i'd say those with the highest employment rate for graduating students would qualify as "best universities", since most of us go on to secondary education in order to find a job and financial stability in the future. number of Nobel Prize winners among past alumni? haha please...

Mt. Allision Univeristy has more Rhodes Scholars per capita than any Canadian University.. so they'd trump U of t of you look past it's huge size. Just a thought for you fanboys.

The first year Maclean's did their rankings, in 1991, they did not divide the universities into categories. Mt. Allison was third, behind McGill and Queen's, and just ahead of U of T. They have also consistently been in the top 2 Primarily undergrad schools every year Maclean's has done their ranking. That's the most consistent performance of any school across all of the categories. And primarily undergrad has the largest number of schools, at 21, vs. 15 for Medical Doctoral and 11 for Comprehensive.

Of course, I say that while at the same time saying I don't think the Maclean's rankings are particularly meaningful. It's also at or very near the top in the senior year measures of the NSSE survey (although I have to confess based on first year results it would be more middle of the road).

FAQ's:
1. Will I get in? See: electronicinfo.ca for Ontario schools. If you have a couple percent above the marks there and it's not looking at supplementary, the answer is almost certainly yes.
2. Anything else: Google it before asking.

I got into McGill, U of T, Mac, and was even applying for St. Fx, but I chose Waterloo because I'm in an engineering program. I can understand that if you didn't know what branch of engineering you wanted to go into, going into a specific, work intensive program from day one would be a little intimidating. But, the Waterloo coop program is second to none, and although you'll never have another summer vacation, you get to apply what you learn right away. And make lots of money.

So as someone in an engineering program, Waterloo's the best university, if you know what program you want to be in, and you want to work really hard, then party really hard. Then continue working hard. Then go away on coop and make money right away. But that's engineering in general.

However, if I didn't know what program I'd wanted to be in, I would have gone to Mac. I was talking to a prof there and he told me that profs always switch from working between UW and Mac and, from a professors view, they were equally good programs. The main difference is that at Mac you have one general year before you choose what branch of engineering you want to commit to. To me, that would've been overkill, since I knew I wanted to be in chemical, but that year might've been crucial to the indecisive person.

Anyhow, the name of a school might get you an interview, but it won't get you the job. The most important thing is to find a university that is the right fit for you. It's an awful lot of money to waste if you don't.

For Ontario students, it is pretty much either an Ontario school or one of the two big non-Ontario schools (McGill, UBC). Alberta definitely gets overshadowed by those two, and, to be honest, I never thought Alberta was as reputable as it is.

I'm learning right? confused I signed up this forum to learn more about university life and so on..
(when all my friends go to uni (I am born in 1990 btw) , and I am the one who is still left in highschool..I feel left out and am dying to learn more about uni life)

True, I know I haven't done many research from other universities to say that I know this stuff, and I know that I act like all-knowing student...
But I am just trying to help out others by giving my opinion (like you guys give me advices when I ask something) but I dunno, I guess my wording just seems wrong I guess. kk, if you guys want a disclamer, next time I give my opinion, I will make sure to give it.

That's fine and a lot of people are here to learn more about university and whatnot. It's just the way you word it. You're going to freak out some gullible high school kid who assumes what you are saying is fact

I think it completely depends on the program. I'm applying to theatre programs (I know... smile), so I wouldn't even consider Waterloo or other universities with an otherwise "good reputation," because their drama programs are theory based. If you actually want to work in theatre (as an actor or playwright, as I do), those programs are not the best choice.

For the program I'm interested in (BFA Theatre), my opinion is:
1. Ryerson
2. UTM/Sheridan College (that's the partner program)
3. UVic (for their theatre/writing double major)
4. Windsor
5. Concordia (their playwrighting major)

However, I would choose George Brown College over all of those, but no one asked about colleges. smile

Accepted: Acadia (Theatre Studies), Windsor (Drama BAH), UTM (Humanities), UVic (Theatre), Concordia (Creative Writing), Guelph (Theatre Studies), Trent (Cultural Studies)

The best engineering is at McMaster?

Yes, material & some other "traditional" types of engineering. In terms of computer & electronics, U Waterloo is the best (for undergrad).

ugh, I do believe it is common fact that UofT is far better than McMaster in ANY engineering colors . Now between Waterloo and UofT (the 2 best in Canada for engineering IMO) the only one where Waterloo wins is really in their software engineering (since UW is a software / comp sci based school). In terms of Electronics, Computer Hardware etc, UofT I believe comes out on top.

McMaster Masterial Science & Engineering is #1 in Canada & 1 of the top 6 in North America. If you don't believe me, go ask your UT prof. Mac also has a nuclear reactor, I believe it's also 1 of the top universities in the world for nuclear & radiation research & nuclear engi, since most universities in the world do not have this kind of facility. But in terms of electronics & computer, Waterloo is the way to go.

UT engi is not really really really famous for anything in engi, in other words the programs are all great but none of them are fantastic (maybe engi sci or engi phys is).

Waterloo engi is great in terms of software, computer & electronics, not others.

UA is probably better in terms of oil & stuff.

PS: people always have this misconception that McGill & UT are #1 in everything & Waterloo is the best engi school. It's not true.

^ WTF makes one program better than another anyway? Because the professors are the best of the best in their fields of research?

I think it is almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy: the smartest high school students go to the most "well-known" programs and receive roughly the same quality of education as everyone else, but they come out ahead of everyone else because they were the smartest students to begin with.
