I currently go to a quite prestigious public highschool in Vancouver. However, would going to a school not so prestigious, but getting better marks there impress univerisites? So, what i'm pretty much asking is...if I went to a not so good school, but got better marks there than the school i go to now, would it effect the universities choice? Does what highschool you go to really come into consideration or not really?

I dont think the universities are going to go on which school you go t,i am at a very prestigious international school in the middle east, the only thing that gives me an advantage is that i am in the IB program. If your in a special program or if the curriculum is better then the school may think you are a bit better. I believe BC has the best education in canada if im correct. So maybe it may give you and edge. But in the end its the classes you take the results you get, the activities you do. If you go to a school providing some thing like IB or AP or A levels then your have a better chance of getting in IF YOU DID WELL.

hey im not from BC either but i just go with what i hear, and i will never admit that Alberta is better then Ontario for anything. the Canadians in my school are all from Alberta and im the only person from Ontario and man that gets irritating. and no i would not suggest to change school and do better. Lets be honest, high school isnt as hard as most universities, and if you want to get accepted into a good programme you have to show that you did well. But going to an easier school and doing well is, well quite pathetic, too me it just says you arent willling to work for the best, in which case you could always transfer from a top ivy league school casue you scuk to some crap and lame school in some unknown town and do very well, Or you could work hard and get results. Bottom line don't change schools stick with yours and work hard. One problem stupid ppl make in my school is, they have plans to go into medicine but they start taking classes which are point less. They claim that those classes are the ones they really enjoy. In which case the profession you seek should be reconsidered. What im trying to say is stick to classes in school which challenge you and really teach you. And make sure you know what you really want to do before you pick your classes so you can pick the best ones.

A few universities keep track of how well students from different schools do, and will adjust the marks a bit accordingly. Otherwise, no, it won't matter. Changing your school to try and squeeze out an average that's a percent or two higher won't really make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. I'm not saying there aren't situations where it would make a difference; but..

Alberta has one of the better education systems world wide. Standardized testing baby. No bull about what school you go to. Everybody writes the same test and it's worth 50% of your grade. How can you go wrong with that.

Rofl!! I think we can all agree Sask has the worst education system in the world... (moved from sask to ontario... bye bye 96 average... ) anyways um i don't really know why you're worrying so much about it... if you're in a prestigious school thats raping your average you obviously shouldn't be in the school.. you cant handle it... mid-range entrance university averages sit around an 85 from what i can see of people in my school... (some go as low as 70's some need 90+) getting into university isn't really a problem... also switching schools when u want marks... BAD idea... no friends + assimilating to that school's way of life = decrease in mark theres just too much stuff to worry about.. just stay put and work hard?

Yeah I heard sask is pretty bad. This girl I know who went into engineering didn't learn what a natural log was in her calculus class in sask.
Alberta is fun depending on where you go. You can find dim red necks everywhere (try the US!)

Ontario has the most rigorous cirriculum out of all provinces. Although we don't have standardized testing our courses cover far more material than that of BC and Alberta.
For example, from experiance. I took the BC provincial Chem12 Exam - it was not difficult at all. When I took my real exam in Ontario I scored much lower. The Ontario Grade 12 Chem course covers all material in First Year Chemistry in the United States.
I guess that explains why were always stressed all the time!
Now I'm not to say more knowledge is better - who knows.
But with that in mind, I dont think universities rank you from where you come - everyone has to meet the same admission average right?

Universities don't care what high school you attended. I can say this because i went to a very small rural high school where almost all don't attend post secondary and only two of us are going to university. There are a few others going to college. Yet I received one of the top scholarships from Queens worth 60K.

Alberta does have one of the better systems but i recall reading somewhere that ontario students score the best in science, even compared to other countries, let alone in canada. BC, from my experience, has one of the 'easier' systems in terms of the material they cover compared to the other more populous canadian provinces (ab, on, qc).

Plus, you had a 99 average---i'm pretty sure regardless of the system you're in that just stands out. Not all unis look at the school you're coming from. the only one i know that has a policy of doing this (and only for scholarships and some programs) is UW

Alberta is fun depending on where you go. You can find dim red necks everywhere (try the US!) Minor details like this don't make a huge difference though. The concept of ln is pretty simple if you know logs in general. Here's something a lot worse - my grade 12 physics teacher was teaching the class for the first time (he's a chemistry teacher). There are 5 units to be covered in the book: 1 - Particle Kinematics 2 - Particle Kinetics 3 - Fields and Waves 4 - Light 5 - Relativity and Quantum Mechanics He only finished units 1 and 2... So we completely ignored units 3-5. That's kind of a big deal to me because I'm in engineering now.

That sucks. Although the first 2 units are probably the most important for first year eng.
