Alright, so I've heard lots of good things about both Western and Queen's in terms of student satisfaction and social life, which is great. My question is about the actual people that go to Queen's and UWO. I've heard that Queen's, while a great school, tends to attract a lot of snobs. Is this really true? Secondly, what I've been reading more and more about at Western is that it attracts a lot of the 'rich kids who like to party a lot'---the kind of people who are more interested in their next party than what they're studying. If i go to western i plan to go into scholar's electives and the general feeling i've been getting is that there isn't as much interaction between SE and non-SE students as there could be--that it's a bit of an isolationist thing and that within the SE kids you get a lot of super-studious types (some who neglect social lives outside of their SE circle of friends), and within the non-SE there is a huge population that really isn't the academic type. The feeling that i get from Laurier a lot is that it attracts a lot of the people i just generally can't stand in high school---the party type who wouldn't really care about school other than to get bare minimum marks and then a job type. I've got friends at laurier and they seem to echo a lot of these sentiments about their classmates (with the exception of DD students which i almost overwhelmingly hear have both great study habits and are involved in volunteering and social). Is Western like Laurier in that sense? From the people that i personally know that are going to western, they tend to be overwhelmingly the party type whereas the Queens people in my school are the more involved AND social type (student council, play sports but also do relay for life and get 80s and 90s, etc.).

You're worrying too much about all of these stereotypes. There is a huge range of people at every school. You'll have no trouble finding people that you like to hangout with. I can't comment much on Queen's or Western because I've only visited them a few times, but WLU has a huge range of people. There is every one of the stereotypes you described and more.

If you're not into partying, you can request a quieter lifestyles floor. I lived there this year, and though I was nervous that it would be overwhelmingly antisocial, it was quite the opposite. It was like a normal floor, but just no parties. We still hung out and went out and stuff, but it was overwhelmingly science students concerned about marks. I loved every minute on that floor. I met people like me who weren't huge into drinking and we hit it off amazingly (I'm even living with people from my floor next year.) If you feel the urge to party, you can visit another floor.

I was worried that everyone would be rich/snobby/party fiends - I found many many that were more laid back and 'nerdy' if you will like me. It's a huge environment and you will always find people you click with if you look hard enough, as far as I can tell. As long as you're putting in an effort, that is (unlike my roommate last year.)

yeah I hear you redrose27, I have the same worries in the sense that the majority of the review (look in the archives of "Critique your University") says what you've been hearing, even my teacher says so (he attended there), that there are a lot of people who party all the time.

I'm guessing there are just more partiers in UWO than any other university? Keep in mind tho, that every Uni have their fair share of partiers and people who study hard, pardon the cliche but the Uni experince is what you make it to be, if you don't want to be partying all the time you don't have to, hang with people that share similar interest as you and opt for the quieter floors on rez.

So just rock out with me at western, redrose smile

Lol either way, it really depends who you hang out with. There are both types of people at every campus, some have more, some have less, but you're going to meet them regardless. Just comes down to who you meet and who you spend time with.

My brother went to Western and was in scholar's electives (he's graduating next month). Most of the people he hung out with were not in SE as far as I know, but they were mostly fairly academically focused (although of him and the three other guys he rented a townhouse with, he was the only one that doesn't drink).

My other brother is at Queen's and yes, there seem to be some snobs, but also some awesome people.

I only know two people who go to Laurier. One is a top student, and the other is into both studying and partying.

It seems to be mostly best to visit the campuses, take a tour, talk to a few students there, etc. I have visited all these universities, and Queen's and Laurier are among my top choices so far.

Hope this helps! smile
