I don't see how skipping class can ever benefit you. Sometimes it might seem like a waste of time, but really, you might as well get your money's worth if not anything else. I'd like to see an example where someone leisurely skips class regularly and has more than B+ average. Of course, there probably are examples, but it's definitely not the case for most people. I get that people need to have a social life too, but it's not hard if you manage your time well. I've seen lots of people do it.

If you're not learning anything in class, why not just use that time to study? Some profs just read slides so what's the difference between going to class and just reading the slides?

I know some people that skipped class, and got drunk and now have dropped out, wasting all that money on nothing.. well on an education they screwed up. But in this case, i agree with one of these posts. When the class is boring, and you already know whats going on in class, why dont u study something during that class.. or do some homework or something useful other than skipping it to sit around and do nothing. Its a waste of time. But if you want to learn something, dont skip.

With no one having any parents around and all this freedom, i would assume it would get pretty rowdy and be nothing like high school parties/ drunkness

Still, I love every minute of it. After university comes a lot more responsibility which means partying has to be cut done. Take advantage of it while you can. When you're 80, are you going to look back and think "Man, I should have worked harder and partied less in university!". Likely not.

It's the studying I will need to remember to do. haha.

Study really hard for exams, most people view the 2 weeks off of classes as party time. Become anti social for a period of time and it will pay off. Use the rest of the semester to party.

Its a waste of time. But if you want to learn something, dont skip. It isn't so much that skipping class leads to flunking out as it is that the people who skip class tend to flunk out. That is, the ones who skip class are also the ones who do not study for exams or complete assignments or whatever. I had a class last year with a terrible prof (well, he just had a very strong accent that I couldn't understand), but his notes were very comprehensive---they read like a book. He was one of two profs for that course, and I only ended up going to two of his twelve lectures. However, I studied a lot for his exam, and I ended up doing well on it even though I had skipped a majority of the classes. I feel that I could do just as well as I am now if I didn't go to class. Why? Because going to class doesn't really do much: I/most people don't add very many notes (not because I am sleeping in class, but because the notes are already pretty complete), and I can't remember any of the details from the lectures other than the surprising little factoids that never get tested anyway. But that is only because the notes are complete; if not, I would have to go to class to add notes. Regardless, I go to class because I feel as if though I am obligated to... and I wouldn't do much other than sit around watching TV or exploring the net if I weren't in class (which I already have plenty of time to do), so I may as well.

The smartest advice I can give you and was ever told is this: Tape Your Notes!!!!!!! I tell all my friends in school this and they always laugh and say yah I just dont have time, or I dont think that really works! I promise you it works! My mom told me when I was in grade nine, severely struggling with french to tape my notes and listen to them whenever im on the computer, going for a run or walk, sitting on the bus, before bed and while you sleep. I listened and taped all my notes, listened to them for about two weeks, didnt look over my notes for more then one hour, still felt I didnt really know my french, wrote my exam and got a 89%. Ever since then I have been taping my notes and listening to them. It takes awhile getting used to but it works. All of the information goes into your subconscious while you sleep or do activities and it really helps. You also have to look over your notes but I promise you will spend so much less time studying your notes and doing other actiivties and just listen to them when you go to bed! If anyone listens to me and tries this, I promise you will keep doing it and tell other people about it. I just bought an mp3 player that has a built in microphone and listen to it as well... there are lots of other ways to as well.

No I dont tape my notes in class... I take notes so I have them and then I read them into my mp3 and listen to them. Its good cause then you have the material to study from as well as having them on your mp3. try it.. it will do wonders!

After 6 years university, here's some essentials. -get enough sleep. If not, you'll end up falling asleep in class and looking like an idiot -go to class. enough said. And yes, some profs are useless and there isn't any point to even going but do it anyway. You need to be seen and be proactive in class for the prof to remember you. And you need your prof to know who you are otherwise when you do need help from them, they will often refuse. -buy a voice recorder for those professors who speak quickly or talk in circles. You'll get more from their lectures if you can listen to it later and take better notes -dont sit in the back of the class. Get up front, be seen by the professor and ask questions -do your assignments, don't slack off because no one will chase after you to make sure you do them.

I really think that the following are 'musts': - sleep! (you need to give your brain some break!) - eat healthy - show up for your class (no skipping!) - be involved in discussions - try (even though it's not always possible) to ask for your prof's help or maybe someone from your class - do assignments (the prof will not chase after you for that... def not like high school) - actually study during your study group meetings. - Don't have a negative ('University is so hard.. I guess I'll fail anyways so why bother trying?!) attitude. Most importantly, do your best. At least you know that you've done as much as you can! Waiting on the world to change. ♥

Sleep is the most important thing. and managing your time. In HS, I always slept during the day after school because I worked better at night. You can't really do this in university....I tried in first semester AND ended up going to all my 830 classes but physically and emotionally, I was in the worst state ever. I look back now thinking how I ended up going to all of my classes at 830 but I practically slept right through them anyway so there was pretty much no point in going. If I'm REALLY tired and I can't get up, I just don't go to class because I know I'll keep dozing off through it. Some people find that class wakes them up though. You have to learn to adapt to studying whenever you have time, not just when you feel like it. and USE the chunks of time between classes well.

Sleep is especially important during exam times. I try for at least 8 hours of sleep during non-exam times (usually ends up being about 7, which isn't too bad), but I need no less than 9 hours during full-on exam periods (e.g. Dec and April finals). During the beginning of the April exam period in my first year, I hated waking up every morning. My main problem is that I sacrificed sleep for studying---I remember studying like 10 hours a day for a week straight and only getting like 6 hours of sleep during that period of time. My problem then was that I kept putting off studying. I would tell myself that there was still plenty of time left, and I didn't start studying until later in the exam period. When I was sitting around doing nothing, I should have been studying. Which brings me to an important point: make a schedule for yourself what you are going to study and when you are going to study it for the exam periods. I know that it takes me a little less than an hour to study an hour of lecture (if I haven't studied the material before, i.e. for a midterm), so I make my schedule accordingly. This way, I can plan to do about 5 hours of studying a day for however many days it will take me to study all the material. At this rate, I actually look forward to the major exam periods. Just two more weeks...
