my mom had to cash the savings fund she had started for me when i was born because of an emergency a couple of years ago.. so now that thats gone, i dont have anything, my mom cant afford to give me any financial support. But ive been working since i was 14 and ive already got my tuition more than covered with scholarships so im feeling alright about it thus far.

=)

even if your parents dont/want/wont support you, it can be done!!! theres plenty of money out there for the taking of whoever is willing to work for it! (ie. bursaries and scholarships, gov. assistance...)

Speaking of paying for school...it's scholarship applying time again for me!

I just did the math and realize I have been given a crap load of money in scholarships that's definitely added up. So moral of that story is apply for everything and it WILL add up. I've won about $35,000 in total, but the largest single scholarship I've won has been $7500.

Mostly University of Alberta and Alberta government scholarships.

Although I did turn down $50,000 at U of C. But I think it's ended up working out to the same (or better) because I don't have to pay for residence here

In my opinion the U of A is more recognized internationally and whatnot. But for engineering I probably would have had equally good opportunities at either school.

Although in my gut I knew I didn't want to go to U of C, I kind of just applied to apply for the scholarship, and when I found out I got the scholarship, oddly enough I was kind of disappointed. Because now I had to choose, when I really didn't want to go there in the first place. Plus at that time they didn't have a varsity rugby team, which was kind of important to me. And I didn't want to leave home. I definitely made the right choice. Plus when I found out about all the entrance scholarships the U of A was going to give me it kind of worked out to the same amounts roughly, because I would have to pay for res if I went to Calgary.

I pay for it all; tuition and books and bills. I buy used editions of all my books online and end up selling them back each year for a profit, which is pretty sweet. Going to school with people who's parents pay for it all and don't work gets old real fast though, not going to lie.

My parents are paying for everything, and im going away to university so that means everything basics plus rez, books, travel, spending money, supplies, food plan, lap top, etc... but I fought to work this year, so I could help, but they just wanted me to concentrate on school, and no my family isnt super loaded or anything, my dads a TTC driver, and no im not spolied lol they just know that this is important, giving me money to go shopping or out with friends isnt important, so I dont get that, I dont even have a cell phone...My parents dont blow their money on things that are not necessary therefore, money for school is not an issue.

what are the logical ways that a student would be able to get $10 000 a year without working during the school months?
My parents would pay half of the 20k/yr fee (Which means I should pay the other 10 g. This year, i've covered the $10 000 through scholarships but i don't know what to do for yr 2 3 or 4.
My parents make a combined income of $150 000.... so that's little to no OSAP at all!
I'm just looking for different avenues of earnings so that I can convince them to let me move away.

How much does one realistically make in a summer job during university? And what other ways can one find to pay the 10k/year?

I'm in the exact same situation, except I have no aid AND no parental help. I personally made over 5000 last summer working a ton, but most of it went to random personal expenses like beer. So i plan on taking out a bank loan...woot.

You should be able to make $10,000 over 4 months, although that works out to 16 weeks at 40 hours per week at $15.63 an hour. But even at $10 an hour you're going to get $6400.

My first 'engineering' job (out of high school) paid $10 an hour. My second one (after first year) paid almost $20

I'm turning down a full ride with $45,000 in cash at the end so that my parents can instead pay $20,000+ a year and I get to take out loans. It's worth it though and I'll try my best to pay them back.

My parents are paying every single penny and won't let me pay for anything. In my culture it's the parents' duty to educate their children.

My parents won't let me contribute more than what I'll make working in the summer (they refuse to let me work during the year), however, because they're paying...I have to run every course I take by them and they're basically going to pick everything for me. Which sucks, but I don't have the means to pay for it myself.
