Fast food and restaurants in general are great for flexible jobs. In particular McDonald's is awesome for picking just the right schedule that you need.

Yah no, depends on the store. My friend works at McDonald's as well and was called in to sub at 2 am while on vacation and yes, she did have the time booked off. They also make her work crazy long hours, last week she worked about 32 hours

Pourquoi?

I think the better general statement would be that places that have a lot of employees are flexible.

question, when people say 32 hours or whatever amount of hours for work, is that including or excluding break and meal times? Since break is paid, i'm assuming including, and meal is unpaid, so excluding. am i right?

Retail. It sucked. I don't recommend it.

I currently am a summer student for an engineering company and it's great. If you're looking for weekend/part time, see if there's an office that is open on weekends/evenings that needs a receptionist or something. You will have lots of free time and a computer to play on.

Which store did you work at for retail? I actually want to work somewhere retail but i don't think they're gonna hire anyone without experience! (other than walmart or something but i wouldn't wanna work there)

My first job was retail as well. It has its ups and downs, and the pay's not too great. If you're in the right environment and with the right people, it can be fun though. I worked at Staples(computer dept).

staples would be aewsome to work at!

I'm currently working as a hostess, and it sucks. i only get like 2 shifts a week, and if there aren't that many customers, u get cut in an hour or two (and they dont even pay u the minimum 3 they're supposed to...). u get tip out, but its very little $, like i made 25 bucks in 2 shifts.... kind of a waste of time so i'm handing out more resumes this weekend, i hope they're still hiring elsewhere... oh, and i find that the waiters are kinda cliquey, never-quite-got-out-of-high-school-types... but that's just my place, i have a friend hwo gets like 5 shifts a week as a hostess, and gets longer hours cuz she works at a popular restaurant.

Oh andi used to work in retail to, its a bit more structured work environment, and depending on where u work, you may be required to sell a quota. my friend worked at tommy before, and she had to sell like a certain amont every shift, and if she didn't, they'd give her a warning, and like they encourage u to be really pushy, and like u have a headset that they constnatly drill u with during ur shift. sucky, eh?

looking back, i actually had fun at my old job though (at laura secord) it was sooo easy. no folding clothing, few terrible customers, done 15 minutes after ht emall closes, and few shifts, but at least they were guaranteed to be 3-5 hours each. If ur working in retail, i would actuallyr ecommend working in a general store, or an easy food store, instead of a clothing store, unless ur gonna be saving more money with the discount lol.

I worked at Smart Set. Keep in mind that I'm from Alberta where it is significantly easier to get a job. Retail wasn't horrible, it just wasn't for me. We were never allowed to talk with our coworkers and we had stupid 4 hour staff meetings every few months to learn how to sell clothes. And while we only got our allotted breaks, if you smoked you pretty much took a break whenever you wanted. The hours were good though, but it drained my soul! Haha. Just kidding. If you like it you like it!

I really hate that smoke-break crap; if they need to keep taking breaks periodically because of their addiction, they really should not be allowed to take an additional longer break. I mean, if I was addicted to alcohal or...the internet, would I be allowed to take breaks all the time? No, only smokers get to go out all the time. Or at least, non-smokers should get voluntary breaks too. I knew a lot of casual smokers who would say that they're heavy smokers to get more breaks. So stupid.

Right now I work at Sephora, but I just started so I can't say much about long term experience/perks/annoyances. So far though, I really really love it!! It's really my environment. Plus, I get a locker with my name on it =D AND SO MUCH FREE STUFF. So how cool is that?

Miss, yeah Sephora has a group quota as well, but we've never fallen short for the times I've been there... We also have the headset, but I love it. You can just ask people questions over the set when you're having problems and that way you can help a customer without leaving them.

McDonald's does not pay employees during their breaks, as they offer meals and food for half price, and most stores pay employees above minimum wage.

I started working in hotels in High School. They usually pay more than minimum wage even for housekeepers, and if you get a good one downtown and are bilingual you can get around 15/hour (at least in Ottawa).

Some hotels hire front desk agents without experience and they get more than housekeepers smile
