Columbia University is an Ivy League school and thus will be known better overall than UofT in most places.

Internationally (as a rule of thumb), any top ranking US university will immediately outrank a top ranking Canadian university in terms of recognition and reputation.

I'd go to Columbia in a heart beat.. Um Ivy League, New York, amazing reputation.. Hello?! That's instant career right there.

Columbia university has almost ten times the nobel prize winners of U of T. So in terms of sciences (scientists), it's like comparing St. George to George Brown.
