There are some advantages to having old parents... ones who have paid off the mortgage years ago. Although I kind of feel bad, my dad has paid my tuition and rent for all four years, and he has even given me grocery money when I needed it (e.g. now).

I just hope I can buy my parents a nice old person Caddy a few years down the road. I definitely owe them.

their covering tuition. I gotta cover everything else. If i get into Mcgill that'll be a good 15,000 a year out of my own pocket

sometimes i worry i won't be able to afford university at all.

think about it:

for queen's university:

the costs will be about 18k to 20k for year one alone.

resources:
-2500 scholarship
-1500 bursary
-maybe like 500 QEII scholarship
-perhaps like 2k from work saved up
-maybe 3k from other scholarships

total comes to about 9500-10000. osap loans won't be that generous since my parents are middle-income and for my sister they were like 1200.

so there's about 11 000 there that i'd have, including loans, which would still be about 8k short. where would i be able to get 8k? the only place i can think of (that would be legal lol) would be a bank loan, that would accrue lots of interest and that i'd need a cosigner for.

I'm in over my head. worry

If you end up at queen's next year, remember that you can also apply for the queen's general bursary. The purpose of the award is to help bridge the funding gap that you're experiencing.

There is also the work/study program, and paid positions with AMS services.

Probably the boat ride to Newfoundland. Other than that, nothing. I'm working my ass off during the school year and in the summer I'm going to have two full time jobs. One being the one I'm at now and the other either bartending or waitressing at the bar across the road from where I work at now. The positive thing is I won't need a student loan the first year because I'll have the first year paid off, er... I hope so anyways. Haha.razz

Not everyone is from southern Ontario.

I believe "Cowtown" refers to Calgary, and if you were from Calgary, yes, you'd fly to Waterloo. Or perhaps to Toronto instead, but WestJet actually has a once per day direct flight between Waterloo and Calgary razz

Of course, teapartiesarefun hasn't posted anything since August so it's unlikely you'll get more than that razz

FAQ's:
1. Will I get in? See: electronicinfo.ca for Ontario schools. If you have a couple percent above the marks there and it's not looking at supplementary, the answer is almost certainly yes.
2. Anything else: Google it before asking.

The way the OSAP formula works, having a sister in university/college at the same time as you would greatly increase the funding. When they calculated your sister's loan, they would come up with an expected parental contribution of, say, $10,000. But that $10,000 gets divided amongst ALL children currently in university - so for just your sister it counts as $10,000 in funding available, while for you and your sister it's $5,000 each, which means being able to get $5,000 more in loans.

Of course, perhaps your sister is no longer in school in which case that doesn't help, and you might even get less than she did since when she applied there was one more dependent in the family.

the 1500 i mentioned was from the bursary that they awarded me and they said i'm eligible for up to 2000$ in the work study programme, so that still would leave me a few thousand short. i'll likely be working throughout my studies in university but i'm dreading the high interest bank loans i'm going to have to take out

only 2k? I can make about 4-5k in the 10 weeks from middle of June-August. Can you not work full-time all summer?
Also, think of it this way: after 1st year, you'll have more time to work for the summer. School ends by may, so you have 4 months to work. If you get a decent full-time job, you can easily make 6-7k.
Plenty of people pay for all their school, and while they have debt coming out the majority manage to pay it off without too much trouble. So I wouldn't worry!

I'm in an awkward position. My parents make too much for me to qualify for OSAP, but not enough to send me away to live in residence. Ergo, I have to stay in Toronto.

However, they've been generous enough to offer to pay my tuition . I'm work part time now and I'll be working full time over the summer to pay for books, my laptop, and whatever leftover I make will go towards tuition as well.

My parents are paying for all the tuition and fees. I am planning to work in the summer to cover personal expenses, spending money and to buy books/laptop, stuff like that.

LaVitaeBella, you should probably (hopefully) be able to work full time in the two months before university starts and easily make at least another $2000 (and that is a very conservative estimate). Once in university if you can line up decent summer jobs you could be making anywhere from $6000-$10000

My parents are paying my interest on my loan. They make a lot of money, so I won't get much OSAP. Oh well, I hope with the money I make at Christmas during the summers will be enough to keep my loans to a small level.

I have some money saved up from my part-time job... I will also work full-time in the summer. This should cover my first year costs... if any more costs are needed, then they will pay for the costs themselves.

I also hope to get some scholarships! big grin

I try to avoid OSAP as much as I can... but I know that I will eventually need it. disgust

My tuition is being paid by my deceased grandmother. However it's only enough to cover tuition for the 3 years. I will be responsible for getting a job and paying for textbooks, parking, car insurance, and what not. So it is time for me to get another job. Fun, fun, fun!

Ugh, both my bro and I leave for first year in september, and my older foster sister (she lived with us for seven years) is in school now too. Plus my couin is leaving next year, and we're helping her out too! (she's my dad's goddaughter too, her parents were laid off, and her dad helped my dad out when he was going to school). I also have two younger sisters, so the well may run dry for them....

but i've been really lucky in that my parents said they will contribute most of the money for university. Both of them got NO financial support from their parents, and relied exclusively on summer jobs and scholarships. My dad's parents were much too poor, with the exception of some of his siblings who chipped in some cash so that their baby brother could go to school, and my mom was kicked out of home in grade 13. So I owe it all to them! <3 <3

But I also work part-time over the school year and full time over the summer. I have $3000 in scholarships now (thanks to CMSF), and I'm hoping to double that. Plus money for enterance averages, especially if i got to Acadia. I don't have expensives tastes so when i get there i'll be fine.
