Not worth it. Unless you have a strong passion for piano or plan on studying music, forget it. ARCT isn't going to get you anywhere.

i know people who got ARCT in HS, so I don't see how you can't in university. however, i agree with ederoo. ARCT won't help you much unless you want to teach piano,

I'd complete it next summer or so. You can work on it during the year, but it can't be your top-priority. University of Western Ontario '13 - Biomedical Sciences How Purple Are YOU?Med-Syd 09/10 ~ London Hall 10/11 A song to listen to~

I want to get my Teacher's ARCT. I just finished my grade 10 so it would take quite a while with the theory I have to do too. Perfectly possible, but I'd recommend focusing on uni during the school year than signing up for the summer exams and studying hard over the 4-month break.

^ I'm sure you might find a close friend/neighbour/relative who wouldn't mind paying you a bit to teach his/her 5-year-old daughter the basics. But if you want to teach anything more than that, or be paid well, expect people to ask you for your credentials.

LOL if you want to be a legit piano teacher making the $40-50/hour, ur gonna need more than just an ARCT.
I'd stick to teaching the kid down the street for $12-15 an hour if I were you.

I would definitely want to be paid more. I think, for what I do and the effort I put in, it's pretty sht what I'm getting paid. People have taken advantage of me and I can't believe that I let them. I used to only charge 8 dollars an hour which is less than minimum wage, plus I gave free lessons. They were not even good clients - what ungrateful bltches. And I work for a company too and when things average out at the end of the day, I get paid only 5 dollars an hour because the company robs 50% of my earnings and this does not even include TTC ticket costs. Don't worry, I quit. So this is kinda why I want my credentials and be able to charge people more. But it's so much goddamn work and money. And what if I fail? I'm leaning towards the NO side. But then why am I slaving over trying to finish my grade 10 requirements? It would have been all for nothing. Kinda mixed feelings here.

And just to add, if I dont do ARCT, then finishing grade 10 requirements would be for nothing. Finishing grade 9 would have been for nothing. Wasted time, money and effort. Oh sht. FML.

Whatever happened to, "Piano is my passion!" and all the heartwarming fluff that people use to justify the time and effort they put into such endeavours? I think it's probably a good thing that you're leaning towards quitting. Personally, I would want to hire a piano teacher who is passionate about what s/he does and can carry that into his/her teaching. I might be presumptuous here, but you really come across as someone who's in it mostly for the money.

Omfg don't do it. I wish someone had told me 2 years ago that ARCT requires so much time and commitment. It's nothing like Gr 10 piano. I'm actually in it for the credentials too lol.. I wish I could stop right now but I already finished all my theory requirements. T_T FFFFFFFF
I don't know where you're from but in Vancouver, it's not likely that those Asian parents would get you to teach their beloved prodigy piano. $12 for ARCT or $50+ for someone who got a degree in music. They'd rather choose someone with more experience and qualifications.

I still think doing grade 10 piano is such a waste if you're not going to do ARCT. I mean all that effort and money. What's the point? My family is low income and to waste all that money just really hurts. I should have quit way back when I finished grade 8 for the credit. I feel so bad.

Yeah, what a waste of money learning music, when you could be taking MATH LESSONS instead!

Yeah, what a waste of money to learn an instrument if you don't get some little certificate at the end.

I can't even play octaves properly. O_O I think we're on the same boat.. I feel bad for wasting all this money.. It's like I HAVE to pass this exam or else I will have dishonoured my family D= Bring shame to the family. I think you should at least finish your corequisites. At least then you'll get your Gr 10 piano cert and can say that you successfully finished it. I know a lot of people who only finished Gr 10 and didn't even consider ARCT.

Mermaid, I know exactly how you feel as I went through the same thing myself. All I have to show for years of piano is a f*cking certificates. On the bright side, I did win a couple competitions and earned me some cash money $$ I'd say the only worthwhile thing I've done with my piano skills is teach underprivileged kids how to play. You mentioned earlier that you taught for free or a very low wage, I hope you were teaching kids whose families can't afford lessons and not the b!tch's daughter who lives down the street. If you're gonna teach for that low of a wage, might as well work for mcd's. In retrospect, I would've much rather my parents NOT have put me in piano since I was a kid. Think about all the money they could've saved from lessons, gas driving you, theory lessons, books, exam fees, competition fees, etc. It probably adds up to well over $20,000. I'd rather have a car waiting for me the second I turned 16. Oh, and all the torture and time spent everyday practicing. Oh god how my piano teacher used to make me cry as a kid. Anyway, as far as your resume goes, I'd say piano doesn't add THAT much other than for scholarship applications. And yeah, if you want to become a REAL teacher registered with the RCM I think you'd need a degree (Ph.D preferably) in music. All an ARCT says is that you're technically qualified to be a concert pianist so you can have your own concerts and sh!t.
