
I was participated in teh famine in gr. 9/10, and it's pretty fun. We're only allowed to drink water/juice/popsicles (although some ppl challenge themselves to stick to water). It's not as hard as it sounds, it kinda comes in waves, like the first day's lunch was probably the worst, cuz around dinner time, you kinda forget being with friends and chit chatting/card games/etc. The 2nd worst is when ur going to sleep and it's quiet so u start to remember, but the next day it's not that bad either, u just kinda zone out a few times lol, but it's not serious really. Um, this year they had a minimum collection of $100/person, just because they were trying to minimize the number of kids involved (to minimize the number of teachers who had to stay/caretakers/etc). Oh, and you get 10 hours, which is reasonable, considering that you really aren't doing anything. It's like ur getting hours for the amount of time you spent collecting money, rather than the fasting itself. That being said, as much as I do support ngos, I was kinda upset when I found out that world vision is a for-profit company...

Our school has had them in the past, but recently not enough people have signed up because they decided you have to raise $100 in order to sign up and hardly anyone could be bothered. Apparently a few years ago, one of my teachers brought in a pizza and ate it in front of the students, and one kid bought 2 slices from him for $40.

They sleep in the caf and party and stuff and they don't eat for 30 hours only rice and water and after the famine breaks you get pizza and stuff. These 30 hours also contribute to your voluntary hours. I'm most likely gonna do it for the voluntary hours I need 7 more >< same at my school except they don't eat anything at all for 30 hours UBC Bachelor of Sciences in Fall 2008

I'd really like to participate in something like this, but my school is really tiny and I don't think enough students would get involved for us to have the event. Does anyone know if there's another way to get involved? Just fasting by myself doesn't seem all that appealing...

Hey, you could organize a 30 hour famine for a different charity if World Vision requires a minimum number of students. Just get a teacher to volunteer to stay the night and support the cause, and put up posters/announcements and donor forms. I know that when it started off at my school, like a decade or so ago, the school used to be tiny too, so they only had like 10-15 kids sign up.
p.s. Yeah, some teachers are jerks too, I remeber 2 years ago, it was the staff appreciation lunch for the 2nd day, so we were all walking into the staff room to pick up some juice for lunch, and we see a pasta/salad/wraps/amazingly delicious smelling food fest.
