My parents try and help me out all they can, but thankfully I 80% of what I need from OSAP. And I am definitely paying my parents back since I know they will be working till they die (no pensions).

Plus OAS, CPP and guaranteed income supplement and no one has to work beyond 65. Many people are irresponsible with money and cannot save. Some with very low incomes can save if they are frugal.

Yes my parents are bad with money, sad thing is "we" would be millionaires if my parents did not split up when they did (real estate).

You mean they don't even allow you to eat food at home? What kind of parents are they anyway? My parents put in RESPs since i was born but that is all they can afford. i got great scholarships so they really don't need to give me anything. I know they would if I didn't have the funds. i remember when my sister needed money for school my dad bought a boat, fixed it up, sold it and gave her all the profits.
are you dense? haha, yeah my parents lock up my fridge. did you think that was a serious remark? of course it's sarcasm and my sense of humour, wow. i sorry if you can't see past that, but kind of meant i work for myself so that i can pay for my own food, cellular bill, clothes, and basically everything else i consume/own. how about don't judge my parents? sure i mean it would be fun to have parents that paid for everything, but i'd much rather have the freedom to work and manage my own money and not have to justify my purchases and or whine to/ask parents. Quote:It sounds like they use to pay for food but just because the guy got a job they even stopped that. I wonder how they police the fridge? Do they put a lock on it so the guy can only get snack bars from the cupboard?
The whole thing sounds pretty nasty to me. You got to wonder why they even had children? seriously... you are actually the most dense person. not only is that completely NOT WHAT I MEANT, way to misinterpret everything, but how does that even make sense? i'm sorry, did your mother drop you on your head as a child? wow. Quote:im guessing super poor parents that make min, wage, most likely because they are immigrants wow, you guys are even trying to figure out my life? nice try, but wrong-o. why would you want to be completely dependent on your parents even if you were from a wealthy background? useless much?

caitlinnn, while some of their comments were rude and unjustified, you need to calm down.
Noone is saying they don't have independance, it's just kind of a general expectation that parents feed and clothe their children to the best of their ability. I don't know many parents who expect their children to pay for their own food while under the age of 18.
I understood the general message that you were trying to put across, but I don't understand how saying "but anything and everything other than snack bars and the odd meal comes out of my pocket" is supposed to be so clearly sarcastic or humourous.

My mom is paying my tuition, and my car insurance, and I'm also living at home. There are conditions. I must maintain an 80% average, or else I pay my own tuition. My stepdad doesn't contribute anything at all (this sounds so harsh, but he doesn't pay for someone that isn't his child. That's part him, party my mom).
Everything else, books, gas, lunches, any other expenses is on me. Now I also work for my parents Insurance Brokerage, so They are giving me above min wage, and letting me work whenever I can, even if the business is closed.

While it's true that many immigrants have a harder time finding jobs or make less than native-borns, there are also many people that aren't immigrants that don't make a whole lot either. My parents are both immigrants from China and are each making 90k+ a year (though I have all my tuition/book/whatnot costs covered by scholarships, and I still work).

I'm with caitlinnn on this one. When I was living at home as I finished up highschool I was expected to pay for most of my food. I was working at the time, and my parents weren't in the financial situation to put out much for me. It wasn't because they were terrible parents-that couldn't be further from the truth. They were teaching me how to budget so that I could function when I moved out for uni, and I got to contribute to the household which helped take some stress off my parents, who are still in a tough financial situation due to my dads poor health and the cost of his medications. Parents aren't automatically terrible just because they can't financially cover all your costs as you hit 18/start working and have an income.
Once again, until you know the circumstances you shouldn't be so quick to judge them. Being a good parent isn't all about finances, especially not when you're becoming an adult and have your own income. Quote:im guessing super poor parents that make min, wage, most likely because they are immigrants I honestly can't believe how quick you are to jump all over caitlinnn's parents! And the stereotyping...that attitude will get you nowhere in university. You have absolutely NO idea what caitlinnn's circumstances are, and based on a few statements you're ready to condem them as these 'horrible parents that shouldn't have had children', saying that they must be 'poor immigrants'. My parents aren't able to contribute, but I know if I was in a tight spot they'd do everything they can to help. I live in my own apartment, pay all my own bills, and pay all my schooling costs. I work full time during the school year and I work 60 hours per week during the summer. It's given me a great sense of responsibility, and it makes me work harder in school-I work hard for my money and the last thing I want to do is waste it on bad grades!

I'm paying for it all myself. If I were to stay at home my parents would let me stay at home rent-free. They do little things to help out, but as far as money, I'm paying it all with OSAP, savings I have and scholarships. My paretns can't afford to pay for it, plus they see school as being something I should pay for as an "adult" and as it is not mandatory.

so i want to know how many of you are paying for school by your selfs because your parents want to make you work for it, its great, they make you humble and value things, sadly i live in a place where i cant get a job, and luckily my parents can afford uni for me and my bro. lus all that work experience gives you an edge in school.

You're really lucky then. I live in a uber small town. I couldn't find a job until past grade 11 because i didn't have any work experience prior. No one was willing to give me a chance, which pissed me off. Not even Timmies would hire me, how sad is that. Anyways, I finally got a job working for some people I babysit for. After that I picked up a second summer job.
My parents don't want to make me work for it to teach me anything, they simply can not afford to pay for me. I also buy all my own clothes, entertainment, and if i want anything, i pay for it myself. All my parents buy is food and gas. Which is expensive enough.

Haha I can totally relate to that, I grew up just outside of Cayuga...not many places to work when you're young out there. I got a job 'under the table' at 13 working at a restaraunt/truck stop, and then I got hired all the way in Dunnville at McDs, which ended up being great in the sense that I worked my way up quickly and got a lot of hours, but the commute to work was terrible!
