Do you guys have any experience with laptop backpacks (not bags, or totes, or any of that spine-deforming cr*p) for 17" notebooks?
I have to admit I overlooked the portability property of my computer when I got it, and it's dawning on me now that 17" might not have been the brightest idea.

It's not so heavy, in all honesty, but finding a way to lug it around is proving to be a pain. Any advice?

I know what you mean. It isn't only the laptop that's a pain in the arse, but also the power cord, and anything else needed. I used a messanger bag for a while, which killed my back. I did some snooping at www.apple.com/ca at the store, and there are some decent looking ones. My problem is I need room for other things too, and I like to see things before I buy them.

I'm sort of sceptical towards buying cases/bags from apple.com for items that are not of apple descent lol.
Just because a 17" MacBookPro fits into a certain laptop compartment doesn't mean that other 17" laptops will as well. MBP's are very thin (and beautiful! *drool*), and could probably fit into some loose compartments for smaller notebooks. Apple makes sure they fit Macbooks, but that's not a guarantee for other brands.

Plus, there's the obvious "I want to see/touch/try it first".

Agreed. I just meant in general, I was looking on their website. I was reading the customer reviews and stuff to see what people really thought of them. Anyway, I'm really hard a backpacks, so I may buy a hiking backpack, and just get a laptop sleeve.

I just went out to do back to school shopping ^^ Happy about that. I'm gonna try the notebook thing. Its 200 page notebook, should that be enough for one class that runs all year?

its depends how big you write and how much additional information your professor gives you during lecture. 200 pages per class was fine for me tho.

I went to Mountain Equipment Co-op today after reading about the durability of their backpacks on this forum and I am really happy with what I bought.

I have backpack issues. I went to Lincoln Travel Bags and bought a Roots $50 backpack a few months ago and after I put one book in it, the partition cloth inside the backpack ripped. I then went to Bentley's and bought a Nike $50 backpack and their partition cloth was thin too but it seemed as if it would be ok.

Finally, I decided to visit Mountain Equipment Co-op and they have awesome backpacks. I bought a nice backpack that would fit my laptop and about 4-5 thick books if I have to only for $39. Their partition cloth is very thick and their warranty is for a few years. They have good deals.
I would definitely recommend their backpacks.

I got a Obusform back pack. Its fairly large. Water Resistant (which was great because it rained a couple days ago and my papers for OSAP didn't get wet ^^ and its suppose to stop back pain. It even came with a cd that taught you how to use the straps and stuff. its also got a 3 year warranty. Its even recognized by Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Its got all this other stuff written on the enormous tag that flips open xD. Its cheaper than a 5 Star Backpack. (I know this because I returned the 5star bag for this one) I was lucky enough to find it in Zellers. I think its 20 something in price.

If anyone wants to read more about it

I can't find a picture of mine on the web though

As far as bags go, it depends. You can go the whole year without bringing any textbooks or your laptop to school, lots of girls just bring purses or large bags.

I don't have much for school right now...I'm starting my first year, so I'm just going to kind of get a feel for everything first. I have a large bag that I got in Japan that I'm mostly just going to use. I also have a notebook for each class, a handful of pens in a variety of colours, and a case for my laptop, should I choose to bring it.

Hi KeilanS
There is no need to carry all your text books on the first day. You can bring a clipboard or laptop with you to write important instructions in your class and you can get a locker to keep your books in it but according to me just keep your books at home because there is no security of your books in lockers.

I've been told they did by my tour guide when I went to open house. And I thought they ought to, though I'll admit I haven't seen them yet.

I don't like using notebooks because if I don't have enough room I have to get another one and if it's not filled up I dislike wasting pages. When I do, though, I prefer smaller books as my writing is miniscule and I don't tend to use a lot of pages.
Rewriting and condensing your notes is a good idea. When studying, I like to type things up into notepad and then as a I finish a subject, I erase it so it gives me a feel of how much progress I've made.

The lockers are in the Stewart Biology Building (on Docteur-Penfield Ave). I don't know if there are any elsewhere in the university, though. Oh, they're also free. All you have to do is beat out other students at the beginning of the year in putting your lock onto an available locker. So if you want one, I'd go put a lock on one during frosh week... i.e. now. smile

First off, that is illegal unless your professor gives you permission.

Second, are you really going to sit there for an hour and a half and relisten to a lecture? Not even the biggest of keeners would do that. Your time would be better spent studying.

or if someone coughs or sneezes at the most important point of the lecture or something... yeah, that'd be terrible

+1

Yeah I just have a purse that is big enough to shove in a clipboard, a few pens, my laptop and cord and agenda. It has served me well for 3 years. Only twice have I had to crank out the backpack and that was only because of research where I had a gross amount of books to carry around.

Note: my textbooks are generally small or non-existent (online articles) and are not necessary in class. If I do need to catch up on readings on campus they're always available on loan in the library.
