11,900 is the max you can get from OSAP, 7,000 of which you have to pay back.

I heard from Waterloo that their OSAP doesn't pay for Residence* you get a financial aid check for max last year 350/week*
Also I think it depends on the school as well
*Not something I've looked too deeply yet

OSAP assesses your need differently based on whether you will be living at home or living away from home, and will provide you with more funding if you will be living away from home. It doesn't exactly cover "everything", you are expected to have some funds from other sources as well (jobs, parents, scholarships, bursaries..). Note that if you are planning on living in residence at a nearby university they will not cover you for that, there is a minimum distance away that you have to go although apparently it's possible to appeal that. The distance is something like 40km (which I think is ridiculous, 10km or 20km and within public transit coverage would make more sense to me..).

Yes, be careful of the 40km problem. As was said you can appeal it but OSAP is strict.
I am 40.5 kms away so i am okay but one of my sibling's friends was 39kms away and she was told no. There is one bus in the morning and one in the afternoon from our town to Kingston and that is that. She appealed and won because she had some evening classes. But she sure got worried.

Also remember that OSAP is taking into account as to whether you will be taking co-op or not. They know that you will be making a lot of money (well, more than a regular student would) while you are in school. Because of this, of course they're not going to give as much money.. they know that most Waterloo students get out of school with very little in loans to pay back because of their co-op jobs.
I know that for myself, if I choose to go to Waterloo I will only get about $2,500 because I am taking co-op.. if I go to York I will get $11,000. I'd be living in residence for both.

hey guys! thanks for your replies Yeah i just checked my OSAP estimated amount and i'm low 4000. If you are getting a scholarship, say 2000, will they take that amount out of ur osap amount (not entrance scholarships. im talking about theones that schools give, or say the "excellence awards". thanks!

Doesn't it also depend a lot on your parents financial situation? 11,500 isn't that bad but then again, I've had teachers who had just finished paying off their OSAP and they're in their like, late 30s and 40s.

Sorry, I meant 11,900 of which 7,000 you have to pay back.
For sure it does depend on your parents' income and that is why many students get no money.
Ooosh, I heard that Queens was also good with OSAP people and gives out bursaries on top of your 11,900.
Yes, some of my teachers were talking about their student debt too. It really stops you from moving on with your life. Some of them are in their late 30s or so and don't own real estate.

Just in terms of debt when graduating, do keep in mind that a portion of that will depend on the choices you make while attending school. First of all, which school you attend will make a huge difference - for some programs tuition varies widely, at some schools you'll have much higher living costs, etc. And while some people literally need every penny (and then some) that they get from OSAP, many others don't. If you fall into the second category, it may be easy to get into habits like that fancy coffee in the morning. $3 most days for a year is $1000 or so. Just remember that little choices like that (or bigger ones, like buying the latest iPod) do add up, and if you're on loans it's money that you don't really have and that you will end up paying interest on.

Yeah I got $11 900 last year (first year) plus a Queen's bursary of $3500 which did not affect my OSAP at all. I got $11 900 again this year after making $4000 over the summer, I did not apply for the bursary again (I didn't look into it like I should have, I thought that you were automatically enrolled to receive money based on need but you do need to apply).

If someone applys to OSAP, and there application is initially denied you can appeal the decision can you not? I know people who are in need financially that have been denied when according to the spplication process it would have appeared that they were eligible. These aquaintances were unaware of a possability of appeal. Does anyone have any experience or any more info with this type of situation?

There definitely is a possibility to appeal in some circumstances. But I believe they are fairly specific as to what those circumstances are.

I'm a bit confused about OSAP. When can I apply, if I'm planning to start university this fall? I saw on the website that they do not have updated applications yet.
