Hey I have a bit of a dilemma here. You see, I applied to Carleton and Windsor, both for civil engineering, and I've been accepted at both, and so far I've visited Carleton and absolutely loved it, but I have yet to visit Windsor. My problem, if you can call it that, is that Carleton has guaranteed me $11 000 over 4 years (entrance scholarship), but Windsor, with all of their extra scholarships (residence, outstanding scholars awards, as well as entrance scholarships) has offered me a total of $27 000 over 4 years. But I really liked Carleton, and I don't want to base my decision on money, know what I mean? Anyway, has anyone gone to Windsor or Carleton? Does anyone have any opinions on which is better? Why does Windsor give out so much more?

i would decide to go to Carleton over Windsor because you like it a lot and it's also in a nice location. $11,000 is a very good deal especially if you can get co-op with that which i definitely recommend. Don't base your decision on money especially if Carleton has co-op. Although $27,000 sounds like a great deal you can earn more at Carleton if they have co-op and you wouldn't regret it if you like it. I'm sorry i can't help you out much however I understand how you feel as Ottawa offered me a very good scholarship and the location is nice but i will be attending Waterloo because of the program in Psychology (it ranked higher than Yale and the second highest among universities in Canada and the US!). I guess what i'm trying to say is that you should research more about the civil engineering programs that both universities have to offer, visit the University of Windsor to check out the place and how friendly people are, which location you like the best and why and whether or not one of them offers co-op. best of luck on figuring this out!

You just missed the Windsor open house by a week- I've gone the last 3 years. But I'm sure if you called you could schedule a tour. Take a look at the campus (I'll admit it's not the best in regards to open space and such because of its location), but learn more about the programs at either school.

In response to your question about going to Carleton or Windsor, I think I can help you out. I personally am not in civil engineering but I do attend the University of Windsor and have friends in that program. The reason Windsor gives out so much more money is because they have a lot of funding. BUT dont be fooled by Windsors high scholarships and money giveaways. THEY LIE! Yes first semester you will recieve those scholarships, but second semester if you dont maintain a i believe its something crazy like a 11.5 which is like a 90% average, all your scholarships are taken away. And since you already had those scholarships deducted off your fees for second semester you end up owing the school all the money you would have received in scholarships. I ended up owing the school over 1200 dollars because I didnt maintain a high enough average. I am not saying its impossible but most students DO NOT maintain these marks for second semester. First semester is your time to figure out how school works, join teams and clubs and party. It is hard to stay very focused and maintain really high grades because it is a huge transition from high school! So If I were you, look which school has the better program, but if you really like Carleton I would go there! Windsor is great, I love it, but they really screw you over in scholarships and funding in the long run! If you are planning on playing sports then you should consider Windsor because they have an excellent athletic program and are one of the only schools that offer athletic scholarships. And living expenses in Windsor are very cheap which is also a bonus. The downtown is also a great time! There is so much to do. But the Windsor Campus is not that great. Its fine but its not pretty. I heard that Carletons is one of the ugliest in Canada though so I wouldnt base my choice on pretty campuses. Anyways, I hope this helps a bit. If you have any other questions.. post away!

Ouch, I know plenty of places want you to keep up marks to renew scholarships in future years, but per semester could be pretty brutal. One question to ask with those scholarships - if you lose them one year (or semester apparently) can you regain them in the future? I know sometimes you can and sometimes you can't.

Hey thanks I appreciate 99% of your post except for this part - I thing you heard wrong about Carleton because I took a tour there and it's actually pretty aesthetically pleasing - it's near downtown but kind of off by itself so its kinda cool. Anyway thanks...

Little update: Waterloo was voted least visually pleasing Campus a couple years ago; they haven't changed much, if not gotten worse. Carleton's much nicer in the summer time, rather than the colder winter months.
Look into what else the school offers too. You're going for the whole experience, remember?

I'm a Carleton student, so obviously I'm biased, but still. This is a pretty tough dillema you're facing, and make sure not to take it too lightly. The financial burden of univeristy is pretty huge, but in the end it comes down to where you want to go. You can always make it work, through student loans or a part time job, as long as you're happy at the school and the city. Try to get down to Windsor and see the campus and the city before you make any big decisions.
