Ottawa gives the most. And the rest are basically on par. Mac has no merit based, but does have decent straight marks-based.

University of Windsor is very generous as well. Not only are the scholarships for marks alone high, they also give out additional scholarships to students in most faculties except for maybe commerce that have high entrance averages. If u live in the windsor area and have a 90%+ average, you can baisically have all tuition covered easily. Not the best school, but imo the best scholarships. ALso lots of scholarships u can apply for

I know a girl who had solid marks and got ten grand to Ottawa, and I hear of people consistantly getting that or more. She wouldn't have gotten that elsewhere.

Ottawa (and I guess windsor) gives way more money per mark range, and will probably negotiate. They're trying to attract a better or bigger croud = more prestige.

Are you looking for marks based scholarships, or highly competitive stuff based on marks + extra curriculars?

For the various marks based automatic entrance scholarships, which school(s) are best will depend on your exact mark. In some cases it will also depend on your program.

Nippising will pay tuition in your first year, renewable at $3000 per year after that, for people with 90%+

Ottawa's grid is as follows:
95.0-100% $4,000
92.0-94.9% $3,000
88.0-91.9% $2,500
84.0-87.9% $2,000
80.0-83.9% $1,000

Carleton tends to be very similar to Ottawa in terms of scholarships.

The other difference to keep track of is if they are renewable, and what grades you need to renew. For example, the highest Ottawa automatic award is worth $16,000 over 4 years; Nippising is worth $4510 to $4975 in your first year, and $3000 per year after that, for a total of $13510 to $13975 over 4 years - at the same time, in both cases, it's very possible to lose that scholarship after first year, as the GPA required are 8.5/10 at Ottawa and 85% at Nippising (which works out to roughly the same thing). With Nippising, you get more in that first year that you KNOW you will get.

if you have a 95 average and above at laurier, you can potentially have up to 18 000 over four years if you maintain your marks. 3k in year one, and potentially 5k in years 2, 3, and 4. maintaining the requisite average, however, is another thing. (i think they want an A average or something)

The University of Alberta has a lot of scholarships you can get just based on marks. I got $16,500 in scholarships based on marks only (I had approximately a 95% average)

So heres some info on the U Windsor scholarships I spoke of earlier:

80 - 83.9% Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $4000 ($500 x 8 terms)
84 - 86.9% Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $6000 ($750 x 8 terms)
87 - 89.9% Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $8000 ($1000 x 8 terms)
90 - 93.9% Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $10000 ($1250 x 8 terms)
94 - 95.9% Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $12000 ($1500 x 8 terms)
96 - 97.9% Dean’s Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $14000 ($1750 x 8 terms)
98 - 100% President’s Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $16,000 ($2000 x 8 terms)
AND
75 - 100% If you plan to live in a University of Windsor-owned residence, you will receive a Renewable Residence
Entrance Award of $4000 ($500 x 8 terms)
AND
If you intend to major in an honours program in Classics, Modern Languages, French, Philosophy, Music, Women’s
Studies, Labour Studies (4-year combined honours program), Physics, Earth Sciences, Computer Science, Economics
(not Business and Economics), Chemistry (not Biochemistry), Mathematics and Statistics, Engineering, Bachelor of Arts
& Science Program, or Environmental Studies, you will also be offered our Outstanding Scholars Award in addition to entrance scholarships:
85 - 89.9% Outstanding Scholars Award of $6000 ($1500 x 4 years)
90 - 94.9% Outstanding Scholars Award of $8000 ($2000 x 4 years)
95 - 100% Outstanding Scholars Award of $10,000 ($2500 x 4 years)
Students in this program will also be mentored in their first year in preparation for guaranteed Outstanding Scholars
Appointments in their Department/School valued at $2000 for each of second, third, fourth years, provided all conditions
are met. Conditions may vary by program

So a student with a 95% avg would get $26k and still be eligable for other scholarshi[s from windsor that require applications (there are quite a few of these too!)

one of my best friends has an average of around 96% and she got $17000 at Carlton

my average is the same and I got $1700 at the University of Manitoba, with an addition $1000 per year for 4 years. doesn't sound like much, but the average year of school costs $6000-$7000, thats tuition, books, and class fees.

I'll point out that the Windsor stuff is all expressed over 4 years, while a lot of the other stuff that has been mentioned is just the one year amount that is renewable. And someone has mentioned that Windsor is particularly unforgiving with renewing scholarships, as it's on a per term basis rather than a per year basis.

This being said, if you're in one of those programs that qualify for the Outstanding Scholars award, Windsor is pretty generous, but there are points on the scale where Ottawa gives out more. And realistically, if you get into the 98% to 100% range there's a very good chance you'd get more from Ottawa (or any other school) from one of their non automatic awards.

e.g. 84% average, Windsor $750x8 = $6000, Ottawa $2000x4 = $8000

95% without outstanding scholar awards - Windsor: $1500x8 = $12000, Ottawa: $4000x4 = $16000

I'm not trying to argue that Ottawa has the best awards ever, just pointing out things you should look out for and how it's nearly impossible to say that one schools awards > another's because there's so many variables.

Compare what you pay for tuition at Manitoba vs. what your friend is paying at Carleton. I'm pretty sure you're paying at least a thousand less per year at U of M, as I recall Manitoba is just behind Newfoundland for tuition costs.

I'm not saying it evens out in this case (on the basis of tuition & fees), but do remember that if your tuition + fees is $4000 and hers is $5000, she needs $1000 in scholarships more than you per year to even it out. And then of course she's going to spend far more than $17,000 in living costs that you won't if you're living at home (which is a different issue, I agree) .
