I was looking at my statement of account and found the university's health insurance plan. It's 96 bucks and you can opt out of it if your parent has a similar health plan. It seems as though this is an unnecessary cost. Should I opt out?

If you are covered by another plan, there's no need to be covered by two. It's also quite likely that your parents plan covers more, particularly if the university plan is only $96 (other plans I've seen are twice that.. at $96 it makes me think there are likely some pretty serious limits on coverage)
FAQ's: 1. Will I get in? See: electronicinfo.ca for Ontario schools. If you have a couple percent above the marks there and it's not looking at supplementary, the answer is almost certainly yes. 2. Anything else: Google it before asking.

My family doesn't have a plan so its great for me
York's Health insurance is pretty awesome
The plan offers 80% coverage on prescription drugs and birth control; coverage on items such as physiotherapy, massage, chiropractor, and naturopathy; and up to $450 of coverage for dental work. Many of the plan benefits also support health promotion and illness prevention, such as annual dental cleaning and maintenance medication

$70 for teeth cleanings, $75 for contact lenses, a couple hundred for physiotherapist... sounds like a good deal to me!

yeah, i was reading thru the queen's plan and it sounded pretty good. altogether 100% coverage for dental checkups and fillings up to $1000, covered vaccines and 80% on prescriptions, 100% of accident-caused orthotics, etc. it's close to $200 but I think it's worth it, if you got 2 teeth filled, or had a sports injury, and needed a checkup/meds/physio you'd definitely get your money's worth.

The thing is the limit of $1000. Realistically I'd be more concerned about anything after $1000 than everything up to $1000. I'm pretty sure if you get your teeth smashed out by a hockey puck it would take more than $1000 to make you pretty again ;)

If you don't have a health insurance plan (ie/ didn't go to college/university right after graduating highschool) they are a good deal.

I don't understand something. How does the health insurance work? I've never had Health insurance before.

I've never had Health insurance before. if you get a prescription drugs, your insurance pays for a portion? like 60% +? say you need a really expensive medication for your allergies that cost $100 a month, but with insurance, you would actually pay $0 or very little like $10.

No I mean how do they know you have insurance? Do you give your health care and it says you have it. or do you give them your York card? or do you give them a special card? I don't know how to use it

^ usually there are two ways of doing it. the first is paying the bill for whatever and then submitting it to the insurance company, then they will send you a check for the amount they cover. the other is they already have your insurance info on file and they submit it and you pay the difference.

i have a question concerning the opt-out tho. apparently you have to show proof of having a similar type of insurance, but never specifying where to show it. does anyone know about this, and is there a deadline to this type of thing? i have already opted out. now all i have to do is get my money back (i already have payed my full tuition before doing this)

The link in the post above specifies that information for Western - if you're at a different school you'd need to tell us which one to get specific information. In general you'd need to opt out sometime before the end of September or so.

does this work between provinces? e.g. my mom's ontario health insurance totally covers my costs; i don't want to pay the 800$ for BC's health insurance if i don't have to
