Consider a CO-OP option if it's offered for your program - not only will it make you more comfortable with the subject manner that you're learning, but it's also a great way to pay off student loans if you continue for the 4-5 year program. Heck, you might even get a life-long career out of it if you work hard enough. While I was touring Waterloo, the tour guide mentioned her roommate was offered a job at Google because of the work terms he put in with them, how awesome is that?

My parents think working while in school will help me to pay of any loans that I need to. But I worry that it will take away from the time that I put into my studies, so for those who are working, does it affect your school work??

you just have to find the job that works for you. and make sure you make that clear at the beginning because it could be complicated. like, if you want regular hours, try to find that job, don't settle. it gets to be stressful.

yeah, i have had a job ever since entering university. always part time somewhere. but usually i keep regular shifts so i can plan my schedule around it. so i work twice a week, whereas last year when i worked shift work, i told them i'd only work sundays and then i knew i'd have to get my homework and studying done before then. its not hard, just take a little at a time. the guy with the 3 jobs is crazy.

everyone should work while in school! even if it just on the weekends - thats what i do i work fridays and saturdays. That way it does not cut into school work and i can still hangout with friends, its winwin. Of course with a job you need to balance out you income, its hard putting most of it away and not spend it on yourself but you have to think future plans!!!
anyone gonna get a full time job in the summer? Or keep your parttime job and enjoy your summer?!

I had a job as a seasonal but it was so hard because neither me or my mom drives so i was dependnt on the bus, which is anther pain cuz it may not run as late as u need it. Plus, if u get a job outsode of school they dont care if u have school stuff, maybe exams but nothing else. so i ended up leaving because i found it annoying that they wouldnt accomadate to what times i could actually work. So really it's alwayz best to find work on campus or get somewhere close to school or where ever u live because thats wen it can effect schooling.

Having a part time job while in school is a good idea. Yes, when you finish school you will only have to balance work and a social life, but if we can manage school, work, and a social life, then were all set. As well, not everyone has parents that can pay for even a bit of their schooling. I'm fortunate to have divorced parents willing to each give me some money each year, but the majority of the costs will be covered by my hard earned cash as I had no savings fund till I got a job two years ago.
I think that if you can find a job that will not overwhelm you, and have an understanding boss, you should be able to have a pretty good job / school experience.

Working and studying is probably the best. That way you can continue your education and get some work experience at the same time. You can learn a few things and pay for your classes, and who knows... you might meet some people.

But for me the thing is I'm so involved in extracurricular things such as sports, drama, music, etc. I wouldn't have time for a job even if I wanted one. I think it's important especially in highschool to use your time to develop the talents that God has given you and worry about money later. I'll be working this summer and applying for scholarships to hopefully pay for my future schooling. While I was in high school I did a bunch of extracurricular drama things too but I had a part time job as well. I felt it was important for me to have a job, yet a lot of the time I was so overwhelmed with drama and my other classes that work just wasn't a priority. For most of my grade 12 year I only worked one day a week which worked out fine for me. I was making a small amount of my own spending money plus I was doing well in all my classes. There's always time to work, why ruin your high school years having stress related break downs if you don't have to? I took a year off after high school to work and it has made such a difference. I have money in the bank and my stress level is at a manageable level.

I, myself, have a part-time job while attending school. But my manager gave me a good shift, where I am able to make money, finish my homework during the weekend or go out with my friends. My shifts starts at 6am to 11am, and I work Saturdays and Sundays and I make $9.35 an hour. Although I can relate that sometimes it does get in the way of my studies, I try my best not to let it get to me and so far I am doing well. My parents are paying for my education, but I decided that I should experience an adult work environment and gain experience for the future when I apply for jobs that will help me reach my career goals. On the other hand, I am also working so I don't always have to ask my mom for the money and to see that she's not spending any of it on herself, which I feel so guilty for. Therefore, now since I am making my own pocket money, and relying on my own hands to try to get as much as I can with scholarships and at work to pay my post-secondary finances so that my mom can have the joy of spending her hard earned money.

Perfect summary right there No one's going to be forcing you to work, but then again you can't simply be waiting hand-and-foot on members of your family for money. Afterall, no one said you have to do 80+ hours a week. Carleton University Class of 2012, Honours Bachelor of Arts

I really don't see how its realistic when some people's parents pay their entire way through school, how are they going to get by once they move into the working world?? Also I really wonder what these people put on their resumes when they apply for their first jobs after college or university haha Not saying that it makes them any less qualified and its not their fault that there more priveledged than most, its just going to be quite the culture shock once things start to change !

Something that I've always believed, and that's always been true for me, is that if you add things to your plate of things to do, then it is more likely that you will force yourself to manage your time efficiently - unless your plate is just utterly ridiculous full! but working part time while you are in school is not a huge load to put on top of things, it can even actually save you time in some respects by allowing you money to do other things more efficiently (ie, buying groceries all at once and maybe at a closer, but bit more expensive store). Even if you're working 12 hours a week, you are still gaining experience and knowledge of the working force and learning things that cant be taught in a classroom.
Again, even if it feels like you have no time, you will find the time if it is necessary.

I go to Douglas Full-Time on the West Coast, 3rd year Kinesiology, and have worked my entire college career. Best thing I can suggest is working in restuarants as a server, somewhere with tips. I bartend and serve, and my tips keep my expenses down and the hours aren't THAT harsh, if you find the right restaurant you can do 4-5 hour shifts and be off by 10-11, still time for hw. Working about 16 hrs a week over 4 days I can average $300+ in tips plus wage a week, about $1600 a month. Just don't get sucked too hard into the restaurant bar scene like I have been or you can kiss your tips goodbye!!

I think it will be ok there are SO many bursuries for financial help and scholarships for academic awards and sometimes the scholarships don't have academic requirements you can write an essay about your culture what its like to live in a house with a single parent if your part of a church or one of your parents work in a union if you're wondering, I don't work I'm taking a year off to get some money together and then I'm off to school I COMPLETELY know how you feel by all your friends having jobs, and you're the only one not working don't worry about it too much things always work out in the end good luck!
