It seems this forum is pretty east-dominated, but I was wondering if anyone has any insight on University of Calgary and University of Alberta. Specifically with regards to engineering what would be a better school. Also which one has better residences and better overall atmosphere?

U of A all the way. I live in Calgary so I can offer some insight. Calgary doesn't have much reputation but U of A is already one of the best and only getting better and better. The rest really comes down to preference. U of C is a bit bigger I think. Calgary is obviously a better town then Edmonton. I don't know.

I live in Calgary too. Well, both are not bad, but U of A is better

Depends what type of Engineering, if you plan on working in the oil and gas industry I would say U of C is your better option.

As an outsider i can say that Alberta has a MUCH better reputation here. It's one of Canada's premier institutions. Is there a reason why U of C is in consideration?

Hmm you guys all seem so heavy on the U of A side, as a Calgarian I have to say that local opinion is that Engineering at U of C is pretty good... I had no idea U of A was even good for Eng. I do know however, that U of C beats U of A for business/commerce, if that's of any interest to you. Plus, coming out of uni and finding a job in Calgary is so much easier than Edmonton; obviously with the boom everybody is hiring.

Edmonton is the most boring place ever. EVER. Well, alright, it's not like Calgary is crazy fun, but........ apparently we have a great bar scene.

All the close minded calgarians think U of C eng. is really great but there is no doubt U of A is better. Most places hiring engineers will look for people out of both U of C and U of A. BUT Calgarys business school is definitely better than Edmonton.

And yes. Calgary does have a very sweet bar scene. It's just kind of expensive.

The UofA Faculty of Engineering supposedly gets more external research funding than any other engineering faculty in Canada.

Totally get what you mean about close-minded Calgarians, I've just been hating the past 2 months talking to random adults because whenever I tell them I'm going to UWO for business they start to threaten me about not going to business at U of C. =S

Weird. My experience has been the absolute opposite. Anytime I tell anyone that i'm going to Queens for Engineering they all think it's just the greatest thing ever.. Even though Queen's really isn't the best engineering school.. Adults just really don't know whats going on.

Ya the general consensus seems to be that UofA is better for engineering and good overall reputation, but locally UofC is highly respected as well. I've also heard that UofA is harder though for engineering. Also can anyone comment on which one has a better overall atmosphere/student life?

I think with my experiences it's less about me going to UWO and more about NOT going to Calgary that really bothers people. It seems a lot of people are adopting attitudes of pushing UC business no matter what.

Congrats on Queens, that's always been my (superficial) dream school =)

I had quite a dilemma choosing between U of C and U of A because I got the Schulich scholarship for U of C. I turned it down to go to the U of A for a variety of reasons. I live in Edmonton, so I would get to live at home. But mostly from what I researched the U of A has a much better reputation, and they have a very strong engineering program. The campus is great, the residences aren't physically great, but the student life there is amazing from what I hear. I think the bar scene is pretty good, I've been to a couple bars in Calgary and they were exactly the same as Edmonton. We have top notch facilities. If nano is something you're interested in, then obviously come here because we have the research lab. All our engineering buildings are brand new and awesome.

Thanks for the info. I also got a better scholarship offer from UofC(not very high though), but it seems UofA would be the way to go. The only thing that concerns me now, is the difficulty; I hear a lot of people don't make it through first-year engineering at UofA.

UofA has a better reputation nationally, but unless you plan on moving outside of Alberta, both schools are good.

First year engineering isn't nearly as hard as people like to make it out to be. Most of the first year engineers are just whiny so therefore like to complain about how hard it is. I have some really dumb friends and they made it through. I honestly found it easier than high school because you have way more free time to get homework and stuff done. I also play rugby for the U of A, so if I can do that while in engineering it can't be that hard!

I'm not sure. I know a few people in it and they really, really like it. This is what their website says:

The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta is the largest nursing faculty in Canada. We have more doctorally-prepared faculty members than any other school in the west. We implemented the first graduate program in Nursing in Alberta in 1975 with our MN program, and in 1991 became the first Canadian nursing faculty to offer a fully-funded PhD program.

We are experiencing a nursing shortage in Alberta, so the U of A is definitely looking to get more undergrads in the program.
