they ask for more than your parents' income though. i think they also ask how much they have in savings and investments, etc. so if you're giving them money it would still be reported, except under their name.

then again they might view that 4k as different if its under their name than if it was under yours.

PS how many siblings do you have? i thought 80k was the maximum for consideration if you had 3 kids in one family. how big of a family do you have to have for a parental income of 100k?

Yeah, I've never heard of a family with 100K income getting any loans from OSAP. Plus, those savings will get noted as Redrose27 says.

Family of four:
My parents,
Me and my little sister.
I used the osap estimator and it told me I would recieve around 5k (no savings reported),
This is while living at home and my tuition fees are 4,776. (just tuition)
A letter from UofT estimated that I would recieve around 4.8k (after I submitted the UTAPS form)

Who told you these caps?
They seem quite unfair.
Go check out the estimator for yourself if you don't believe me.

The estimator and what you get are often two very different things.

Read what happened to Josh.

That would suck if it happens.
Whoever decides on the OSAP criteria should take into account that by todays standards most people consider a family 'well off' only when they make over 180k a year.

my parents make around 60 k as a gross income (Net is less obviously, but UW used gross for bursaries) but the majority of that money is tied up in mortgage payments since they just bought a new house. I would be living in residence, i have one other sibling in university(who counts as a dependent) and one younger brother in elementary school; have no RESP and no savings. I do, however, have two external scholarships now that total about 18 k (though one gives me 4000 over four years so for one year i'd only be getting about 6 k), so i'm hoping i'm still eligible for OSAP.

When is the deadline for the QEII?

Not a chance in hell. OSAP is very strict. Plus, they will want to see all your parents' income too.

If they only see my parents income (around 100k), I'll end up getting close to a 5000$ loan,
If they see my funds (like 3-4k), I'll only get half of that. (2.5k)

To be safe, I'm going to transfer my funds out and report that I have 0$ in savings.

You do know why it takes 10 weeks to process right? They check over every tiny detail, they contact revenue canada to verified any income you've earned. They will definetely catch the transfer of the cash in your bank account to another account. They will then probably contact you to question you why was the money transferred. In the end it you will probably see a decrease and a delay in your loan.

Careful, they may check your short-term banking history, I know some other organisations do.

Also, how are u getting 5 gs with a 100k parent income, even assumeing you won no scholarships (entrance or otherwise).

... if they're a family of 24 maybe...

I'd say well off is closer to 120K.

Are you talking before or after tax.

My parent's income is about 50-60K and my OSAP estimate is 11,500, keep in mind that I got 5K worth of scholarships. I'm going for engineering BTW.

If your parents earn closer to 50K than 60K you should be okay. But don't get excited about that estimator.

My sister got pulled back by OSAP in the middle of her last year at Lakehead in concurrent ed with a guaranteed French teaching job. There was a real panic. Lakehead was very good to her and she managed to get a bit of money from them and she found a job. There is also a food bank on campus so she used that service. Let me tell you it almost was a real tragedy. She did not even have enough money to get back home. But one of her profs was heading down south and drove her home. Now that she has money she helps out Lakehead when they ask for donations.

Actually I transfer my savings after my school year (end of April, if I have any) to my dad. Since I don't use my dad's income for OSAP, I don't know if they look at him at all. Because I am from a low income family, I don't know how much $3k extra would make, but also in first year I claimed I was getting $0 from family and I ended up getting $4k+$3k+$3k and I still got $11 900 from OSAP.

That estimator sucks. I can't even get past the step about being a student and where i'll be living before and during school. It just like erases my answers when i press next and then i have to fill them in again. Perhaps it's because OSAP is smarter than me and knows I live in Alberta and therefore am not eligible.. haha I was curious if I would get any money though.. I'd assume not.

haha you know what kills me about OSAP? The fact that it's mostly based on your parents income. Last time I checked, it was me going to university and not my parents. OSAP just makes this assumption that parents are going to cover the cost of their kids education. If they choose not to, the kid is screwed since OSAP still thinks they're rich.

Look for the Alberta student loans.

If you want to know how much you would hypothetically get from OSAP (which might be similar to how much you'd get from Alberta, but there are differences in how the provinces run things, so I wouldn't take it to mean much more than expect a full or near full loan vs. a small loan.. ) you'd have to pretend to live in Ontario for the estimator.

Alberta doesn't have an estimator like OSAP does and there is no way I would actually get a loan from the governement.. I tried to pretend to live in ontario but as I said it seems to be smarter than me..

No, but they require about 10 weeks to process your application and then get the required paperwork to the university. Read their site, it's great.

Wasn't there a question about your parents education? There's actually a law that if your parents are educated to a certain level (masters and above i THINK), they are legally forced to (if they have the resources) put you through your education to some level as well. Maybe they only take this into account as the be all and end all for your app. if this criteria is fulfilled?
