So everyone says that living in rez is a great once-in-a-lifetime experience, but is it really the thing for people like me who aren't into the whole party till you can't remember your name thing? I mean I have nothing against a good party once in a while, I just don't intend to get drunk every night because A: I can't afford it and B: I'll be taking a science degree, so studying will be necessary. I would like to live in rez though because I'd be able to be independent and meet a lot of new people.
I really don't want to miss out on the whole campus experience, but am I too nerdy for rez? Would it be better to live at home and meet people through extracurrs. instead? When I'm older, would it still be worthwhile to try to live on campus somewhere, or is first year really the only time to do it? Is 7-11000$ worth it for a year that I may not even enjoy? Anyone here like me who has lived in rez and cares to share?

I'm a nerd of the highest order but I think I can fit in and have a good time.

Take it. If your a nerd like you say you are it will help you socially. Social skills are necessary for every career.

Yes. Living in close proximity with people will force you to open up. I wasn't a big partier (and I was in science like you are planning) but I loved it so much I'm doing a second year in residence.

Don't miss out on the Rez experience. I am (maybe now its "was"..) shy coming out of highschool. I love my alone time, but I absolutely wanted to live in rez. If its a toss up between Rez and Home, if you have the chance, go to rez just for the oppurtunity to live away from home (which is what I did). If it's between Rez and Off campus, go to rez for the proximity of classes and a residence full of people you can ask for help. I've definitely become more outgoing just because of the close proximity to other people.
Contrary to popular belief, residence (I speak on behalf of UWO specifically), is not a 24/7 party place. On weekends, definitely, but people in university generally are good students and know how to party hard and study harder. Few people drink every single weekend. It's definitly possible to have fun without drinking even when others are (really really amusing), and there are tons of places to study where you won't be disturbed. I agree with the person who said residence is great for building social skills. Honestly, during oweek, you can walk up to anybody, shake hands, and introduce yourself. You may feel awkward, but hey, everyone's doing it. As the year goes on, unless you're shutting yourself in your room whenever you're not in class, you're going to get to know people. People on your floor will become like your family. Rez is great for partying with a lot of people, but also just finding someone to watch a movie with.
If you're still shy about that, join some clubs in rez and around campus. At UWO, each rez has a residence council which does programming throughout the year. The clubs and committees help out with the planning and running of events. If that's not your cup of tea, just go to events. All in all, if your shy, rez is a great place to get some more confidence. There are so many more oppurtunities to get to know people in rez than you would elsewhere!

you def should be in res.
you don't sound dealy nerdy anyway, but either way, res will help you get over shyness, and make up for that quality in terms of meeting people.

If you say that you want to meet new people, then you can't be all that shy. Don't be hesitant and sign up for res =D

I had a 99.33 at mid term. But I go to a very small rural high school so I believe my marks are higher than if I were at a city school. I was lucky enough to get a Chernoff Family award. You would probably say I don't look nerdy but I am. LOL What is your average? See you next year!

See you next year! haha wow i was going to use us as an example to show that averages don't always correspond to labels people use. That backfired. My final average should only be around 95 so not quite 99 like you. but yeah. See you next year!

Where's my 80's-avg peeps at.
I would definitely say go to rez. I would say I am much more social now afterwards, but there WILL be awkward moments to deal with. Not too bad.

At my school, 99% doesn't exist v.v; The highest average in the whole school (of 2000 people) was 95.6%. Maybe that's a tip for future HS students; move to a smaller school XD As a side note, the 95.6% guy is going to UWO for...music. Interesting how he decided to pursue a conventionally unnerdy major (as opposed to the expected med, eng or comm and other sci/math related subjects). UWO 2012

I go to a rural high school as well (probably 500 students max, if that) and there are definately lots of smarties. I only know a handful of people with 99 averages though. wow...99.33 ..very impressive!! I go to one of the biggest schools in the city (over 1400 students, 500 graduates) and its sooo competetive!! Our school weighs some "advanced" level courses over regular, so my adjusted average is 100.6, my raw avg would only be 97% ...thats partially due to not caring about marks anymore after 1st semester haha

The grading program doesn't accept final averages of 100% so even if you manage to get 100% or more with bonus marks, you get bumped down the 99.0%. UWO 2012

YES.
DO IT.
Okay, so I was probably extremely lucky, but I loved my floor. Like LOVED with a passion. We were one. Ladela, the whole deal, we were it. And here's my profile: I'm pretty quiet with the uncanniest ability to say THE most awkward things (yeah, don't even start with me. My awkwardness will AMAZE you.). I don't drink either. I study hard. I'm probably the typical geek. But you know what? My floor respected that. And odds are - people on your floor won't all know one another so KABAM, instant place for bonding new friendships. So that takes care of the much harder process of going out there and putting yourself out there to find friends when you are already shy to begin with. (Yes, I have given this a lot of thought.) Also, your floor is the best place to scavenge study-partners. There are definitely going to be people who take some of the same courses as you.
And about the res life drinking party? I think it's overrated. Yeah, it happens more frequently then, say, at home. But my floor (again, might only be an exception) rarely partied on weeknights, and they were pretty respectable of the whole thing. When they were too loud, we told them. Our don told them. And they listened and apologized profusely. Yeah - don't worry if you think they will get too out of control - that's what a don is for.
If you are really worried though, see if you can score a "themed" floor. I know schools that have "study" floors and "substance -free" floors. Just to suit your needs a little more. But I say, go for res. And it totally works on your independence/university experience.

lol. 'handful of people with 99 averages'---i don't think i've ever met anyone who has a 99 average. i think some guy at the ib school nearby had close to that--a 98---but that was when they adjusted marks for ib. i don't know, it seems really strange to me that all the ib kids i know have over 90 averages in grade twelve even though i shared the same classes with them in younger grades and some of the ones pulling 90 averages were low to mid 80s kids then (i was also in an ib school for a while before i moved and i had a 94 average myself as a pre ib and these kids were around 85. it seems as though everyone's mark in ib was adjusted to meet that 90 average, which i find a bit unfair. not to say ib is easy, but the mark adjustment is really strange for me)
