O.K, so here's my dilemma:
I bought a gorgeous dress for prom; skirt is mid-thigh, with three ruched layers which makes it flip outwards, bodice is a 12-panel corset with boning, material is shimmery ruched taffeta, Colour is shimmery mango-orange/gold/redish orange. Sounds intense I know, but I love it.
I originally wanted to wear a nice gold stiletto with it, but quite a few of my friends think I should go with lime-green stilettos with a chunky green necklace and make a "statement". In all honesty, I'm not too keen on the whole prom thing, and want to be able to wear my shoes with another outfit. As well, everyone know that shoes stay on for the shortest amount of time possible, so does it really matter what colour shoes I have anyway?

Definitely go with the gold. You don't wanna look back on your pictures and look crazy. Your outfit should be classy and well put together.

Since prom costs a fortune its best to get shoes you'll get more wear out of. Green shoes are hard to match whereas gold goes with a lot.

this is weird. i definitely thought i posted this message about an hour ago but it didn't show up. hmm?

anyways, what i had originally written was that it's funny because i'm in pretty much the reverse situation as you. i have some really nice gold shoes (a gift) that i have that i was thinking of wearing to prom, but no dress to match. the funny part is that i'm looking for a green dress actually so those green shoes (though greeny-blue as opposed to lime green would work best for me) would go with my outfit and my gold shoes would go with yours lol

sneakyhobbit, I'm pretty sure I tried on the dress you're talking about! It didn't really look to good on me though, maybe it will suit redrose27. Was it strapless and more of a pinky champagne then a peachy champagne? Edit: now that I think about it, gold shoes wouldn't really suit that dress though...
In any case, redrose27: you were looking for a green dress, maybe try Laura? I know I saw alot of nice dresses in Toronto, but that would probabley be far for you. And lol, we should definately trade shoes!wink

I think I'd probably have to try Laura Petites (and still need tailoring though!) I've always got difficulty with finding clothes, and i'll admit that i'm picky....I'm a petite (around 5 2) and reasonably thin and small waisted but the clothes that fit me length wise usually are uncomfortably small in the bust area (or end up like a maternity shirt if they accommodate that size). I'm also a bit of a prude in that I really don't like clothes that show off a lot of skin (and have a general fear of strapless dresses lol). I'm looking for something with wider straps that doesn't show off too much back or chest and is around knee length (maybe a little bit higher, but not very short). I think any dress I buy will need to be expanded or tucked in or hemmed at some parts. If i find a dress that fits all my dimensions perfectly, then I'll buy it on the spot lol since that never happens to me and if it does, then it must be a miracle!

and the shoe trade sounds like a good idea smile

on another note, how good (or bad) of an idea is it to get stilletos? I function well (and almost exclusively) in heels normally---almost all of my shoes have heels at least two inches tall and I have no problem walking in them if they're thicker heels. Thin heels (especially very tall ones) i'm wary of since I've almost always snapped them off if I've worn them to something like a dance, or even just wearing them regularly. Would it be better to go with the better looking tall stilettos that will look good in pictures (and will give the illusion of me looking 5 5!), or smaller heels (that will make me look maybe 5 3) that are less fabulous looking but that I can actually function in?

Hmmm, in response to your question, I have a bias for stilettos so I'd suggest getting a pair especially if you're concerned about height. Personally, I've never had any really bad experiences with stilettos, I have a black strappy pair which I danced in for 4 hours and they didn't break on me or kill my feet too much (the operative word being of course "too") Honestly though, do what feels right. I'm a dancer so I'm used to killing my feet ( pointe shoes anyone?) but other people would rather go for something more comfortable so they can enjoy the evening more. You could even consider wearing stilettos for the beginning and photos then switching to a pair of flats or plain high heels. ( though of course this would be more pricey).

On a seperate note: haha! you're almost the complete opposite of me in terms of sizes. I'm about 5'6+1/2, and usually the smallest size in the store. I actually have to get clothes taken in at the bust (yah, its sad) but other then that clothes usually fit me perfectly. I don't mind backless and mid-thigh hemlines on special occasions but you would NEVER see me in any type of revealing clothing on a day to day basis. As for low-cut, my rule is that you can't show off what you don't have!

BTW; I can totally see creepy guys checking out this thread

lol i know. they should just close it to any male profiles altogether.

I might actually consider the shoe switch believe it or not. the gold ones i have are not very high heeled (i think from memory it's like two and a half inches or maybe three) but they're the thin kind (which is what's uncomfortable for me). I like the look of the shoe itself (style, the front, etc.) so i might use those for photos and then get another more comfortable pair of shoes for the non-photo part

Haha, I'm kind of in the same shoe situation as the OP. My prom dress is this burgundy wine-colour. Here's a pic of it (trust me, looks WAY better in real life).

http://www.melanielyne.com/en/collection/index.spy?num=8

Anyways, when light is reflected on it, the material turns kind of a silver/reddish hue (very cool effect). I've had my heart set on having some gold heels for a while, but I'm thinking that silver will look better. Do you think silver or gold would work more?

I'm the exact opposite of both of you. I'm 5'9 and can't wear high-heeled shoes so I don't tower above anyone else. I'm mighty jealous of your shortness (or rather my TALLness)

so mickyvicky, I'd have to say silver shoes would be the better choice. From the pic, the colour of your dress appears to be a cool burgundy, therefore you're best off with a cool metal (silver) as opposed to a warm metal (gold). Plus, there are silver coloured fibres woven into it since it appears silvery at certain angles, so if you went with gold your outfit might clash.
