Hey there so I plan on taking kinesiology or physical education and I was hoping to find information on the programs at Mac, Queen's, Western, Toronto, York, Windsor and Laurier. I was hoping for things like personal experiences, class sizes what you need to get in etc.

thanks

Kinesiology appears to be the laughingstock of the science faculty. I'm not sure why.

I think it's because you get so many students that go into phys ed and have no idea what they want to do and sit around taking 3 courses a semester and getting drunk. Or you get the athletes who take 7 years to do their degree so they can play sports and have an easy courseload.

^ Not to mention (at Western, at least) that you can take such difficult-sounding courses as "Canoe skills," "Dance," and "Hockey skills."

It's the same everywhere. I would say about half of my rugby team is in phys ed and their classes sound like jokes. In fact they are taking a Rugby class right now. I'm sure it's super hard for them razz

Hmm, I didn't know Kinesiolgy was a phys-ed type thing. I thought it was like being a dietician or something, health advisors. So I guess you don't have to study human biology and stuff?

(I'm learning a lot here)

Kinesiology is in the faculty of phys ed. I think you need to know anatomy and biology most likely. I don't know much about it, but it probably isn't a joke, it's that in general a lot of phys ed classes are jokes.Although I'm sure many engineers would fail the courses because you actually have to be athletic and good at sports.

Hmm, at York there is an Arts faculty stream of Kinesiology and a Science faculty stream. I guess one is more oriented towards Biology and one is more of a phys-ed deal.

Don't you love hearing people talk about how difficult their class in "intro to the visual arts" or "careers for history graduates" are? Some species of potatoes are more intelligent.

Just a general observation, even though the Kinesiology curriculum has nothing to do with actually running laps, alot of Kin/phys-ed kids at Queen's are really fit. I greatly enjoy any classes in the Physical education center.

I would beg to differ. Fit indeed, but the kin girls tend to be either ripped or built (think legs like tree trunks... as a rugby player, I'm sure you are well aware). No guy can be attracted to a girl who can squat more than he can.

If you're looking for hot girls, psychology classes are loaded with them. I hear (night)clubs are also filled with them.

Haha. But then you also get the volleyball players and the track girls. And in general they are pretty attractive. And yes, as a rugby player I do know about the tree trunk legs.

When I was doing my off season training last year I got one of my guy friends who is pretty scrawny to come with me and I think he was a bit embarrassed. He kept trying to do the same weight as me and was exhausted and had horrible form because the weight was too much but he refused to go down in weight until I convinced him that everyone needs to start with a lower weight to get their form right. And I wouldn't say I'm ripped by any means. I'm about 120lbs 5'8" and pretty fit for my size I guess.

Nightclubs do have hot girls. But good luck picking one up. And good luck picking one up that isn't dirrrrty.

I appreciate beautiful women of all sizes, no I don't mind if she's stronger than me.. good for her. Unfortunately the Kin guys are also equally fit.

Nightclubs- i've never been to one, I'm not really into that scene. When I meet a girl in class at least i know that she's got something upstairs.

Now that I think of the female PTs at Western's gym, some of those kin majors are pretty hot. It's only that when I picture a kin major, I think of this girl who lives in my townhouse complex and I also usually see at the gym. She is like 5'4", maybe 90 lbs, and she can squat 155 lbs. She has the testosterone facial features and you can see all of her muscle striations, and, even though she is like half my weight, she looks like she could beat the sh*t out of me.

There is this couple who I also see a lot at the gym. The guy is just starting out (or at least I think/hope), and the girl is always upstaging him, e.g. when they were both doing bench press and they took off the plates after the guy was finished, I was thinking "OK, the girl is just going to do the bar," but, no, she ended up adding on heavier weights. I don't know how that guy does it. If my girlfriend were stronger than me, I wouldn't go to the gym with her; I would go independently until I could do more than she can. I just imagine walking down a dark alley, and some mugger comes along and tries to steal my wallet... and then my girlfriend ends up kicking his a$$. Not right.

Look, I go to Western. This school used to be affiliated with the Anglican Church. There aren't any dirty girls in the clubs that university students frequent.

Nah, two of my roommates, though, will go to the clubs mainly just to check out those dirrrrty girls.

People often have these misconceptions that the 'phys ed' girls are ridiculously strong, and this is true, but only compared to other girls who are out of shape.
Every gym you go to, you will not find a girl that benchpresses over 200lb no matter how big she is, so don't worry about finding tanks in there.
Only the skinny, anorexic guys are afraid of women that are able to do a few pushups because it somehow makes them feel weak, which is the truth.

Eh, my boyfriend is like 6'1" and 185 lbs and can bench press me I'm pretty sure so it's not a problem. Besides when we work out together he usually likes to do totally different exercise than me and I only get him to spot me on bench or something.

And 155 lbs isn't that much to be able to squat. I'm about 120 lbs and on my last fitness testing I did 155 lbs to 6 reps or whatever it was that I needed to do. YOur legs are powerful things and are really easy to whip into shape. But I know what you mean about super ripped girls. There's this one girl I always see who is like 5 feet tall and is disgustingly ripped it's weird. And then there are the guys whose arms stick out funny because their muscles are so big and that's just weird. Then there's also this anorexic chick who works out every day and it's actually disturbing, I have to leave the gym when she's there.

Here there are always dirty girls at the night clubs. There are a lot of really nice, normal ones too, but they're usually just out with their girlfriends and perceive any guy who talks to them as a creep.

Kinesiology is essentially the study of human movement. I assume when you mean "like a dietitian", you mean that they both have a role as advisers to living a healthy lifestyle? I think that more or less is the case, although you can go a lot of different directions with it.

Those directions do include going heavily into the phys ed side of things - gym teacher, coach, personal trainer type stuff - but it's not limited to that. Here's a profile of what a Kinesiologist might do. As you can see there there's other elements that are more rehab and research related.

I think it tends to attract a lot of people who like sports, but I'm not sure you have to really like sports to go into it. I'm sure this can vary by school, but while they will offer classes on certain sports, I don't think you really have to take any of them (or at least not many) if you don't want to go into that area. That could well vary by school and program (e.g. different specializations or options).

FAQ's:
1. Will I get in? See: electronicinfo.ca for Ontario schools. If you have a couple percent above the marks there and it's not looking at supplementary, the answer is almost certainly yes.
2. Anything else: Google it before asking.

5'4" and 90lbs is seriously underweight. As in, it works out to a BMI of 15.4, which is, well, less than that of a all of the supermodels listed here. If she's got the muscle mass to squat 155lbs, she's gotta weigh more than that. Maybe only 100-110, I don't know, but more than 90.

Although I'm sure your point is that she's tiny and you really have no idea how much she weighs.
