I really want to get into Queen's Commerce or Ivey/Mos at Western. If marks aren't deducted for repeated course, then I would consider retaking it. But only if functions is one of the required courses. I just looked at queen's web site, it says it wants vector/calculus plus one other math. So you have two options. If repeated courses will not hurt you, then I suggest repeating functions, because you have done the course already, it'll be easier for you. If repeated courses doesn't flow with western or queens, then I suggest taking data management and focus on it. Forget about Functions. Talk to your guidance counselor first before making a final decision. http://www.queensu.ca/admission/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=287&Itemid=78#averages MATH, I CHOOSE YOU!!!I'm at Waterloo, doing Computer Science

Grade 11 over here! New to the forums as well, just found this today, quite useful. ACTH, I'm curious to know what courses you took in grade 12? And what was your average. And what do u plan on doing after that program, med school? Im interested in biomed as well or health sciences at mcmaster and then med school, if i can even make it.

I took: -Bio (94%) -Chem (93%) -Challenge/Change in Society (Psych course) (94%) -Religion (Catholic School, it was my hardest course, don't be fooled) (89%) -Functions (90%) -English (95%) Which adds up to a 92.5 average. Had I done my homework and put in more effort (and not slacked off after I accepted my offer to UWO), I'm sure my average would've been over 95%. To get into the biomed program, you need an 85%+ at least. I'm not sure about the cut-off because the three people going from my school all had 90+ averages. For some reason, the two smartest kids (and then me for some reason lol) wanted to go to UWO Biomed. I'm planning on med school, research, or a PhD. We'll see how well I do before I make any decisions, getting into medical school is a nightmare. Biomed seems like an amazing program, with a lot of options. At uwo, you can either get a degree from the medical school (BMSc Degree), the science stream (Bsc), or even a double degree from the top-notch business school on campus (HBA+BMSc or BSc). You can also apply to law school, dental, or medical school, should you change your mind. If you have any questions, feel free to ask

Wow:|. That's amazing. I've been researching this stuff alot this summer cus i want to have my courses all laid out for this year and next so im not stressing later about what i want to take in uni. Is it still possible to get into med school with out taking a science program. Say if i took engineering, would i still have a chance?I ask because i know if i dont get into med school i wouldnt be happy with any of the degrees i would get. This way if i took engineering i have that as my back up.

You can get into med school with a music degree if you wanted. As long as you have the prerequisite courses, you can do any degree you want. The prerequisites are different for each school so you might want to look those up.
I'm currently in engineering and planning on applying to medical school. If you can get the required marks (not easy, I'm still working on it), an engineering degree could really set you apart from other applicants.

After you get the grades, the Mcat score and you FINALLY go for the interview... unique degrees will really set you apart. During the interview, they dont look for who is smarter (becasue thats already been done), they look for who is more unique, more active, more fit to be a doctor. A friend of mine actaully went to a interview, and they asked him questions like " what was the saddest time of your life, what was the best time of your life"... if you can stand out from the crowd (ie have a music degree) it will definately help you out!

The don on my floor at Chestnut was a first year medical student at U of T and he said he knew students in the program who were concert level pianists or Olympic athletes.
While it may be too late to master the piano or become an amazing athlete, there are other things you can do to set yourself apart.

Being in the same program as UofT2011, I can say that I like it. If you're thinking about medical, I would advise ECE over civil as you get more freedom with your classes during your upper years. It makes it easier to finish all of the prerequisite courses you need for some of the more picky medical schools. One option if you want to do civil is to take the prerequisites during the summer. You can check out the curriculum at: http://www.undergrad.engineering.utoronto.ca/information/calendar/0809.htm

Engineering itself is an amazing program, and if you have a edge for mathematical thinking or working effeciently, then its for you. I hated the fall term, but then i realized its not the courses that were horrible, it was me. The courses can be so interesting if you are willing to learn and put the extra effort in. As for the difficulty, i am honestly starting to belive that if you put the effort in, the courses are as basic as it can get. A friend of mine is in Civil, and he hated it. BUT, i knew 10 other people in civil who absolutely loved the program- so its really up to the person. I would recommend that you take 'Track one' if you are unsure as to what you want to get into. 'Track one' will basically let you choose a engineering departnment AFTER first year.

hi guys. i have a question. when universities give out acceptances, do they look at the courses that you hve completed before giving you the conditional acceptance? the reason i ask this is because i have advanced functions second semester (as mentioned earlier, i have already completed data management). I know that my friend didn't receive an acceptance to laurier until they saw her advanced functions mark (laurier-she called in to confirm this). The school's i am interested in are schulich, queen's, western, guelph marketing (backup). thank you! also: when school's such as schulich, queen's, and western ask for references on our supplementary application, do they actually call the references (just out of curiousity)? thanks!

I think they generally go with the midterm mark for second semester courses, but I could be wrong. As for the references question, I don't see why they would ask you to supply them if they didn't call at least a few. Bottom line: don't put down bad/mediocre references hoping that they won't call.
