A significant majority of people are going to Guelph. Why is that? Is it just a less selective school?

A significant amount of people? Where'd you notice that? On this forum, from your friends, or where?
Normally, it could just tend to be a trend specific to a certain place, so I don't know about that.

Back on topic, I heard Guelph is opening a new Bachelor of Science Nanoscience Program in September 2008, so that may be some of the anticipation you've noticed. Personally, I wonder how it'll compare to Waterloo's Nanoengineering Program (of course, other than the fact Guelph's is Science, whereas Waterloo's is Engineering). I wonder if anyone's got any idea about it.

Yeah this happened at my school when we were graduating. Not a whole lot of people went AWAY to university (if I remember correctly, 1 to Queen's, 1 to McGill, 2 to Western, 1 to Brock, 1 to Trent, a couple to Waterloo, and about 8-10 to Guelph, out of a class of 210).

PS. I went to a high school that is in very urban Toronto, 80% of those who went to university went to U of T, Ryerson, or York.

i think 2 people from my school are going to guelph... but it seems like those who live close to guelph, especially students coming from the halton hills area, are going there. the trend at my school seems like u of t and ryerson are in the lead... most people are going to ryerson for some sort of business program. a few people are going to waterloo and some are heading to mac... but overall u of t, ryerson and york seem to be the top choices for my graduating class. there are only 2 people going to western and i'm one of them... luckily, the other person going happens to be my best friend since grade 9 smile
so basically i think it has a lot to do with where your high school is located. mine is right by the mississauga/toronto border so that's why so many people are just commuting downtown for school.

For us, (in Calgary), I'm seeing 50% U of C, 3 to U of A, 4 to UBC, 3 to Queens, 7 to U of T, 5 to Waterloo, and a honking 9 of us going to Western (but I think the high count is bc I'm going so I pay attention to who else is going)

Strangly enough, I have heard of ANY McGill. Hmmmm

I live in 'the hicks' - Bruce-Grey counties in Ontario and the vast majority of at least 'the popular kids'(lol) decided to go to Guelph simply because:

-they hear good things
-it's the closest to their homes (yay for not separating from your family at all!) cheers

Guelph is certainly nothing special; that university must (and better) be really good. The city doesn't have that much, although it does try to copy the tri-cities in the area.

Omg, we were having bets on how 60% of our graduating class would go to guelph.
It's more like 30 people, which is still a bit

Friends from other schools have also been saying how so many people are going to Guelph.

Was it always like this or just our year?

i think guelph has completely been under the radar for university for years and now that its beginning to gain a more widely known reputation ppl are thinking what the hell lol. i myself had never even heard of guelph until this year, and when i went there on a school university trip (we were goin to waterlo then guelph) i was pleasently surprised. i had planned on going to Queens or Waterloo for science but when i saw geulphs new science building i fell in love lol. guelph has been rated canadas top comprehensive university for something rediculous like four years now, and it has a wide varitety of programs for undergrads. i myself would never go there for grad school tho, im probably goin to u of t or western for medicine. as far as ppl going this year i heard in a newletter that there was a huge fluctuation in the amount of ppl that applied this year. in general guelph has always been a good school to my knowledge, but it just hasnt fully built a repuatation like that of waterloo or u of t.

as of know guelph is just a smaller school (compared to u of t) that can offer excellent teachers and programs. i can see it becoming a larger known school in a couple of years
