What does your high school do as far as events?
buyouts, dances, semi formals, battle of the bands.
Im running for president of my schools student council and i need to think of something new and unique for my school. My school is really bored of our current events and honestly it is really kind of sad how no one participates.

we've had a long running football competition with our rival high school for something like 30 years now and its a HUGE tradition at our school. we have assemblies, 'kidnap' the other school's mascot (or videotape a fight between the mascots) or some other memorabilia, and people paint their faces and wear our school colours as we march to the football game (followed by a dance) at the university stadium. it's a huge thing for our school (even though we usually lose lol) and it's a great gathering point and chance to just have pointless fun. Maybe start some new traditions like that?

redrose, your school sounds so fun, and full of school spirit!

Our general student attitude is, "yeah, our school's a prison and it sucks. We know, don't rub it in.".
Anyways, for activities, we have a labour day/slave day to auction off grads to gr 9-11s/teachers, to offset the cost of prom.
We also have a cornroast buyout in teh fall, which is where u get to buy out of the class before lunch for $5 and u get 2 ears of corn, a can of pop and a bag of chips or something, and there are games set up, music, dance off, stuff like that.
We also have regular smoothie sales and bakesales and we were planning a soupsale for next year's group too. We have a fashion show every year with actual donations from numerous brands/clothing stores and lights and music and everything on stage, and we have teacher-student sport buyouts some years too...
Oh, and we always have a mixer in sepetember for the grade 9s. We encourage all the grade 9s to go to the mixer, which is like a series of games set up, to get people used to the idea of high school and loosen up and get to know each other. Games like suck'nblow (u pass on a piece of paper by sucking and blowing on it from person to person), simon says, kangaroo's court (handing out joke awards like a dumbell to the most built kid in the grade, a microphone to the most vocal, a mirror to the most vain, etc), twister, throwing sponges at teachers, passing on lifesavers toothpick to toothpick, popping balloons between ur tummies, etc.
And then they serve pizza/pop, followed by a dance for all of high school. Considering this is the first and only casual dance of the year, it's usualy pretty big success.

We also have skating buy outs, which are okay, and during earth week, they usually host themed days like print-double-sided day, litterless lunch days, and coffee mornings that are like 25% off if u bring ur own mug.

Oh and yeah, we have the semi-formal in november, and we just planned a charity semi-formal for valentines.

it is a really spirited school. this is not the only highschool i've been to and my last one completely lacked any sort of student enthusiasm and involvement. I've got to say that i'm having a much better time at my new school, even though the workload is harder and my marks have dropped from the other school. people are just so much more engaged here in everything from music to academics to involvement and everything really. People really underestimate the importance of school spirit as a factor of how enriching a school experience can be, particularly in high school.

We have two activity periods a week, which are universal breaks for everybody during which our 80+ clubs organize lots of activities.
We have bake sales just about every day either for fundraising for clubs or to raise money for charities.
Occasional soccer games (or other sports), students against teachers, to raise money for charity.
Crystal Ball, which is similar to Prom, which is another charity event.
Corn roasts, free cake and ice cream day, charity auctions (one for things, one for people), skating events.
Intercollegial Go tournament (organized by the Go club).
Arts Fest. Costume contest for Halloween.
etc. etc.

we have spirit weeks, one at the start of school (the same week we have our dance and the opening football game), one at halloween, one at christmas, and 2 or 3 more throughout the year. the spirit weeks have dress up days i.e. monday pajama day, tues. gender bender day, wed. red and white day, thur. crazy hat/hair day, fri. dress up day. on spirit week we always have an activity at lunch (i.e. cookie decorating, pie eating contest, hulahoop contests, pillow fights)
we are allowed a certain amount of dances they normally go Homecoming, halloween, semiformal, valentines, prom. (prom is special and doesn't count towards the number of dances).
buy outs for special sports events (opening hockey game, opening football, COSA championships)
every wednesday we have a charity drive (your class gets an envelope, you give money, at end of semester class that donated the most gets a pizza party)
we do a lot of charity work, so we often have dress up/down wear your hat to class fridays if you pay two bucks
we had a dance-a-thon two years ago for aids in africa
30 hour famine is always done and is fun
last year we had a guitar hero tournament for brick by brick foundation
coffee houses (people sign up to do a performance (music, acting, etc.) and we treat it like a coffee house)

Not to be rude, BUT I understand that the job market sucks for teachers right now. You don't need to tell me.

My school never did dances, but we had a ton of other stuff. Usually weekly events in the 'rotunda' (the central open space in our school) involving things like 3-legged-races, concerts, competitions, whatever. We have a major volleyball tournament and basketball tournament every year that runs over 3 weekends and has a HUGE opening ceremonies that always sells out. We have an awesome spirit week at the beginning of school with a giant barbeque/carnival outside where we get free food and can dunk the teachers and stuff like that. We have Touch of Class, where we all dress up and there are people with hor'devours (I have no idea how to spell that) that walk around the hallways. Culturefest, which is just what it sounds like, lots of food and performances. It's been a few years since high school it's hard to remember them all. There was usually something every week or twice every week, plus annual major events.

My high school used to have a mini carnival during the spring/summer time =) Lots of water-based activities (in the form of slides or waterguns), and it was so much fun! It was also a great way to cool off when the weather got especially hot.
