OH, it's for sure better than living in an apartment by yourself. It's still an awesome rez experience.

Ughhh, I want it to be Aug 23rd already. Well, I guess not really since I'm not ready to leave my friends behind and be on my own. Plus, ok, not that rez is settled and everything, I'm starting to be freaked about the course load. Like, what if it's too much.,...

Does anyone know how McGill goes about assigning roommates?

Are we notified in advance who the person is? It would be nice to exchange emails prior to meeting

I'm under the impression we only find out that information when we move in. I could be wrong, but for some reason I recall reading or hearing that somewhere. It would be nice to know, however.

yeah i think it's usually movein day that you find out

but apparently you can pester mcgill rez to see what room you get and try to find your roommate on facebook or something with the same room #

Who knows.

Ughh. so not ready for a roommate.
I couldn't have had 1034 of the other rooms I would've been happy with. lmao.

Darn that sucks. So do they actually bother to look at the Roommate survey.

I just envision it being crazy on the two move in days.

So how are you guys getting there? Are your parents driving? Becuase I'm thinking I'll either take the Greyhound or VIA RAIL. Ugh, now I have to settle down and try to make lists of things to bring.

I was thinking about taking the VIA Rail, but I'm pretty sure I have to get a drive up now. VIA rail prohibits you from taking desktop computers and culinary supplies, apparently. I might get a laptop instead, but I haven't decided if it's worth it yet. I'm still not sure if I'd be able to bring up plates, cutlery, and so on, though. Oh well.

They prohibit you from bring cutlery and plates? Why? Where does it say?

Like I said, it's quite possible I'm wrong, but this is where I'm getting it from: "Household goods (electrical appliances, china, clocks, furniture, sewing machines, silverware, etc.)." That was under the prohibited baggage list.

Thinking about it now, having china and silverware and other household goods on that list may not preclude anyone from taking kitchen supplies. I certainly hope that's the case. It would make my life easier.

Speaking from experience (not McGill), definitely find someone who can drive you up to your university. 100x less stressful.

It's not a matter of finding someone who can drive me - my mom is pretty set on driving me up to Montreal. It's just that I'm trying to stop relying on my parents so much. Plus I'll be making a trip to Montreal via VIA RAIL this summer, so hopefully I'll know more about how to pack carefully. The 2 luggage rule kinda sucks, but I'm basically only bringing lots of clothes + toiletries.

also, it says that you can't have electronic appliances and household goods in the checked baggage. But you can have it in your carry-on. It's basically to lessen the chance of damaging stuff when they're throwing around your luggage.

It'll be a huge hassle taking your luggage from the montreal station to mcgill. trust. even with the taxi and stuff. Esp the stupid stairs they have at that station.
Were you gonna go by yourself? Or take via rail with your mom?

Everyone needs help moving, friends or family or whatever.. trying to do it by yourself is just inefficient lol. And it's only first year, you can always transition through the year and you got the rest of your life to be independent too? lol

I'm going by car.
And I think I'll stay in new rez. the initial shock is kinda dissipating.
My parents think the 7-day meal plan would actually be good since it'll be a huge step just being 5-6 hours away. Make the transition easy as possible I guess.
Hopefully my rommate isn't a maniac. Or i'm not too crazy for her :S

Oh and no one checks your luggage at via :S
They wouldn't know if you took cutlery or whatever.. and if you took a few cups dishes, and forks and knives in a case, :S I don't see a problem with that.
I mean you can pack a lunch on the train and have a few forks and knives in there too and they won't say anything

Either way I'll see how it is getting to Montreal by VIA on July 6th so I'll be able to see if I want to repeat it.

Yeah, I got an email from my buddy a while ago. I sent him a bunch of questions yesterday.

I guess you could make a couple trips, but when I moved I had so much crap to take with me, more than I could ever get from the bus station to my rez. Oh well, good luck.

I'd appreciate an answer to this as well, since I'm getting there by plane. I pretty much have to, I'm half a continent away. razz

Anyway, once I get there I'll find a place to live, I hope it doesn't take more than a day or two (grad student). All I will be packing will be clothes, dishes, shoes, school supplies, and my laptop.

That's about it I guess, I'll get a cell phone once I'm there.
