Hey, I was wondering, does anyone here just volunteer in order to get scholarships or get into a certain program, or to fulfil some other requirement? Would you still volunteer once you've gotten into your program, gotten your scholarship, or fulfilled the requirements? Just curious...

Some people do volunteer just to get into a certain program/school or to get scholarships, but a lot of people volunteer just because they want to do good, because they like it, to help others.
Plus, it's fun.
I volunteer at a hospital, and am applying to be a volunteer at a second one. smile

i volunteer at a senior home, and it is an awesome experience!! at first i was doing it for coop, but then i dropped it since i don't need the credit. i'm still volunteering there though, and i'll probably continue volunteering there. i love being around people, and it's really nice to know that i made a difference in their lives just by being there for them, and doing the little things that helps brighten their day.

Definitely! Plan on developing Student Reach and since a couple other volunteer projects are ending, a couple new ones are definitely starting! Heading to Africa for the summer and becoming a Big Brother when I return!

Honestly, what advice do you want to hear? It depends on your interviewer. When I was interviewed as a potential hospital volunteer I got your traditional elderly volunteer; an well-off retired homemaker filling her days by sewing quilts over tea to sell in the hospital store. Essentially, I declared my love of "community" and the enduring power of human compassion and the position was mine! Mind you don't BS too much, though. Again, gauge your interviewer before opening your mouth.

Pourquoi?

smart casual.

once you're asked for an interview though I think you are pretty set to get it...unless you downright say you're gonna go crazy and start rampaging on the patients or something :S

you might not need the tie but the dress shirt and pants sound good. my sister got a position at the hospital back when she was in grade eleven and she went in dressed pretty casually (i think maybe dress pants or something) and she got the job. just don't look like a total slob (and don't overdo it either) and maybe take out some piercings if you can and you should be fine. ( i only point out the last part because that's something i've heard consistently for pretty much any interview)

Probably not necessary, but handy to have.

Bring a copy of your resume perhaps, and a rough idea of what your availabilities would be like. (weekdays/weekends; afternoon/evenings, etc)

Getting into first year isn't the end of all those requirements! Most scholarships, bursaries, etc. require volunteering. Almost all "further education" needs it. For some, like med school, it's not actually mandatory, but good luck without it; for others, like physio, it's mandatory. Even grad schools want it, in the form of research in a lab. Finally, some undergrad programs themselves require it for you to graduate! If you're only doing it for a requirement (*bites tongue and holds back nasty opinions*), be sure to look into all that. If you still want to volunteer, it's practically impossible to NOT find something that fits your interests and skills!

Tips for interviews at a hospital volunteer.
1. Arrive for the interview early
2. Dress appropriately
3. Remember to be yourself, know your strengths and be honest with the interviewer. Practice and preparation are the keys to interviewing successfully. Do all you can to be an confident and prepared as possible.
