You don't get EI because of a "stupid technicality"? Is that "stupid technicality" the fact that you can't be a post-secondary student and receive EI?

No you can still actually receive EI even if your in post secondary as long as your ready and willing to work on a full time basis... so if an employer calls you and says "hey come work for me full time for almost nothing" I'd have to take it.
But because of my program, which entails more than 20 hours a week... I can't take that full time job and expect to pass my courses. I know this because I have talked extensively with Employment Canada about my situation, and I don't qualify for the 2nd Career program because I have been a temp for years... even tho I worked at the same company for at least 3 of them (stupid jerks didn't hire temps... only 3 out of 100 grrrr) colors (yes a temp, that was the only way to get a job in Barrie, no one accepted you unless you were with a temp agency )
So yea... maybe if I was taking photography or something I'd be able to stay on E.I while in school, but since I'm going for a Bachelors, most my time will have to be on school if I make it past the 1st year.

My rents are trying their hardest to get me by, but with them, my grad present WAS my dress, and now i have to work and save and figure everything out myself.
Theyll get me things if i really need them
They try.
But when it fails, i usually end up paying for it...

Parents are paying zero. I guess they may help me if I am in a desperate situation. I am lucky to have gotten OSAP and some scholarships, which together almost cover first year. My parents are moving me and that is about it.

My parents aren't paying anything, they would rather tithe their money to church instead of helping their son get an education. For my entire life they have tithed more than 10% of all of their earnings to their church and never once thought "could we save some of this money in an RESP to help our son get a university education?".

I realize a lot of people on here might think that kids should pay for their own education but I have always thought that a parent should try to better their kids lives so that they don't have to struggle as much as they did. I know if I had a kid, I would do my best to let my kid be able to enjoy the freedoms I couldn't, such as going to school and not coming out in debt.

I completely agree with this statement.
I think that if your parents are able to pay for your school fees in elementary and high school, then they should be able to help you out a little bit with the biggest fee of all.
And some parents just didn't have the foresight to put money away for their kids, but I think if they didn't, they should try to make it so their children aren't struggling.

Just tell your parents that if they help you out now, youll pay them back by buying them a nice retirement condo when they are older!

Nothing.

OSAP is all I've got.

By the way, I didn't get my OSAP yet.

yeah... not much help from my parents here. They give $25/week... which is basically money for food. I've worked all my life... chores when I was very little... and still chores now. Babysitting once I reached the threshold age of like 12, and then my first real job at 15, which I've had ever since..

Wow..I'm completely shocked to see how few people on here are getting help from their parents to pay for university.

I was always under the impression that most parents (at least partially) help fund their children's university education.

Weird....:s

I didn't get anything for my first two years except my dad co-signed on my student line of credit.

By my second year, I was working 35+ hours per week at my part-time job and almost failing classes.

When I realized what third and fourth year would be like, I asked my dad to help me out and give me enough money each month to cover my basic expenses, and my student line of credit would cover the rest. We agreed on $800/month.

But now, in my last semester of school, $800/month is nowhere near enough, but I feel too guilty to ask for more. Tuition is paid and all that, but my monthly expenses include:

$600 - rent
$150 - interest on my line of credit
$100 - credit cards
$50 - phone, cell phone, Internet, basic cable

Plus groceries and whatnot.

I'm just hoping I can get by until I (maybe) find a job come April.

fortunately my parents felt that my educations came first so im fully funded and they even offered to pay for my masters if i choose to do it, and they are putting my brother through medical school. I know they wont ask for it but my and my brother will probably pay them back over time.

Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

I'm paying what I can, OSAP is paying what they can, and my parents are doing the rest. Once I'm out, my parents are paying off my loan so I'm not earning interest on debt, and I'm going to pay them back (even though they don't want me to). It's pretty awesome.

My parents are going to pay. We don't have a lot of money, though, so I'm trying to help them out with my job savings, scholarships, bursaries, etc.

$0. Depending on how far away I go, I might get a care package once in a while. And as long as I don't go to UVic, I will be well-fed over Christmas.

They'd be willing to let me stay home rent-free, but there are no unis near us, and the only college is Georgian, which I have negative interest in.
