Has anyone heard of this? At my new school I found out that students participate in a 30 hour famine. They sleep in the caf and party and stuff and they don't eat for 30 hours only rice and water and after the famine breaks you get pizza and stuff. These 30 hours also contribute to your voluntary hours. I'm most likely gonna do it for the voluntary hours I need 7 more ><

Does the whole 30 hours count towards volunteer hours? If so that seems completely and utterly stupid to me, considering you need a total of 40 hours. I mean, I can see letting people count some hours, but.. I mean.. if they let you count the whole thing you get volunteer hours for sleeping I think you missed the part where you're also supposed to fundraising for I forget who but it realates to hunger.

We've had it at my school for a few years now. Its very dull though. Every goes around their normal lives and if they complete it they get a small breakfast on the 30th hour. I've donated but i can't do it myself. I get crabby after 4-5 hours without food, no way in heck I can make it 30 hours

We have it at my school. The number of hours depends on the amount of money you raise. You only get icilces and water at my school, and a pizza party after. I can't go that long without food, knowing that I can't eat.

At my school it's actually pretty fun. To get a registration form is like getting on the VIP list for the hottest club. They set up PS2s(PS3 this year) n Xbox 360s, and there is stuff like flag football and basketball going on all night, and you're free to roam the school. In the morning the teachers make you a nice all you can eat breakfast with pancakes, eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, sausage etc. We always make over $3000 for each famine and it goes to United Way, and some of the homeless shelters around the community.

I've done the 30 hour famine four times (grade 8, 10, 11, and 12... couldn't do it in 9th because I had my wisdom teeth out on the same day) and will probably do it again. Only in grade 8 did the school do it as a joint effort where we all had a big sleepover in a stage room / playroom of a church. In all the other grades we just registered with the school and did it individually.
@Kaylyla, you get 10 hours of community service toward your diploma for the 30 hour famine.

I got 15 hrs at my school, but i think that could of been in part for helping to organize some of the breakfast items. I got the local Sobeys to donate a pallet of Pancake mix and Maple Syrup and M&M to donate 20 lbs of sausage.

30 hour famine is great for helping other countries that are less fortunate and it is great that communities get involved in certain activities to help 3rd world countries

I've organized 30-Hour Famine two years running and it is this fantastic way of experiencing what a lot of people all over the world have to go through everyday--hunger. It's an amazing event and I really encourage all of you to take part in it and fight hunger!
Waiting on the world to change. ♥

Everyone brings xbox360's and we link them and play halo. We use the schools tv's, and projecters as screens. We turn the caff into a dance club, with lights and stuff, games in the gym...last year I played Ultimate Dodgeball for 8 hours...I feel on the floor and couldn't move after hahaha (no hours for 20 hours, than use all your energy >.<). We only get water, tea, and jucies. If you get sick you're allowed a bowl of white rice. In the morning we make breakfest (pancakes, juices, etc). It's so much fun. And honestly not hard at all. Just leave the school at lunch, and stay away from the caff. Oh and for community hours, we get whatever is outside of school class hours. desiderantes meliorem patriam

my school does not have a 30 hour famine but a 24 hour famine, students are "locked" in the school for 24 hours - they cannot eat and they cannot leave the school when they want. I thought that all we would do id play games and joke around with our fellow class mates, i was shocked to see that there was an educational purpose. Before anything started (games etc) everyone ahd to watch a video about poor/dirty water in africa. The video was sickening...here i am running around with water that i dont care to much about while 100s of people are dyign for water each and everyday. The video really made me think which was the whole point of the 24 hour famine. I think that my school did a great job showing us what its like to live without our essentail things. PLUS every had to raise 75 dollars or more to participate which all went to different areas, like for clean water and beds for kids/adults who sleep on the cold wet floors. overall i was impressed!

At my high school every year they have a 30 hour famine, and there is a huge waiting list for people to do it. It's a super easy way to get community service hours, while sleeping over with your friends.

Even though I finished my community hours in grade 10, I still participate every year. Not only is it for a good cause (fundraising for World Vision) but also a lot of fun. I never felt hungry, though, and never touched the rice; just drank some water. At my school you get 10 community hours for participating.
