I've been lurking for a year now! I'll be in Gr.12 in september. Best of luck to all of us, I'm sure we'll get to know each other in rest of the year.

Here's my schedule for next year:

English
Math(functions)
Math(calculus)
Math(data management)
Physics
Accounting
Music (Strings!! woohoo!!)

The only class I'm looking forward to is music, my head kind of aches whenever I think about the fact that I took 3 maths. I'm also from a term school, which means I'll have 8 exams (music has two exams) in december and in june.... frown *pukes*

~That sucks! A lot!! I could never stand math but I found that once I accepted the fact that I had to take it, it almost grew on me (forcing me to take it all the way through HS). Your schedule does look tough though! Do you know what you want to do/ where you want to go next year? My friend (who is attending UWO for her Honours BA in Life Sciences) wants to become a peidiatrician (may be spelled wrong~lol) had a tough schedule like that as well in gr. 12 (only in semesters). She had Physics, Biology, Calculus and Chem. one semester and the other she had Functions and Relations, English, Data management and I believe gym. So ya, very heavy workload!

~I'm definately with you on the music topic! I love music as well even though theory is a HUGE pain in the butt! I play The alto Saxophone (along with Barri. sax) The clairinet, piano, guitar and as of this year some french horn. I did the french horn for half of the course this past year because we had an alternate instrument unit where we had to play an instrument that was completely foreign to us. So, for me this was the french horn. Piece of advice---> Hardest instrument ever! Seriously... lol

~ Good luck with that schedule full of fun math etc.... and also good luck with your future post secondary or w/e you plan to pursue

Your friend's Gr.12 schedule looks terrifying. I'm actually not that good at jugling all my courses. I originally only wanted to take only 6 courses, but my teacher, friends and family all said that in my case, I should take a full 8 course schedule. I finally decided to add one more course (accounting) to my schedule, which I am not looking forward to, because I don't really enjoy it.

Music is always an interesting class. Once I get pass the theory stuff, it is actually my favourite class. My school specifically have most of the music classes in the afternoon. I always look forward to that class to relax from all the classes in the morning (our school has a 6 course per day schedule, 3 in the morning, and 3 in the afternoon). I'm always jealous at you band kids, since you guys always seem to switch instruments. I'm in the strings program, so we usually only stay with our instrument. I know what you mean with the French horn, a good friend of mine plays that instrument. It's hard to make a decent sound and when you're a part of a full orchestra, it's hard for the french horns to stand out!

It definately is very hard! (the French Horn that is). One piece of advide though... dont regret taking all of those courses whether u like them or not they will definately all pay off in the future. Also, don't be jealous of other schools it sounds like your music program is great we don't even have any string section (or I didn't I suppose I should be saying). What instrument do you play??

Hey..

At your schools, are there a lack of "arts" University level courses? The vast majority of ours are maths and sciences, and so I had a very difficult time getting the required minimum 12U courses.

A lot of ours are 'M' level courses- mixed, as in college and university students.

There is nothing wrong with M courses. They will get you into many university programs.

I took accounting on a wimp. My dad was the one that kind of pressured me into taking it, but I didn't mind. I plan to go through the course with the mind set of learning something more at the end. You're right in that all the courses (except for careers studies, that's a waste of time) will pay off at the end. It's good to know a little bit of accounting in the future because it'll probably make things like filing income tax less of a nightmare. smile

And you're right. Our school is a very music-oriented school, we're 3/4 way to becoming an arts school (we can hand out fine arts certifications). We have a vocal, winds, and strings program, and we have 3 classes in each program.
I play the violin and cello. I also play the double bass (when the teachers are not looking).
big grin

It's usually hard for schools to have a strings program, I live in toronto, which has (I think) 92 high schools, and only about 10-15 of them offer a strings program. There is a lower interest in strings, and it costs a heck lot more in maintenance, not to mention the instruments itself. I've seen schools that has one arts teacher, teaching one class which consists of grade9s-12s.

If you're talking about ontario, then you're out of luck. All arts courses are M leveled. There are also some open leveled courses, universities don't care about O courses.
I'm guessing the reason is that arts is widely available in both college and universities. Most (but some do_ university arts program do not require you to have any of the gr.12 arts courses. For example, a lot of performance arts programs do not require AM V/S/I 4M, but rather an audio/tape and stuff from RCM. This is probably the reason why there aren't any U leveled arts courses. I could be wrong, so take this with a grain of salt.

Unless otherwise stated by the program you're interested in, you are allowed two 4M courses into your minimal 6 grade 12 courses, so the arts courses are not out of the question.

I'm glad to see so many 'artsy/I-can't-stand-math-and-science' people here because I definitely belong to that club! smile

I am just super excited for University NOW...so a long year of working my butt off trying to scrounge up money to pay for university and then studying endlessly seems like a bit of a yawn...especially since I am probably one of the only ones in my group of buds who is serious about this at all! Anyone else have those lovable slacker friends who show no initiative at all and then are super pissed when you a) get better grades then them and b) can't hang out the night before your big math exam (even if they swear they'll study with you...)?

Anywho...I just went to tour the University of Guelph on Wednesday, which made me so happy! I've kind of had my heart set on Guelph since the ninth grade, though right now it's pretty much tied with Queen's and Toronto. What university/program do you have your heart set on? Why? What do you plan to do to get there?

Hm...and that's about it for now for my random babblings and questions....

Yeah, fortunately I am allowed M level courses, but I like university level courses better (more fun, somehow, and a higher percentage of interesting people), and just wish that there were a few more arts-geared courses at that level. At my school, there's a marked difference between the different "levels"...

Ahh well... hakuna matata, right? Nothing I can do about it!

Im a little confused right now; I just took MHF4U1 in summer school an finished with an 86. I dropped 5% after my exam. Is it worth retkaing the course and trying to get a 90? I really want to get into Queen's Commerce or Ivey/Mos at Western.
