Hi, im a new user currently in the 10th grade. I am looking into going into the commerce program in Queen's University. I am just wondering what courses I need to take and what average I need in order to get into this school from current or past students. Any sort of information would be greatly appreciated. If they only look at the grades from grade 12 or if they look at grades in grade 11 as well. Or what the safest average would be in order to be accepted into this school. I want to be prepared as I am still only in the 10th grade. Thanks in advance.

If anyone is kind enough to give me their personal opinions and answers to getting into this school my email is sunnyboy2113@hotmail.com

I will check this thread everyday but an email would be nice as well.

You'll need at least 87% overall and an 80 in English.

You also need 80 in your maths, and solid extracurricular activity.

If you have solid grade 11 marks, it can help you hear back from universities earlier. But it is your grade 12 marks that matter in terms of whether you will ultimately get admitted. Since you are from BC, BC schools care a little bit more about what you did in grade 11 in terms of which courses you take, for example, UBC's requirements.

you should strive to have a low to mid 90's average to be safe. make sure you get REALLY involved. most of your acceptance is based on that. make sure you find a job, try to work through the school year etc etc part time. just do student council, clubs, sports, or whatever. even within the community. i cant stress how important extra curriculuar involvement is.

be proactive and always look for opportunities. the more you have, the better your chances.

Thanks a lot guys, I have a couple of more questions to ask. Earlier, someone replied that i need to have at least 80% in English 12. What happens if it is a little lower? I am just awful in English and just received a 76 in English 10. But I have confidence I will be able to receive 95+ in math and science courses. Would the math and science courses offset the bad English 12 mark?

For extracurricular activities, I am going to volunteer this summer at the SFU Summer camp and get a part-time job in the start of grade 11. I am also volunteering to coach for a younger team in hockey. Are these enough extracurricular activities? I also play on the school volleyball team and play hockey for my town. I am also looking into playing tennis next spring. Are these things sufficient enough or should I have even more? And if i need more what are some good clubs/teams that you would suggest? I think I am sufficient in the sports clubs.

Unfortunately 80% is a stated minimum. I would take night school/whatever it takes to make sure that I have the requisite grades.

They want you to show leadership - run for student council, organize a charity concert, become captain of your sports teams etc.

The idea with ECs is that you not just join activities but show evidence of having taken initiative and leadership. Awards won for community service/involvement etc are helpful.

What do you mean? Could you guys be more specific? I have received many awards but not that shows leadership but on my personal achievement. I received many MVP's, and most improved. Does that count? Or do you have to do activities where you are in charge of everything? What are some good activities that I can show my leadership in? Student council cannot be one because my school does not have one due to the class of leadership doing everything for our school.

For example, instead of just tutoring kids as part of a school club, they'd like someone who started a club to read to elderly patients in the hospital. That shows initiative, thinking outside of the box, the ability to work well with others, etc.

Just to give you an idea, I was admitted to Queen's commerce almost five years ago. My ECs were as follows:

President: History Council X 2 years
Organized rememberance day assemblies
Annexed the debate club and set up in-town debates against other schools.
Food drive/clothing drive
Small things- black history month etc.
I tripled membership and took the food drive/clothing drive from the student council.

President: DECA
Personally raised 2000K + in sponsorship $.
Top 10 in Provincials x 2 years.

Organized a Multicultural Reading Club to read/spend time with sick patients with little family and a low degree of competence in English. It grew to 20 members.

Lots of other small stuff.

Overzealous community sponsors... Ie: Oxford learning centers, Walmart, scholars, wonderland + weekly pizza sales, auctioning off prom dates etc.

How did you end up getting all those opportunities to get those responsibilities/jobs/volunteer? It seems hard to do those things nowadays.
