hey, has anyone taken a course at athabasca university? I'm planning to take an accounting course this summer and I was wondering if their courses are easy or not? Since you just have to be 16 I think it is to enroll, the courses must be fairly easier compared to courses at a place like queens?? or am I underestimating it?

any other input on athabasca would be great also.

thx

I don't have personal experience, but I do know someone who took a 3rd year CS elective through them (and I've considered it in the past but ultimately didn't). I don't recall him saying anything about the difficulty, so I assume it was neither super easy nor ridiculously hard, but he did think it was a good course and would recommend it to others.

Just because they have few requirements for enrolling does not mean their courses are easy. They are university courses.

OMG it's crazy that you mention Queen's.

I've taken corespondence courses at Athabasca (x1) and Queen's (x2). In my experience Queen's courses are easier because of the instructor support which is available.

My course tutor at Athabasca went on vacation 3 weeks after the course started!!!!!!!!!!!

hm, is it too late to start a correspondence course with queens? how long did it take to complete the course?

I know with athabasca they start courses at the beginning of each month, so if I did it I'd start in july and I'd have 2 months to complete it before univ starts in september again.

I'd be taking this course for a requirement that's needed to apply to ivey, so I just care about my final mark. I'm hoping that it's not one of those courses where no matter how hard you work it's still really hard to get a 90...

You can see the courses available/ dates on here:
http://www.queensu.ca/cds/

I've never gotten a 90 via correspondence but an 80 is possible.

well it seems the course isn't offered at queens anyway according to the list on that website...

..so would you suggest taking a course during the regular school year or online in the summer? my line of thought was that I could take it during the summer and concentrate on just that course and hopefully do better than I otherwise would. I was also wondering, if my mark isn't great is it possible to just not report it and go on as if I didn't even take it??? I was also going under the assumption athabasca would be slightly easier..

Yes, it is possible to not report it. The only thing that you have to lose is the $.

I'm a little confused about these courses.

From what I understand, there's no time line. You can start whenever, and there's no finish date, and you can do it completely at your own pace.

That's not right is it?

Mine said that there was a 1 year time limit. Contact athabasca directly for the most updated information.

so I called athabasca today and they said to get the course transferred to a queen's credit I'd need a note from queen's. I'd have to register tmr becuase of athabascas deadline, and they said I could get a note later but I dont want it to happen that I take the course and for some reason its not transferrable...so did you have any issues with this? do you know if queens has a list of equivalent courses from different universities theyd accept for a transfer credit?

I called queens friday and today, but the lady that knows this stuff took friday off and was sick today they said

I'll likely be taking the econ 110 equiv btw, incase by some chance thats also the one you took...

Yup, you need to get a letter of permission ($15) and have an average of above 65%. Also, they do have a binder of courses which have been previously successfully transfered.
