I have been debating a lot lately if I should go into rez or not in my first year, or if I should live for free with my 23 year old cousin who will be doing his MBA at Ottawa U. I originally planned to live in rez for the experience, but my cousin just bought a house and said I can live there for free. People keep telling me to live in rez to meet people and stuff but I don't feel that the experience will be worth about $8,000 including a meal plan and all, when I could live with my cousin for free. Plus my cousin is 23 and is a lot of fun, its not like I will be living with my parents at home. I will be doing an Engineering degree so I also thought that residence might get in the way of focusing on my program. I mean I want to go out and have fun, but I also need to focus and Engineering is very demanding. I also think living in a house will be more comfortable than having a small room in rez. Wouldn't I too have more friends having a place, that way I can have house parties if I want? I would be interested in hearing what you guys think about this.

Personally I want to live on rez to meet new people. School work will be more difficult to concentrate on but, if you are having trouble with some homework there are a lot more people who could potentially help you out. But, I don't have the option you do to live somewhere for free the first year. It would definitely cut down on some costs if you plan on living with your cousin.

I have just been accepted to stay at residence at Memorial University. They have both dorm style residences and appartment style residences. I chose to apply to the appartment style residences because of the added privacy. The appartments include your own personal bedroom, bathroom that you share with 3 other roomates and a living and kitchen area. The cost of living is fairly good cosidering I will be located on campus and no bus pass will be required. Also I can cook my own food if i wish instead of eating at a cafe, which in my opinion is a bonus. It will also add extra quietness for study time considering that there are no wall mates. This will cut down on noise alot. Im pumped to go away to St.Johns. Im excited to finally be on my own, meet new people, and see what university life is all about.

really there are so many pros and cons about living rez or for free with family..... personally if you have the chance to live on rez for even one year i think it would be worth it... but then again you should save money... i think im going to live with friends and share the cost

if the university is close to ur cousin's house.. i think u shud live wid ur cousin.. i mean why waste soo much money just to live in a small room alone or with someone u wll get to no in the future...
im not sayin not to live in rez.. i myself am debating bout it.. rez is good since u will get to experience university life in a difference view and meet lots of people and maybe even become really close frnds with ur roommate..but then again.. u will be meeting lots of new ppl without having to live in rez
so ya.. if the university is a close distance to ur cousin's home.. live at ur cousin's

Residence is nice because there are always so many people around to hang out with and have fun with. However, if you need to get studying done, rez life can be very distracting so you should lock yourself in the library!

I'd rather stay home with the family so I wouldn't have to worry about little things, and I'd get really homesick without them.

I definitely think that for my first year of University i'll be staying in Residence. You get to meet more pople especially if you're from out of town and the experience is one that will change my life. Not to mention if it's your first time away from home it's easier living close to the campus with other people rather than getting your own apartment..... ease yourself into the transition!

I plan to live in res, and am also going into Engineering. You just have to learn to manage your time so you won't be partying 24/7. Personally, if at this point you can't manage your time, you might have a tough time in university (from what I've heard, time management is key).

I would recommend living in Rez if it your first year - everyone is new too, so it's a new experience for all. It's really awesome to be able to hang out with your friends, and they're right next door! However, if you don't think you'll be able to concentrate with another person living in the same room as you, it is possible to request a single room - that way you can have more privacy, but also can have friends next door!

I think residence is the way to go, you can get more involved in school and it's way easier to meet people.

It's not like you're not going to meet anyone if you live off campus, you will just have to try a little harder....it's an easy decision for me since living in rez would add a whole lot of extra costs on top of tuition, books, etc. I'm definitely living off campus.
