I think the main reason that tuition hasn't been lowered is that they think we have enough means to provide for it. Those who can afford it, get it. Those who can't, get scholarships, bursaries, and loans. Maybe they think that if we cared about the cost, we'd go to a local university? Unfortunately, there aren't enough scholarships or bursaries to cover the tuition for all of those who can't afford it.

I agree. Schooling is stressful enough without having to worry about paying for that schooling. Each situation is different, but I'd say that for the average student working part-time is feasible but won't provide enough to actually support you. If there was a way for the average person to be able to pay for school themselves without loans and credit cards I'm sure it would have been done by now.

School is cheap in Canada compared to the US. I don't know what everybody is complaining about. It only costs about $5000/year to go to school (tuition/books). If you can't afford it, get a loan. You'll almost assuredly recoup the money you borrow in a couple of years from the increased salary you'll get from a university degree.

Also, what do you expect universities to do? They can't just magically reduce tuition. SOMEBODY has to pay for it.

I think, as students, all of you are only looking at it from your own perspective. Someone mentioned how tuition as become higher will minimum wage hasn't. Since we are still young, you have not seen the transition, but it is in fact true that both have become higher in the past few decades, the minimum wage having a higher increase then the tuitions. Therefore, we are actually paying less, in terms of how muhc we get paid, for our tuitions then people of say, 10+ years ago.

Yes, tuition is high. Yes, it is impossible for a student to get money like that just from working a part time job. But I really think we have little to complain about. We are given lots of opportunities to gain money from these universities, colleges, high schools, government, organizations, companies, etc. Most of these require no pay back, or loans that require a very generous extention for interest to begin accumulating.

You have to think that you are really paying what you get for. If schools were cheap, than they would be overpopulated with a mass amount of incompetent students, who don't even want to be there. With a somewhat high tuition, a student shows that he/she WANTS to be there and is willing to dedicate him/herself. It gives smaller classes and more students to be focused on what they want to do. Not to mention, that money goes back into your very own school, whether it be to esthetics, equipment, teachers, whatever. High tuitions are, in a way, beneficial to the student. In a way, they are also a filtering system to ensure that only the brightest and most ambitious students on there. It is "higher education", not free education.

-Enroll in co-op or get some meaningful summer internships
-TA during study terms
-Do NOT live on campus
-Share a room if you must
-Learn to cook/bring stuff from home if possible
-Take full advantage of the services that your school offers (you paid for it)
-Set up a budget and don't even think of getting a credit card unless you know how to manage your money
-It's very important to study what you're interested in, but don't go into something that's not in high demand (cough certain arts majors cough) without a contingency plan

I totally agree that the cost of post secondary education is unreal and unfair. I had my heart set on going to one university, but when it came right down to it, I just couldn't afford it and had to pass up the acceptance. Even with scholarships and student loans, I'd come out after four years wih way too much debt that I'd be paying off until I was dead. Everyone keeps telling us that we need some sort of post secondary education in order to have a good future, but then why do they have to make it so difficult to acheive that by having the cost of tuituion so high? It's totally contradictary. Did you know that in Spain university is free? Now that's the way we should go if we want to guarntee that everyone gets the education they want and deserve.

Oh, and want to know what really ticks me off? When they make you pay to APPLY! I mean, no guarntees that you'll get in, but they want you to shell out up to 75$! Talk about highway robbery!

So if students don't pay for university, who does?

I am applying for school and have realized nobody in my family qualifies to cosign a loan to help pay for my $40,000 in tution. What on earth am I supposed to do?!?!? Even with government student loans, this is insane. Im only going for a year and a half! Unreal.

Hey, I had this convo yesterday with a bunch of people, and an interesting point was brought up: "why should you be cheap with your education?! Out of all things to be frugal about, it shouldn't be your education". What do you all think?
It is definitely not cheap, and hopefully the government can support the post-secondary students as well.

You really have to remember too that post secondary education is a "higher" education. It is a privelege, not a right, and therefore if it was free, there would be nothing special about it because everyone would be freeloaders.
