how many people would stay in residence if they lived 20 driving minutes away from the school.
I know its great for the experience and everything, but is it really worth spending all that extra money?

If I lived 20 minutes away, I Definitely would not. Look at it this way. You take out a loan on a car, or get your parents to pay for it now, until your done school. And if you only live 20 minutes away, you can make an extra effort to get involved and meet new people (That doesn't cost extra money) and because you only live 20 minutes away, you can make trips to the university when you want to, to hang out with your new friends in their residences/apartments. Plus, if you have a car, a car is something that you will be able to use after university (providing its not a piece of crap) residence only lasts for the four years. And residence is probably way more expensive over the four years if you buy a good used car.

Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success. If you love what you do in life, you will be a success!!

I live about 30 min from my hometown and I'm living in residence, but I don't have a car so it was cheaper for me to just live in residence then to buy a car. Plus for me it was worth it just to get out on my own and meet more people who live in rez as well.

well it all depends on the person really.
I have a friend who lived 20 mins away and chose not to live on res and she said it was a mistake. She said that she really didnt know when a lot of the parties were so she never really got to meet a lot of new people except for in class. I have a friend that lives on res and is going to university in his hometown but he loves it. He says that it gives him a sort of independance. So it all depends on the person and if they have the money. if you do then why not it probably would be a great experience.

Eh, I'll probably be living in rez in my first year for the fact that I'm moving like 11 hours away from home to school. Haha.

I think living on rez is important. It gives you a sense of freedom and independence and it helps you meet new people that you might not meet otherwise. I'm kinda a shy person and i wouldn't meet a lot of people if i didn't live on rez

That's a tough choice. If I lived 20 min away I would probably live in rez because it would be a great experience and I wouldn't regret it. By living in rez, you would meet so many more people and make lots of friends. You would get to experience what it's like to live in rez. Most people get a house for second year with a bunch of people so they won't experience living in rez anymore and those people usually live with people that they have met in their rez area.
Though if you did choose to live at home, you could always make friends in class or join some clubs/sports teams to meet a bunch of people.

Living on rez twenty minutes away from home is a luxury, but if you have the means to afford it, it is a luxury in which you should indulge. If however, you are like 98% of us who would be paying for schools through loans and a couple bursaries disgust , buy a Metropass and commutethumright

Residence is OVER PRICED, the experience is OVER RATED, if you're living that close, you'll be able to hang out with friends you make at school. It's worth it to spend the $5000-$6000 on a car, because at the end of the school year, you'll still have the car, you won't have residence. The experience, yea it's something, but really, if you're living that close, garunteed you're going to be going home alot, your parents will be visiting alot, it's not going to be the FULL experience, and if you're going to spend that kind of money on it, you'll want the full experience. I'm currently in residence, and regret it. If you want to move out, move into a house with random people MUCH cheaper, and soo much nicer.

I disagree.

Residence for me was a great experience. It is overpriced and you can probably live off-campus a bit cheaper - however I made friends instantly in rez, some which I'm confident will last a lifetime!

Residence is truely a crazy, new experience. It is true that you become more independent and the freedome is quite endless, which makes the decisions you make a lot more valuable. Ive heard many stories and seend for myself, people just going to residence and since they had no decision making skills, partied too hard and not caring about the education theyre trying to get. Which lead to them failing out. So really overall residence is a great experience but be weary and dont get caught up partying too hard ahaha. Enjoy!

When I first moved away from home I moved into a shared house, a two minute walk from the university, it lasted 5 months before I was so bored, and I didn't even know people at the university, becuase I spent so much time going back and forth for meals and homework. I moved into res in February, and stayed for three years, I even worked in res, which paid for my room and board for the last 2 years, which was amazingly worth it- I got work experience, and cheap housing!

I'm sort of stuck between whether or not to live on res in first year. I mean, I'd most likely live off-campus, maybe 10-15 minutes away and it's way cheaper. Though, it's easier to make friends in res... so I don't know.

I'm kind of wondering the same sort of thing but a little bit different. Next year I will be going to Ottawa U which is about 6 hours from where I live. I could either live in residence with a cost of about $8000 with meal plan and all, or I could live with my 23 year old cousin, who will be doing an MBA at Ottawa U, for free. That way I would only have to pay for tuition, books, entertainment, and probably some groceries. A lot of my friends are telling me to live on rez for first year, but I don't really feel like that whole experience is worth the $8000.

the way i see it those thousands of dollars could be spent on:

-savings and investments (boring but worth the payoff in the end)
- a car (practical and gives you lots of freedom and ability to get to places without mooching off your roommate)
- About 1 trip to Europe + 1 Trip to Egypt + perhaps even a cruise (fun, and a terrific experience in itself).

I'd move out if it came down to going to a university that really really offers what i want (That a local university would not be able to provide for me) but otherwise i'd use that money for the combination of the three things i wrote. It'd be 1 part maturity, 1 part freedom, and 1 part crazy experience. Which in my opinion is > all the rez parties and keggers combined. Though, when you think about it, you're not necessarily prevented from going to any of those, especially only if you live 20 min away. Anyone can go to oktoberfest (speaking from a personal standpoint here) or to a party or anything else. Sometimes people hold them off campus anyways. And as for meeting new people, having a car will give you accessibility and joining a sport (varsity, intramural, or even just a gym) plus any other clubs or organizations should give you plenty of opportunities to meet people out of class.

Besides, you're sure to meet plenty of interesting people in europe anyways smile

People who are mature and responsible before university choose to save the most money they can and use it wisely.

People who are not mature and responsible before university choose to live in residence their first year. And after that first year when they've become mature and responsible choose to move back home and commute, or move into a shared apartment.

Sorry, I know that's harsh, but I felt like I had to get it off my chest. It's just how I feel.

If you really want the experience of University, you can have it, whether you live 5 minutes from your classes, or if you live 20 minutes from your classes, you just have to make the effort.

Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success. If you love what you do in life, you will be a success!!
