1 Is it a good idea to get a job during the first year of univ? or just focus on school work?
2 How do you get involved in to research (maybe a research assistant position)? CAn you do this in 1st year ?
3 Is it a good idea to get a summer job or just take summer courses to finish the degree earlier? - so more money from osap?

thank you smile

1. It depends if you can handle both school, work, and maintaining a social life. I could handle a job, but I would rather spend that time socializing because university is a very unique and amazing opportunity that I wouldn't want to waste working.

2. You apply for research positions just like any other job. Network with professors and do well in class to improve your chances of getting these positions. It's possible to get a position after 1st year but it would be difficult.

3. I would just get a summer job and gain experience. Why rush through school?

Well I don't know what you SHOULD do, but I am:

-trying to get a small part time job during school (2 evenings-ish a week?)
-Dunno
-If you are wanting for money, you should definitely just get a summer job instead.

Keep your eyes open for job postings around the department, and try to make sure the profs know you, and maybe. The most common time people get a research assistant type thing is between 3rd and 4th year. Being at a smaller school would help in terms of getting a job like that after 1st year (assuming you aren't going in as someone who won major prizes at regional and/or national science fairs etc).

I didn't work during university, but I played varsity sports last year which was at least 2 hours a day. If I wasn't I definitely would've gotten a job because I like money! And you can usually totally handle the time committment, 1-2 shifts a week is nothing.

Sometimes going your profs office hours to answer questions can lead into you asking him/her about their research. Get to know them.

Working during the summer is usually best so that you can gain experience. Employers aren't looking for just a degree, work experience is VERY important.

I too am looking into getting a job versus not getting a job. I'm going to spend the first month or so of school just getting settled and trying to feel out how the university load is. If I figure I can finish my work by the early evenings, I might as well work. If not, I'll have to continue with loans to avoid working and keep the marks high.

I'm debating about the exact same thing. Right now I work at one movie theatre, when I move and go to university I can if requested be transferred to the theatre there (maintaining my rate of pay which is 25 cents more than adult minimum wage...which isn't much but still! and I get to keep my seniority) So really the only thing I would be keeping would be the 25 more cents an hour. I would also not have to re-apply. I could also get $500.00 in money towards school from Cineplex Entertainment.

At the same time, I would be nervous about getting adjusted to the school work and maintaining my social life. I don't want to be way stressed out, and depending on how the movie theatre runs they may require me to work more than one or two shifts which is all I really want. I don't want to be transferred and then have to quit because I'm too stressed.

Movie theatre's often hire in April (preparing for the summer season) so if I reapplied with my experience and a reference letter from my manager, I really don't see how I could be rejected.

Any advice?

Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success. If you love what you do in life, you will be a success!!

Stay on and if it's too stressful just say that you'll be back in the summer but you can't handle both school and work.

My plan is to try to find a job on campus. A lot of schools offer jobs at campus libraries, offices, etc. to students looking for part-time work. They usually only give you 1-3 shifts per week and the ones I have heard of usually pay over minimum wage. I figure that way you are at least not wasting time (and money) for transportation and if you need time off to study, they will most likely be pretty understanding. If I can't find a job on campus, because the school I will be going to is sort of small, if I really need the money, I will try to find something close by.

This is the choice for meee, especially since I'll be in Carleton and can be sheltered by the Carleton tunnels when I go from place to place big grin.
