Anyone received the award or heard anything about this? They say they contact you near the end of the school year, but that's kind of vague =\

Hey schmoey,
I was offered the award last year...and checking through some old emails in my inbox, I got an email about it on June 21st. BUT I do recall getting a letter in the mail a few days before that. So, it'll probably be around the same time this year and it's coming!!
I ended up declining it but it was cool cuz I knew who the alternate recipient was! =P

Good luck!!

Ooh okay.. that's helpful =) Guess I'll continue to wait a few more weeks.. *keeps fingers crossed*.. do you know if they send out notification of rejection or not? Out of curiosity, why did you end up declining?

Yes, all the nominees should get a 'congratulations but sorry' letter in the summer...i forget if it was july or august.
I ended up accepting TD last year, so $15k definitely would've been over my limit ...especially cuz they pay one giant lump sum supposedly. i'm not sure how that works with millennium since theirs is $17k/yr but i guess you can work something out with them if and when you do receive the award.

What is the limit for Premier's Excellence?

I'm pretty sure that if I get Premier's Excellence, I'll be pretty close to (if not over) the 17k/year for Millennium :/

Which therefore makes it more monetarily useful to keep Millennium and reject Premier's, which I'm not sure was your situation... but I really hope that doesn't end up happening.

I don't think they have a limit...or I don't remember one on the contract lol

You can probably ask them to split the money in half or something...people who get the Premier's have a high chance of getting some level of Millennium so it wouldn't be the first time I'm guessing..

Do you know what they look for in the applicants for this award? Does it lean more on extra-curriculars or grades? I have a 97% high school "career" average, which is comparable to some of the winners for 2007, and I've lead and started several clubs, although they are not as major as projects like "building water wells for impoverished children in Peru" or anything like that.

Well, I thought the highlights of my application were my extracurriculars (large variety of organizations and variety of leadership/volunteer/sports positions), and the reference from my principal (he knew me extremely well and was excited to nominate me). I think there's less emphasis on the marks because everyone is so close already (95+ probably). Also, I had a 97% avg when I applied, and being in Vancouver, I'm sure there were people who had 98 or 99% avgs...there are a lot of high schools and bright kids in Vancouver! And, I don't think they read that essay very thoroughly, because honestly, I only decided to apply at 3am the night before it was due and wrote it quickly in less than an hour before I slept! =P
Sounds like you have a solid app lukasm. No I didn't build any Peruvian water wells either so it's all good haha. Good luck to you too!

Well, it's June 24th already and I haven't received anything from them.. starting to look bleak.. bleh. Oh well, wasn't really expecting to get this one anyway.

How about you guys, la2x and lukasm? Hear anything yet?

Btw, did they ever send notification back to you that they received your app? Kinda curious because I never got one.. there was a mix-up in the deadlines and stuff but my counsellor somehow reassured me that it would go through.. :S Anyway, cuz if I was supposed to receive one then I'm just gonna give up all hope now haha.

I got a confirmation email & one of my refereneces told me they called her but that was quite a while back.. i've emailed their office asking if they have given out the first round of awards, but no response so that could possibly mean that they haven't!.. Last year since they gave them out on the 21st, its only 3 days later this year.. so there's still hope razz

Nope, haven't heard anything yet. I'm not sure if this means someone else got it or they haven't sent it yet. I'm hoping for the latter but I was sorta disappointed that there was no site or anything that let people know (I'm usually always busy during calling hours, so maybe I'll try leaving an email, heh).

And your second question, yep, I received a confirmation email back in April.

gill, schmoey, la2x, what do you think your guys' chances are for the award? I have a feeling that marks-wise, I'm at or near the top of the college region, but for extra-curriculars and references, it's up in the air, as categories are really subjective and could be a swing-and-a-miss.

Good luck to you guys though!

I think I have a pretty good chance at getting it, considering the other awards I've received and considering I'm probably in a different, and possibly less competitive region than the rest of you (Fraser Valley), but I have yet to hear anything. I had a confirmation of receipt, but haven't heard anything since. I'm pretty sure its REALLY "late in the school year" by now... so hopefully they just haven't decided yet. We'll find out soon enough.

Good luck to the rest of you!

I don't really know about my own chances. Marks-wise, I have done pretty well, quite a few 99's and 100's. I have quite a few extra-curriculars, both in the school and in the community, however there isn't really anything too special about them, as its mainly just the regular sort of stuff. All in all, I think I have a fighting shot for the award, although I don't think it will be me. I live in Surrey, so not too sure about my college region and people in it.

I am actually surprised with how much I actually got already, as I was only hoping to get enough to cover tuition in my first year.

Darn, I guess I'm definitely out of the run then. darn counsellor *shakes fist*.. he told me about the thing 2 days after the official deadline and said my principal OK'ed the lateness with one of the coordinators. I think I could've had a chance. >.<" *sigh.. oh well. I'm happy with what I have already =)

Mega congratulations, gill =) and good luck to the rest of you, I shall cross my fingers for you.

Out of curiosity, how is each "college region" divided anyway?

College Regions are outlined here: http://www.bcstats.gov.bc.ca/data/pop/maps/crmap.asp

I'm off to go check the mail.

EDIT: Got a parcel in the mail and was really excited... but it wasn't Premier's Excellence. It was from gift from our MP through Millennium. I hope that it just takes longer to send to the FV.

frown Looks like I might just have to decline the Premier's Excellence Award due to the $17,000 max/yr for for National Millenium Excellence Award!

Yea, it really stinks... it's really hard to get around the limit, so I'm hopefully that UBC will let me adjust my MES... but I might not be in as much of a pickle, since I've given up hope on receiving Premier's Excellence. Shoulda found out by now.
