Hi I was just thinking back to when I was a first yar student and can remember not wanting to walk into class late, so I wouldn't go in. I regret that now and was wondering what everybody's thoughts on the subject were.

I know some people (guys, really) that are consistently late for the same classes, every single time. That gets VERY annoying, and they get dirty stares.
If you are just randomly late one day, that is no big deal. Also if you have one class right after the other and there is not enough travel time to make it, speak to your professor and they will be understanding, that is the logical thing to do.

If you have a problem with time, get a watch, leave 2 minutes early so you are not obnoxiously entering the class.

I had a prof that was extremely strict about being late but most of them are very good and encouraged students to get a seat if they are late. Some profs also don't even care or notice and just keep going -- it doesn't really matter that much, they will get over it! It just kind of sucks if you have to disrupt and climb over people that are in the middle of class and are trying to pay attention and writing down notes.

I have a story to tell. I am in my sixth year of university, and all my classmates at least have three years of post-secondary education under their belt. In my class a few weeks ago, my prof made the comment that class started at 8:30. He didn't say...you guys should show up on time, but it was insinuated. One of my classmates didn't agree with what the prof had mentioned, so him and I had a little fight. In my class of 25 people, at least a third of the class walked in late every day. And it was not just a few seconds after the teacher had started talking, but it was up to 15 minutes into a 50 minute class. And to make matters worse, the door was at the front of the classroom and anyone late basically disturbed the whole class and the teacher as well. Now, I am not saying that these students should have not come to class, but I do think that they should have made a better effort to come on time. I remember back to my first year and missing a class because I didn't want to walk in late. I missed a lot and it was hard to understand the notes that I missed. It just goes to say that I made a bigger effort to make it to class early from then on.

when you consider what is payed for post secondary education now, i don't think profs should complain. Yes it is annoying, but its their education that they are playing with.

If you are going to be late and know that, no matter what, your entrance is going to disrupt the class, I suggest you dress to impress and razzle-dazzle the audience smile

Most of my profs have been pretty good about it. But I do remember that I did the same thing, I was so worried about what would happen. Alot of times people take seats near the back and it's not too disruptive.

I do not agree with coming to the class late. I understand that every once in a while there will be times when you can not make it to class on time but I think it is awful if you are constantly late. It's disrespectful to the teacher and the class. When someone is having a conversation you do not interupt. It's the same idea. Plus, you wouldn't keep your job very long if you constantly showed up late, so why be late for class. It's preparing you for the workforce.

I don't really have anything else but a story to tell for this one.
And it doesn't really have a whole lot to do with arriving late.

Anyway, my high school doesn't have bells that ring in-between classes, students just watch the clock.
So in my English class one morning, there was this strange guy sleeping in one of the desks, halfway through the class, he woke up and walked out.
Turns out that he had fallen asleep in his class and the teacher had just left him there to wake up in mine!

It's each student's responsibility to look after their own education. Let them come in late as long as they are not disturbing others... and if they do badly in their courses, then it's their fault, and money out of their own pockets.

Sometimes it's unavoidable. All you can do is be considerate and try to minimally disrupt the class.

I think you have to be a little considerate. If you're 5 minutes late, it's acceptable but half an hour for an hour class is too much.

Walking into class late is always fun. Now if you're the class clown--I'm sure you've got something smart up your sleeve to say. I'm usually the quiet kid, the one who politely asks if it's a late slip the teacher wants? Maybe that's why he/she can't help but stare me down.

Last year, my teacher took our class to the University of Guelph. He organized the trip for us, because he had a friend who has high rankings there apparently, plus he attended the university himself. Anyways, it was a great day, we got a thorough tour and each of us got to select a class lecture that we wanted to sit in on and see what it was like. So my friend and I, as well as my teacher went to this history lecture. We showed up right on time and grabbed our seats. The lecture started at 1 pm. The Prof didn't even start speaking until quater after 1. And even after that several students walked in late. I found it kind of ridiculous.

Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success. If you love what you do in life, you will be a success!!

In the end it's up to you, but I think one owes a certain amount of respect to the prof and to the other students. Take responsibility for yourself and your own learning - the best way to do that is to show up to class on time.

I also have to agree that every once in a while is unavoidable, but making a habit of it should be discouraged because its not only your money you wasting but those whos note taking your interupting and of course the profs

Punctuality is very important for success but if something prevents you from getting to calss on time, then just getting to class at all becomes your first priority.

Hey, the way I look at it is, practicing punctuality now will really get you far in the long run. Punctuality is key in everything, that and time management . Coming to class late consistently is a really bad thing to do, and it's really only costing you. So think about that.
