Oh yeah taking notes for a 3 hour lecture would SUCK. I have never had one so I didn't even think of that.

And I'm excited to go school supply shopping. I actually enjoy it so much.

Me too! I love back to school shopping. Unfortunatly, I love it so much that I have piles of brand new crap at home so this year = no shopping for me. worry

An excellent point that my friend brought up is that for long lecture classes it is less tiring to continuously type than it is to write. With this in mind, I plan to take my laptop for one day of the week when I have a three hour lecture and use paper for the rest of the week.

Haha I'm the same way.

Best way is hiding all the excess from previous years under your bed. You can hide it from your parents (if they're financing the spree) or from yourself (denial is the mother of happiness big grin).

On topic though,
I'm going to give myself a week or two to get a feeling of what each of the classes will be like and then I'll get to shopping.
The most probable scenario is just carrying a notebook (the 19th century definition of, not a synonym for laptop) to each of the classes (4 math/sciences, 1 arts) and tearing out the pages and sorting them at home.

I like being well organized, but I know that I'll never stick to an overcomplicated system come October/November. Like this it seems very fail-proof: one notebook in school, five piles at home.

When i went to purchase my books ,the lady at the counter mentioned a recorder that you place on your desk to record lectures. Has anyone used these before, are they worth while and how much do they cost?

Thanks!

First off, that is illegal unless your professor gives you permission.

Second, are you really going to sit there for an hour and a half and relisten to a lecture? Not even the biggest of keeners would do that. Your time would be better spent studying.

i sat and re-listened recordings to lectures all the time, its especially useful when every little seemingly useless anecdote a prof goes on about is "fair game" for the final...most classes will have online notes or audio-visual recordings for those who like to review or the people that dont go to class.

The recording thing sounds like such a smart idea lol I would have done it re listened to it when I had a little more time just to see where I missed in my notes and stuff , I didn't realize it was illegal though?

I used to use it in first and second year when I couldn't keep up with my profs. I had an MP3 player that recorded so it was handy but you can also get a little personal digital recorder. Some of them have background-noise cancelling settings. They're pretty cool, my friend has one.

I don't know if it's actually illegal, but most profs really don't mind. They're talking anyway... so what's the difference, right? If you just ask your prof before lecture starts on the first day of class, chances are they'll let you do it.

Also my friend who has the recorder is like half deaf or something, so he gets special accomodations. If your prof doesn't want you to record the school can force them to let you if you have a disability. Just a little tip-but it only works if you actually have the disability in question.

Thirdly, Why is it illegal? Your already taking notes like someone else mentioned? Where do you get your information?

Don't always blindly listen to Stringer, he tends to think himself infallible.

Anyway it is illegal to record someone without their knowledge, however I believe there are exceptions involving classrooms. I don't know for sure, so your best bet, like someone said, is to just ask the teacher. I know some teachers actually suggest the idea.

One of my friends did this for some of her lectures, and when the exam came she was actually able to quote the teacher. And combining her notes, and the audio files she had, she as able to fill in the blanks, and use the teachers examples word for word, so it's a lot more accurate, and could help you learn better.

To each his own.

It is illegal because you can't record somebody without their knowledge. It is also illegal because you're recording somebody's academic property without permission.

You believe their are exceptions involving classrooms? Instead of saying my information is wrong, why don't you take a look at your own information?

The only exception is when a student has a disability or the professor agrees to it.

If recording a lecture is illegal. Why arent security cameras illegal? Their recording you without your permission and somtimes without your knowledge. Its a legal softspot. Also, its not like your stealing the lecture - you've technically payed for it.

I'm not a lawyer. I can't tell you why a security camera is allowed and why recording somebody without their permission is not.

You paid to listen to the lecture, not to record it. Just because you paid to see a film in a theater doesn't mean you can sit there and videotape it.
