People say this alot, but it makes no sense to me...

You have your 13.3 inch laptop, monitor, and key board.

You're telling me ur gonna wire up a monitor and keyboard and mouse from ur laptop, just for the sake of a slightly bigger screen? It's just as easy to type on a laptop once ur use to it, and if ur sitting rite infront of it, aren't u better just getting a 15.4 inch lappy and skipping out on all the extra monitors and wires and stuff?

I've been debating this :S
I think i will take just a laptop for the first semester and take a monitor after xmas break or something if I really need it.
I think I can get used to it..
but more screen space = more convenient in my opinion.

Yeah many factors:

1) I hate using trackpads so a mouse is much needed (I have a bluetooth one so no wires)
2) With a small laptop the keyboard is compact and the keys are all over the place and missing the numpad (again I have a bluetooth keyboard so no wires)
3) With a small laptop you obviously have a small screen and I really need my screen size thus I just dual screen it with my 21" LCD or my 42" LCD TV and it works wonders

Yup I was thinking 20 inch or 22 inch like the one at home... and a full size keyboard with all that extra stuff. I've been thinking about this way too much.... I think we'll get a laptop for now and see if a monitor is needed. Thanks for the opinions and advice though!

I personally like using two screens at the same time epsecially when i work to have my sources in one screen and my word processor in the other it's really convenient... also my eyes get tired of the laptop in my face... the keyboard and mouse are the cheapest way to mock up a desktop but getting a screen is just for the added convinice of having two, or actually having a real desktop....

Wow I've always wondered if it's possible to hook up a computer to a TV, and now I suppose it is. Is there anything special you have to buy or do to make it happen?

Depends on the TV and computer you have but it's definitely possible. It will look terrible unless it's an HDTV though.

has anyone switched from a windows system to a mac for uni? how is it?

I switched part way through 3rd year when my first laptop was dying. It took a bit to get used to but not that long. I still have Office and really that's the important stuff for school. I have windows installed for the very odd time I need it, so I have the best of both worlds. I love my mac smile

It's not TERRIBLE per say but yeah it looks like another monitor if you have an HDTV, otherwise it's a bit blurry (not if you use it to watch videos tho.. it still looks good)

=O Wow! Does screen size matter? What if the HDTV is huge, will that make the resolution look awful?

Depends on what the resolution of the HDTV is...

Yup, resolution matters alot!
My parents have a 50" Sony LCD Projection TV that is only 720p(1280x720) and the home theatre PC that I setup doesn't look as great as I intended it to look. But w/e, they think it's clear enough and suits their needs.
Anyhow, when I hook up my laptop with DVI->HDMI connection to my 46" Samsung LCD that is 1080P, 1920x1080, it's so clear! Watching HD movies, games, and such are almost as clear as on my 24" monitor.
Generally, big screens look better with high resolution (with the exception of plasmas). My friend's 40" LCD is 720p and it is indeed much clearer than my parents' setup.

Greetings and Salutations!

So, I've decided to get a laptop, but have recently realized that I am very incredibly indecisive, hence I am having major problems deciding on what brand, etc. Any thoughts? Also, if you decide to buy online, how much approx. would shipping be?

Thanks!

I still believe Dell offers their laptops at a reasonable price although quality control may be on the short side but the same could be said for Asus. However, Asus would be the better choice imo. Shipping varies by place as it's free here but it may be $30 somewhere else.
And ya, refer to notebookreviews. Determine your screen size/budget/needs and wants. They should be able to recommend you something that is suitable.

Nothing has ever gone wrong with any Asus I have ever owned, so never been able to test out the quality control and customer response side of things. However, when something goes wrong with Dell...all hell breaks loose.

I think though, because I buy my stuff from Taiwan, it may be different.

sorry i'm new to this site but here's my question on this topic...

i'm thinking of switching from a desktop to a laptop come september!

but from a PC to a MAC

is it worth it when I already have a dell flat screen/keyboard/mouse?

(i also have a toshiba 27" lsd flat screen tv)

if i got a PC laptop would i have to get dell to match what other stuff for home use?

because if went with a MAC i'd have to get all new stuff...

KEEP IN MIND........... there is NOTHING WRONG MY PC!

i just got in december 2006 but i want to get a laptop because my first year of uni without one kinda killed me
