Hi I suggest getting involved with Kids Help Phone (www.kidshelpphone.ca for more information). I've been with them for the past 3 years. You make a lot of friends and well as learning knew skills that you can use for the rest of your life. It also looks really good on a resume

Hey! Since you are so new to the area it would be great for you to get out there and do some new things. I've been 'candy striping' for the past 4 years. It has been one of the most amazing tasks I've ever taken on. I'm interested in the medical field and this was a great way to see if it was something I really wanted to do. I've met people of all ages and connected with both the patients and staff, some of whom I still keep in contact with. Just a thought, but either way, don't be afraid to go and try new things, it may turn out to be something amazing.

It's pretty easy to find a volunteer job because you are doing work for free for someone else, therefore you will be the one calling all the shots.

Why not get involved on campus? Working for your faculty association or students' council looks great on a resume. If you're not a politics nerd like me, there are lots of other groups which can suit pretty much any interest or hobby University is not just about the actual classes but everything that happens on campus in between. I didn't get involved on campus until my second year and missed out on a lot of great events because of it.

I am looking into being a Big Sister. This is perfect for a college/university student because it is only one hour of commitment per week.

The best way to go for volunteering is SPCA, it's an animal shelter. they are always looking for volunteers and your services are always needed. you can apply online for volunteering and you get to have fun with really cute animals, i mean whats better then that??? you could always volunteer at a local animal shelter to, they usually need your help to!! sometimes their are animal adoption fair's, they are always in need of volunteers. good luck and have fun!

VOLUNTEERING gives me such an incredible feeling after that I do it with a whole bunch of places like my church, the hospital, at school, and the community in general. I would say that you should go to what you are into (sports = community centres, careers in health care = hospitals, etc) Hope you find one that you will enjoy a lot! Waiting on the world to change. ♥

Volunteering is an awesome experience that makes me feel very good about myself at the end of the day. It is to bad that not a lot of teenagers around where I live enjoy volunteering because it is a win-win situation all the time. The people that you help or the organization you help benefit from your time given and you are rewarded by feeling appreciated and making new friends. To all of you out their who haven't experienced volunteering I would definitely tell you to go put yourself out there and help someone, it will make you feel alot better at the end of the day.

Volunteering at nursing homes is pretty cool too, so many people just want some one to talk to and they have good stories to tell too.

What kind of volunteering are you interested in? Why do you want to volunteer - for example if you want exposure to different cultures volunteering at a refugee or immigrant center would be great. If you want exposure to kids, the Boys & Girls club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, etc.
Also, are you interested in getting your feet wet and seeing about a possible career in the future? If you wanted to work in the correctional system (prisons) you could volunteer at the Elizabeth Fry Society or the John Howard Society for instance.
Hope that gives you a starting place.
Cheers!
Scott

Search around the net. Walk around your neighbourhood, network. There's a ton of volunteer placements available than people to fill them ;) All you gotta do is look around a bit.
I know a few years back, I emailed such organizations as MADD and the Multiple Sclerosis Association of Canada about my availability. They will get back to you, the hours aren't bad and everyone is very accommodating.
