I was reading on the Laurier website that i could have started registering for courses on May 1st because i had received me offer of admission prior to that day. But it is now June and I haven't heard anything from Laurier, not even a recognition that i have accepted my offer. I'm going into the DD program and i was wondering if anyone else has started registering for their classes yet and how you do it?

im not even sure you need to worry.

Usually, DD's have pretty much their entire schedule already laid out for them.

Laurier will not send you acknowledgement that they have received information from OUAC saying you've accepted your offer. You did say that you received your offer before May 1st. Did you accept then? or when did you accept?

For me, I was accepted to Laurier back in January/February. (Originally I wasn't planning on going to Laurier) It wasn't until the campus tour and what not that I decided Laurier was for me. Anywho, Once I was leaning more towards Laurier, I began reading through all the next steps I would have to take, and I did find out that I could begin registering for courses beginning May 1st. So I think the Saturday before this date, I accepted my offer (You can obvoiusly only begin registering if you've accepted) It does take a few days for Laurier to become aware of your acceptance of the offer, and during this time, you wouldn't have been able to access LORIS. Once they are aware, you can access LORIS, to begin registering for courses.

(Your ID is your student number, and your pin is your birthday MM/DD/YY)

Laurier will send you a 2008/2009 registration guide in the mail, upon being notified that you have accepted your offer, but this usually takes up to two weeks.

You can access the registration guide here:

http://www.wlu.ca/documents/30186/1stYr_RegGuide_final.pdf

The registration guide gives you information regarding the courses you HAVE to take, course descriptions, and the times they are being held next year. It also gives you step by step instructions on how to register for courses on LORIS.

You may want to check the following link below prior to going onto LORIS to sign up for courses because this is an up to date course calendar. Some lectures/labs/tutorials etc have had their times changed since the registration guide was printed.

http://info.wlu.ca/~wwwregi/class/FW0809/index.html

Read the registration guide carefully, especially since you are in the DD program, and I'm assuming there will be a lot of courses that are required of you to take!

If you don't feel confident signing up for courses alone, you may want to register in one of the headstart programs

www.wlu.ca/headstart

I attended one last Friday, it wasn't really helpful for me, as I had already registered for my courses, but I thought there would be other stuff going on, and there wasn't much.
But if you want to get your One Card, get help with registration, and take tours of the campus and residences, if you already haven't, then definitely sign up!

Hope this helps!

P.S. start planning out your schedule ASAP, courses do fill up fast, and soon the upper years will be able to choose their courses, and some of them may need to register in first year classes, so hurry up, or you won't get the times you want!

On a rather similiar note, I am also going into the Double Degree program, but from Waterloo. My question is: I completed AP Calculus last year with a 5. How do I go about substituting Calc I with Calc II?

Definitely have no idea about that. Contact Waterloo! That would be my best advice!

When I go onto LORIS to try and register for classes it says i don't 'have a time ticket for the Selected Term' when i try to choose Fall 2008. I was reading the registration guide and it said for DD it is not necessary to register so does that mean i don't get electives at all?

Look at your program outline...

The standard is to have 5 classes at a time (where each class is about 3 hours per week of lecture + possibly labs, tutorials, etc).

That could be 5 full year courses, 10 half year courses, or some combination.

Remember that it often takes just as long to do a search or two on Google to try and find the answer to your question as it takes to type it in a post here, let alone the time waiting for a reply.
If your question is "What mark does it take to get into University X", or "What are the requirements to get into University X", it's on their website and/or electronicinfo.ca (for Ontario schools). Particularly for Ontario schools, those ranges are a pretty good picture of what kind of mark will get you into the program, and if you're more than a couple percent higher it's practically guaranteed unless it requires a supplementary form.

2.5 credits. A one term course is 0.5 credits. A two term course is 1.0 credits. A term is 4 months.

Unless the program has changed really drastically the word "elective" will be a foreign term to you for quite a while lol. First year is totally laid out for you. As far registering goes there is a new system coming in this fall so I don't know anything about it except it involves actually using LORIS and Quest which I haven't had to do. I would recommend emailing someone at the school and asking if you are concerned.

I think it's all the same for DD students, but I'm not 100% sure.

It used to all be the same, but there may be some choice available this year. As I said they have completely changed the registration process for terms starting fall 08, and I am out of the loop because I graduate this term. I would email the school and ask so you don't have to worry about it anymore smile

I would definitely read up on your program. Are they having a headstart session for you? or something different. Maybe they will tell you about everything there.

It says in the registration guide that

"Pre-registration for this program is not necessary in year 1. After an assessment of computer skills made by the University of Waterloo, student will receive a completed year 1 timetable. Computer Science courses will be assigned based on this assessment."

It says...Required Business courses are BU 111 and BU 121, and the required non-business courses from Laurier include:
EC 120, EC 140 and at UW: MA 135, MA 136, MA 137, and MA 138 and either: CS 115, 116 or CS 135, 136 (They will place you in one of the CS groups depending on their assessment of your computer skills)

So yeah, you have no electives! Have fun with that. smile
