IT depends on the subject. For example, in Math, as long as you pay attention during the lesson in class, you can't really get behind. However, in certain subjects, especially Social Science, reading is quite essential.

Trust me, even if you understand every single thing the prof says, if you don't actually try solving the problems yourself, you probably won't do well.

For highschool math, just pay attention in class, do the homework, and if you fall behind, ask for help. Not eveyone is a math genius, the teachers know that and know that some people will struggle so they know how to help you.
