I've been told if you can dance you can learn to become a cheerleader. i would like to hear from a cheerleader perhaps. I'm am a dancer and i can jump and kick as high as possible. what are the chances that i could be trained into becoming a cheerleader. Im generally a fast learner but the only think i can do is a kartwheel or a roundoff... kinda lame and i'm reallt intrigued by cheerleading it looks hard and challenging but so much fun!! is it possible to get into it so late? or am i better off sticking to dance in university because that is an option?

well im not a cheerleader, but i know that you dont always have to be a great gymast to become a cheerleader, a lot of cheerleading is about personality and charisma. im not saying it isnt hard work because im sure that it is, but i think that if you really want to do it, work hard, talk to some professional cheerleaders or read some interviews with them. sure it'll probably be harder to get in because you haven't been doing it your whole life but you said your a dancer, so its not as if you have no experience with competition or showmanship. good luck!

my girlfriend's a dancer, and she's been cheerleading for two years (high school).

she's pretty much one of the best (if not the best) at most of the stuff that cheerleaders do, i guess she just lacks gymnastics/tumbling experience. she's been really involved with dance throughout her life and it's definitely given her an advantage to cheering. most of the "dancing" in cheerleading isn't real dancing anyway.. just minor choreographed movements/motions.

keep in mind that cheerleading isn't all about being thrown up in the air. there are tops, bases, thirds, spots, etc.. i don't knwo all the different positions but i'd say to definitely give it a go.. all my friends who cheer are really enthusiastic about it and love it. and i'm sure with your dance exp. you'll be able to pick it up fast.

Hi! I think you should definately go for it. I cheered for my university for two years - competed at nationals and local competition. I didn't have any previous cheerleading experience, but I thought it looks fun to be thrown in the air. And it is! I do believe anyone can join cheerleading I think that's the beauty of it. I do not tumble btw, although you would have a higher chances of being guaranteed a spot on the team if you do, but don't let that stop you from trying out. Cheerleading requires a lot of strength and endurance- these things you can work on your own. Try to improve your overall fitness and flexibility. We do a lot of pushups, sit ups, jumps. There are exercises and conditioning during practice but sometimes that may not be enough, so we are required to hit the gym outside of practice.

Bottom line is. Just go for it smile Try out! albino

Seeing as how I'm not a cheerleader but was in gymnastics for a couple years way back, I can tell you that it takes a lot of hard work. I generally find dancing alot more appealing than cheerleading for the choreography and for the different styles of it whereas cheerleading just has one style that combines everything else. But then again, that's just my preference. If it was me, I'd stick with dancing.

I know cheerleading is really challenging but I'm sorry cheerleading squads look so stupid. With all that make up and the huge fake smiles... they look like airheads even though they're amazing athletes.

hey.. so i've been a cheerleader for four years and i've got to tell you.. being a dancer means nothing really.. sure you're flexible, but you also need to have core strength and balance. If you've got that then awesome, the only one other thing i would suggest is watch some cheerleading moves.. dancers tend to be extremely fluid, where as cheerleading dancing is cute, but tight and always fast. movements are sharp where as sometimes in dance you want the softer motions. As long as you remember that you should be set. As for your jumps, the only thing that could pose a problem (but maybe not) would be the jump preps. Again it's just tight movements that I've found dancers to sometimes struggle with.

On a lighter note, cheerleading is an amazing sport and if you're willing to learn and work your butt off then you should do fine!! Try out for your team either way, and even if you don't make it, ask if you can train with them in hopes of learning the proper skills for the next season!
Good luck!cheers
