Iiiiiii hate that its a complete crazy blizzard out so many days and the schoools feel it necessary to remain open. HOW DUMB. So many ppl get in accidents and they wouldn't have if places would just close. Ugh.

I can understand that deciding whether or not to close schools because of weather would be tough, but I agree that safety should come first and it's just not worth the risk of accidents.

Yeah... my school board never closes, but all the neighbouring boards do. It's pretty lame.

...They cancelled school here once for rain. Of course my stupid arse didn't listen to the radio that day because it was like 10 degrees out, and aside from there being a bit of ice on the sidewalks it was great out, then I got to my bus stop. 8:15am. Only to find out I had no school and of course this was the same day as my Chemistry final. Bah!

Some days when I question why the heck there is school is when you can't see outside and yet you have classes.

I dont think that universities or colleges even can close for a snow day, because of the people in rez. I have never yet had a snow day, which really does suck when its minus 50 and your car wont start

Im surprised no schools in Ontario had a snowday recently. I know they have been just getting dumped on lately.

The last time I remember having a snowday (Ontario) was some time back in '98. Or there was one half snow day I guess you could call it was around '01- hailing, roads terrible, icy.. then they had parents pick us up ('half') when the power started going out.

We had a student called snow day about two weeks ago: 4 people in chemistry, 5 in history, 2 in calculus, just me in spare. lol

During our first semester diploma exams most of the schools had a snow day
It was on the day of our Social multiple choice and they closed almost all the
schools in my division. except my school. Of course. We never have snowdays.
Even when it's like -50 out.

It all worked out though. I pwned the social final.

Back in elementary school I think we had a week off due to a snow day not sure if it was due to a snow day or not but we still had to go to school to pick up homwork and since I walk to school the sidewalks weren't able to be shoveled so I walked on the streets. The sidewalks had I'd say 4-5 feet of snow. We had a heck of a time climbing those snow piles.

I think that snowdays should not exist once you are in the senior years of your high school. The following would help you get into the groove of being independant and finding your own way (as safely as possible) to get to school, since this is what will be expected of you during your university or college experience. Either this policy should be adopted, or high school teachers should post their notes on a website so that the students don't get too backed up in their lessons when a blizzard like the past one hits the city. Please feel free to criticize my point of view, but don't get me wrong, I am no nerd, I just think that the transition between high school and university should come much more gradually, seeing as I have friends that the differences are much too abrupt.

But Steven, how do you expect senior students to get to school when the school buses are canceled and they live miles from the school? I live in a small rural town in Ontario and many of my fellow students live on farms. The roads are too dangerous to walk on.

I live in the town and can easily get to school but the week before the March Break it was often a few teachers and me at the school. One cannot risk their lives to become independent.

University and colleges have snow days as well. There is no difference in that regard between high school and university.

Employers won't expect you to come in either if weather does not permit.

My school district has had either 7 and a half days off from snow/flooding this year. I've experienced the "Second Snow Day" twice this year. One day we actually had one week where we had 3 days off for storms, sort of. Monday was terrible out and barely anyone went to school, Tuesday was fine, and then Wednesday and Thursday were canceled because of storms. Friday also happened to be a PD day, so 1 day of school all week! Another day we had one and a half days in a row off. They usually do not cancel school at lunch because it's such a big hassle. I can remember maybe 3 days out of my entire school career where school was canceled at lunch.

7 days out of the school year is the most I can remember ever having off for snow days. Some may say that it is a waste of instruction time, but since the tragedy in Bathurst, the district isn't willing to take any risks by sending the buses out when the weather is bad. One can only imagine what may have potentially happened if they had decided not to cancel school on those days.

I've had several "2nd Snowdays." Heck, I've had a SnowWEEK (last year, it was awesome because it was the week that semester 2 was supposed to start). Count of snowdays this year is around 8-9. Last year was about 15.

Last year, the week after exams I had an entire week of snowdays. It took another month and a half before I went to school on a friday, because they were always snowdays. We had a minium of 14 snowdays that year!
